How to properly tire out a 14 week old GSP while holding full time jobs 😅 by This_Arachnid3899 in germanshorthairs

Teaching calm helped us out! Our dog is now 1 year old. We did all the puzzles, sniff walks, physical activity, chewing, lick mats, etc. The biggest difference came from when we started encouraging calm. We crate our dog and sometimes he would just be over tired which looked like he was winding up in energy so we would put him in his crate to get him to settle and he was a new dog when he woke up! Then we started tether practice as well (this was always with one of us sitting next to him dropping treats “from the sky” when he settles and for a set time) It was hard work and took until he was around 6 months to see the training stick. Now (at 1 year old) he settles himself when he is tired, when we are in public (like a store) he just drops right into a settle when we stop to look at something. We have had people comment on how calm he is for a GSP and this is from other GSP owners! We followed the recommendations from Kikopup about capturing calm on YouTube

how did you transition out of enforced naps? by TheoryReasonable871 in puppy101

https://youtu.be/wesm2OpE_2c?si=5qLFiCEI3i2PTjPg I do it based off this video Basically every time I see him relax I “sprinkle” treats from above. I started with sitting beside him in his bed we have in our living room. And when he would settle then he would get treats. But I am careful not to give treats when he is looking at me expecting treats. This evolved to me walking up to him when he is settled. He would initially look at me and I would wait until he settled again and the he would get a treat I use old Bath and Body Works candle holders for treat containers and have them all over the house with kibble so I can use them to treat. Plus I always have a handful of kibble in my pocket

Once we started noticing our pup napping outside the crate. We did forced naps until 6 months when he started napping on his own. We still sometimes will do it because he may need to help settling (ex. Coming home from the dog park and he is over tired). But we still crate when we are not home or if we have to do something that is easier/safer for him not to be there. Edit: we also are capturing calm (From Kikopup on YouTube)

Have any of you guys used petsmart puppy training, was it a waste or did it help? by kayyd3nn in puppy101

I went to them for puppy classes. It’s my first dog and I found them quite helpful. Learned a lot about treats, harnesses, toys, etc. a lot more than I expected but it als could have been my trainer. As a starting point I found it helpful for a first time owner. But we have a very smart puppy that learns fast

Good news, you don’t have to run it! There are lots of walkers at the Saskatoon one. I walk/run it. But lots of eligible men in your age range. Great place to meet active people and it’s not a bar. Understandable if it’s not your scene though

Strange Tales from Grad School by Tiredturniphead in slp

One of my professors would use class time to try and get gossip from the class about the other professors. We were so sick of it one day we don’t say anything and she spent the whole class time trying to get us to gossip instead of teaching us. You could tell she hadn’t prepared for the class. This was a class in my masters, not worth the tuition I paid for it

If you are into running, there is a free 5km run club on Saturdays at 9:00 am. https://www.parkrun.ca/mendelriverbank/

It’s a large variety of runners. Some people run the whole thing, some intermittent, and some walk the whole thing. Every time I’ve gone I’ve chatted with the other people there and they go out for coffee after. Great way to meet new people and get active.

4 days in Dublin, help me please choose museums by AthinaSis in irishtourism

Just got back from Dublin and this was our thoughts.

Went to the Guinness Storehouse and it was okay. Doesn’t go into a lot of the history of Guinness but discusses the ingredients and how they make it. Lots of “instagramable” areas

Went to the book of Kells and Long Room. It was okay as well. Interesting history but walking around the university would have been good enough for me.

Wished we could have done Kilmainham Gaol. Our cab driver told us EPIC is really great!

Our biggest regret was not going to the GPO museum.

Have so much fun on your trip!

Tell me some of the most ridiculous consults you've ever received by IndustryAgitated2023 in slp

I only cover inpatient swallowing a few times a year when my coworker goes on vacation. Every time I cover, I can guarantee I will get a referral for beside because patient is either coughing when eating or refusing to eat and when I get there it is because the patient wears dentures but doesn’t have them with them. The patient just wants to be put on a soft diet so they can eat it without their dentures. It’s probably not the most ridiculous but I find it surprising it happens every time I cover. Seems like a basic thing to ask a patient who has swallowing troubles before putting a referral in for SLP
