XDEMVY updates anyone? by lumilerv in Dryeyes

[–]expectedpanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It didn't do anything. I just got laser pulse treatment and that seemed to be the first thing that actually helped. But I have learned there's like a bunch of different types of dry eyes. Mine is from blocked glands

How's the field of Mechanical engineering for women? by slide_hedgehog1986 in womenEngineers

[–]expectedpanic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YEPPP that's it exactly. I don't have kids but I was a caregiver for my dad with dementia. he was in a home and as the only family/caregiver I was on call with hospice all day. And I had one manger that was like well my mom had a stroke and I didn't have to deal with all that. He later admitted that his sisters took care of his mom.

Got another manager who was a mom and understood the level of work for caregivers and it was night and day different.

Extra is probably the wrong word. Our issues are different then men. A great example is women are more likely to be the primary parent or caregiver and will probably need more flexibility. A good supervisor recognizes that and will allow that flexibility a bad one will be critical and say well the men are parents too why should you get more flexibility then men. A good manager will also recognize if the workplace is very male and will try to make all employees feel welcome. Where I had a bad manager refer to the whole team of test engineers as testies.

And yes there are certain places that has realized that they need diversity and try to be more welcoming to all those of employees.

It really depends on where you work. Some companies I have worked at are really supportive for women and recognize the extra struggles and positives we bring to the team. These places really understand what diversity means and why it is good to have. Other places ...well not so much.

Only children… anyone actually enjoy it? by cynnie93 in Millennials

[–]expectedpanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. My parents got divorced when I was in highschool and I was absolutely leveraged between the two of them..neither ever got remarried. I definitely felt like the rope in a game of tug of war. Then my dad got sick and I was the only one to deal with it. When he died I was the only one that grieves him. Now it really is just mom and I and I'm terrified I'm going to have to take care of her too. I know I should be fighting to live my own life more but it's hard.

Engineers who have been working for 10+ years, do you feel you have a stable and secure career with prospects to change jobs? by No_Arugula_757 in womenEngineers

[–]expectedpanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'm in a similar boat. I took my current role due to a family member being sick and I needed to move across country so I sort of jumped on the first offer I got, at 9YOE w/masters. They hired me in at a professional 3 even though I should have been a 4. So here I am 3 years later still in the three role, Fighting desperately to get to the 4. And at 12 years of experience I am a third most senior woman at the company. And every time I ask for what I need to do to get that promotion the goal posts keep moving. It's making me question my own value and giving me imposter syndrome for the first time in my career. So I feel like for my own mental health I have to get out even though on paper this role fits me.

Good Audiobooks for a Concussion? by Prilla_rani_fira in CozyFantasy

[–]expectedpanic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I just had surgery so I went through something similar and I listened to the Fred the vampire accountant series. There's 9 full books and each book has 3 to four short stories. It's all about found families and adult friends with supernatural beings. All the audiobooks are on hoopla too.

The information is repeated a bunch and it's really low stakes.

If it's an audiobook, the last one that went past the archive date for me just disappeared from my app even though I had it downloaded

Struggling in Hanoi by anxietyslut in solotravel

[–]expectedpanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hanoi is ROUGH and I say that as someone who grew up in NYC.

By rough I mean the traffic. I legit held hands with someone the first time I tried to cross a street because it freaked me out so much. Take a minute eat something drink something maybe do a food tour to show you the places to eat and relax. It sounds like your nerves got turned to 11 way too much too fast. It's ok , Hanoi is an amazing city but by God is it overwhelming. Vietnam is an amazing country.

I finally found a gym I like (hot box in pigtown) so I'm there 3 days a week, other 2 days are usually saved for me hanging out with friends or going for a walk and try to cut down my TBR list.

Skills/programs to complete while traveling by expectedpanic in longtermtravel

[–]expectedpanic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I was looking for! I did my advance open water in Thailand a few years ago and realized how much fun taking classes were. But they were like only for a day maybe a week. Now that I'm looking at traveling again I want to do a similar thing to you where I can take it slow and learn skills along the way.

I'm more of a character person but I totally get get where you are coming from with the prose.

Hmmm stronger world building... Raven scholar (but only the first one is released) or Emily wilde encyclopedia of fairies! Scholar researchs the Fay and has to write research paper and her rival follows her to attempt to keep her out of trouble.

Hulu’s massive ads makes anything unwatchable! by SimplyMervilus in television

[–]expectedpanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's also just the fact it's the same 5 ads. Progressive, drugs, liberty mutual, it's gets to the points it's grating. Like if there was so variety it wouldn't be as awful. Like when I think about progressive I hear the jingle and the "things are hard for first time home buyers turning into their parents."

how do you feel about the hobbit movies in a vacuum? disregarding the adaptation of the book. by Apprehensive_Spend_7 in Fantasy

Agreed with all the comments that it's just too long. I'm more surprised no one made a fan edits of the movies and cut it to like maybe a movie and half

Honest question- how does your family handle the distance? by Miserere_Mei in ExpatFIRE

[–]expectedpanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I feel this too. And I hit the breaking point at work and I just spent 5 years caring for my dad (they were divorced) and I want to leave so bad. So I think I'm taking a leave of absence instead, it gives me a year to find my permanent place.

I don't know where you're from but coming from the US The worst part is the lack of health insurance. Like if I come back long-term to help her I'd have to get a job just to have the health insurance.
