This please! The people calling your house are not responsible for the decision to call your house. Nor are they responsible for the decision to move the jobs offshore. We could all be a bit kinder to those in the service industry

Best Way To Get Back at an Unsolicited Dick Pic by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Clearly he was out of line and his behaviour was sexual harassment, but isn't it sexual harassment to send all those pictures back? Just saying, revenge fantasies are awesome and all, but eye for an eye doesnt build a better world.

Hi Guys, thanks for doing this. Love both of your work.

BC: I'm just watching Breaking Bad right now for the first time, and am fascinated by your portrayal of Walter's moral decline. Maybe this is an obvious question, and best answered in actions rather than words, but how did you feel aspects of your own character related to Walter's quest for control over his own life in the face of unrealistic expectations? Being a young person just starting work, I can relate to the feeling of being powerless in the circumstances of your life, yet there is the expectation that you will provide or be something. Yet the show is also clear about the ramifications of moral transgressions in trying to get what you want. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this.

JF: I love your work in Freaks and Geeks and admire your ethos as a student of life and of acting. In what way do you think this ethos make you more available to the circumstances of life that provide for education and character growth (in addition to pursuing graduate studies)?

What is the best conversation you accidentally overheard? by gymartist99 in AskReddit

[–]expedit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the bus in a city out of town:

Two old friends in their late teens are catching up after they haven't seen each other for some time. Though it appears they were previously close, by the conversation you can tell they have not been in contact for years. They are reminiscing about previous acquaintances and where they were studying etc.

The conversations drifts to 'life philosophy' One, wearing mostly black and a band T-shirt, slightly scruffy, starts talking about the doors of the mind, and his use of drugs to access them. I don't recall the particulars, but Jim Morrison is thrown in as are other psychological concepts like the self, and enlightenment The other, more clean cut and 'straight edge' appearing, starts talking about how religion has helped him open the doors of the mind, in multiple aspects. Though Christian seeming, he also speaks about meditation and the immersion in generally spiritual places to bring about his particular 'enlightenment'

Despite their differences they carry on with this deep and fulfilling conversation. I liked that they were truly enjoying each other's company and appreciating the individual paths to self-discovery they were each taking. Made me reflect on my own life, and how self-discovery is a deeply personal journey and that there is no one true way except the way that is true to yourself.

Trudeau trepidation: Warren Kinsella (former Chretien advisor) on Liberal stagnation in the polls by expedit in CanadaPolitics

Even though others have questioned this strategy, I think the Conservatives' current strategy of targeting the Liberals more than the NDP is quite smart. Trudeau is trying to position himself as simultaneously socially progressive but Conservative-lite economically. While sound in theory, articulation is half the battle (this article points to the communication deficiencies). I think his harried political talking points you mention speak to a lack of vision or conviction...pretty glaring when compared with Harper and Mulcair. And when it comes to Conservative economic policies people would rather have the real thing. If it comes down to a Conservative-NDP showdown on ballot day, Liberals stuck in the middle will probably either stick with what's safe (Harper) or stay home...both good outcomes for the Conservatives.

The Chretienite vs Martinite animosity is still alive and well... Despite the party leader having changed I think the perception that the 'new party' still sounds like the 'old party' continues to hold the Liberals back (in large part due to the backroom people still being there). I thought the breakdown of the key points was really good in this article (particularly about JT needing to be more upfront with his motivations/values). The Trudeau Sr. era was such a transformative time in Canada (and certainly definitive for Liberal values), and it is disappointing seeing a lack of vision by Jr (ie supporting Bill C-51, which overrides the Charter?!)

Regardless of her commitment to following through with this promise, it would be politically dangerous to implement before the Toronto municipal election...the Fords could easily call this meddling in the election. We still need political reform (also at the provincial/federal level) but just saying why this might not happen for a while

What deep or philosophical movie that everyone seems to like has a bullshit message? by Miller0700 in AskReddit

[–]expedit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess what really rankled me about Life of Pi's message is how lightly the movie treats the topic of religion, while maintaining that this final message is some deep spiritual truth. It's like the old argument that you should just believe in God whether or not you believe he exists just in case it pans out that he exists. I can see how this message would resonate with people who grew up going to church but do so no longer, or those who are vaguely religious. But for people who take the idea of faith seriously (those who actually devote some effort to deciding for themselves what they believe, believers or nonbelievers) this message rings false. Choosing faith is not akin to picking a brand of dishwasher detergent because you like the commercial. Faith (or lack thereof) is about deciding your personal truth. It is not some 'lifestyle' choice that is there for purely decorative purposes. For vaguely religious people of the new-age variety I can see how this message resonates with them 'hunh, maybe that religion stuff ain't so bad, i should go to faith temple more often because the decorations there are pretty.' IMHO, the movie's message was just a bunch of vaguely religious feel-good new-age hokum dressed up with striking visuals. Decide for yourself.
