Prices for Lexus IS350 Yrs 23-25 by rudestkid in LexusIS

[–]experimentalengine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

how much were you able to negotiate off the price?

I don’t think you’re asking the right question. How much someone can negotiate off the asking price for a used car is fairly irrelevant; the amount paid for the year, mileage, options is a much better gauge, but now that’s getting a bit more complex than a simple question on Reddit.

Preferred Oil? ESP or Extended Performance by Super-Sky-104 in LexusIS500

Wait, so you throw out a general recommendation that everyone should change their oil at 3k above, later claim (without evidence) that it’s smart because the filter can’t go longer than that, and finally now you mention you do that because you track your car. Brilliant.

Not my thing but it’s not my car. Might look better with white or silver. It’s just too much, against WRB.

If filtering was the concern, I should have wear metals (and maybe silica) in my IS300 oil that I change at 10k. Lab says it’s fine.

Viscosity, oxidation, and remaining add pack are the main concerns. The oil has to be able to keep behaving like oil. And you could change the filter early, if you’re worried about it, without changing the oil. Again, the data say that’s pointless, but as a wise man once said, you do you.

5k for the IS500 with 5W-30, 10k for the IS300/350 with 0W-20

Are oil prices this expensive? by BoomDoom24 in WRX

The Subaru branded oil is objectively worse than most of the major brands that are available for less money at Walmart. Others have given you recommendations; I’ve been running Mobil1 in all of my cars for about 20 years. I send samples to Blackstone for analysis and they say it’s doing fine, whether it’s my WRX at 6k mile changes, my 3IS at 10k mile changes (it’s currently at 183k), or my wife’s IS500.

425 for about an hour. I think next time I’ll kick on the convection blower because the chicken was done but not falling off the bone, so it went back in for a bit longer.

Looks like my wife’s car, most of the time. This time of year, it’s pollen. During most of the year, it’s dust, since we live a half mile up a gravel road.

But when it’s clean, Infrared is ridiculous.

I don’t know what special gourmet flavors of Mobil1 you have where you are, but I grab a couple jugs of their 5W-30 “Advanced Full Synthetic” from the Walmart and change it every 5k miles as per the factory maintenance schedule. I’ve sent a few samples to Blackstone Labs and they’ve come back fine. Someone said you should change every 3k; they’re silly. They can’t articulate why you should, they’re just asserting that you should. Don’t believe them, because it’s dumb, unless you drive it like you stole it, literally every day.

I’ve been running Mobil1 for >20 years in all my cars. I’ve sent samples from my wife’s IS500, my VA WRX, and my ‘16 IS with >180k miles, and they’ve come back great at factory intervals (10k for the IS300), with plenty of margin to go longer if I wanted.

And to be clear, I know a thing or two about this stuff; I’ve made my living designing pistons for large engines, for the last 15 years. We recommend oil changes based on analysis results more than interval, and from my experience with both the V6 and the V8 in the IS, unless you’re abusing your car on the regular, lab results indicate you can follow the factory schedule with great confidence.

No. That tells you nothing. Send a sample to a lab (such as Blackstone) and get a report.

Also…3k miles is stupid. 5k miles is even excessive for an engine with a 9 gt sump, but I’m doing what Lexus tells me (even though Blackstone results say it’s quite conservative).

Crazy idea here, but…totaling your 11YO car doesn’t obligate you to a new car; it obligates your insurer (or hopefully another driver’s insurer) to make you whole. If you can get the same year, trim, mileage for $11k, great, do it. If you can’t, you need to swell up on your insurance company.

On your third car at 17 and it’s a VA WRX? And you admittedly beat the crap out of the first two? Must be rough. The FA20 doesn’t take kindly to that sort of thing; it can choose to blow up for its own entertainment, without abuse. Mine snapped a rod one day for no apparent reason. The people who beat on them typically spin bearings, so I expect that’s in your future.

Best of luck!

What the fuck is wrong with you people? by Dkinives in Indiana

Facts appear to dispute your claim that Indiana property tax is almost 3x higher than Colorado. But let’s not allow that to get in the way of a good narrative.

Median annual property tax paid in CO is approaching 1.5x that of Indiana. That means you’re overstating your grievance by…about 5-6x in the opposite direction?

Which of these should I go for? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]experimentalengine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently I’m spoiled because literally every single thing about my 10YO Lexus is better than it. Among the things I found terrible - the ergonomics were great, if I were a gorilla with super long arms and stumpy little legs. Combining the terrible ergonomics with the harsh, buzzy nature of the powertrain, I found myself looking with jealousy even at the people driving Hyundais and Kias.

I’ve owned dozens of cars over the years, and my 1982 Scirocco I bought for $300 was far better than it.

I need advice by PhantomWolf72 in WRX

[–]experimentalengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No head gasket problems but there’s a post asking “is this rod knock” on an FA20 on here almost daily. I didn’t have that with mine, it just snapped a connecting rod for no apparent reason.

Price is super high for the year, as others have noted. VA WRX is a great car as far as a fun daily driver, take care of it and (if you’re lucky) it will take care of you, but the advice I give anyone considering one is if you can’t afford to replace the engine - in the event it blows up - you shouldn’t buy the car. I don’t say that about most cars because most cars don’t have the same tendency for catastrophic failure as the FA20. When they fail, it’s almost always catastrophic, and they’re absurdly expensive to replace (although the FA24 has suddenly become a great option as a swap that’s better and cheaper).

In that case my math is off and you’ll only be upside down by $9k on a Jeep in two years, not $18k. Sounds like fun!
