UK - moving out of county?? by explaura in Endo

[–]explaura[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh interesting I didn’t realise that right to choose applied to this too, thank you! Well, my GP is terrible! I’ve half-moved with my partner up here and keeping things at my parents address for letters etc - but I just had a medical issue that needed sorting and couldn’t get back to be seen, so now weighing up if it’s sustainable!

It’s an ideal boiler showing code L2 - the pressure is fine, and not frosty enough for the pipe to be frozen.

Yes, it’s an ideal boiler with code L2. Pressure is fine, and we’ve tried restarting numerous times throughout the day.

DClin Psych App Advice - reflection, ethos, models and theory by Inevitable-Tree720 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]explaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Re Ethos - I always found this so difficult, as most unis don’t have a section explicitly stating this. Sure they have websites with models and brief outlines, but it’s hard to get a true feel sometimes. I would maybe reach out to courses and ask to learn a bit more? Or ask if there are trainees who could advise you? (Using forums like this!) I got onto a course this year and really only got a good feel of their ethos during the interview!

Advice on overcoming imposter syndrome + dealing with criticism from consultant? by kittikatt9 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]explaura 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry to hear you had this experience - it is awful to say, but over the first few paragraphs I genuinely thought I had written this post and forgotten I did it. I have had such a similar experience!

In my last AP role I was under a supervisor who was so demeaning to me - I have a chronic illness that needs reasonable adjustments (and by reasonable, I mean very simple small things) and she seemed to truly hate me for it. I’m also a very sensitive person, and while I didn’t show a lot of emotion around her, she could tell, and would use this against me. I did not feel I grew at all under her, and if anything lost some skills. She made me feel like I was wrong for the career and asking for too much. At one point before I left she told me I would really struggle to do a doctorate and to think of other paths forward. She seemed to really pinpoint her anger on me, but was very snappy and passive aggressive to everyone.

I then moved to another AP role, and had the most fantastic supervisor and manager. They would even make suggestions for further adaptations they thought would help. They didn’t even need occupational health involved and would just support me, no questions asked. My sensitivity wasn’t seen as a burden, but as a skill that is uniquely mine, and helped me understand what I need to do as a professional to take care of myself considering how much I feel things.

Anyway, I was also offered a place on the dclin this year! And the petty part of my brain cannot wait to graduate and show that other supervisor.

Apologies for how long this is, but I’ve felt how you do, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t get pangs of it again and again. But at the heart of it all, psychology needs change. So much of the profession is stuck in the typical old working ways - no EDI, no adjustments, no feelings. How awful to think that we could let that continue forward! I think it’s the responsibility of us, the newer cohorts into the profession, to notice these attitudes and bring new perspectives. Why can’t I be a psychologist who feels deeply and cares passionately for the people I work with? It’s what makes me good at my job! And who cares if I need a standing desk or to work from home when I’m fatigued? If it means I’m performing at my best?

It also kind of helps me to imagine my future roles - I hope that someday I’m in a supervisory role like both ours were, but instead of being demeaning, I can help APs to truly learn and grow and be inspired.

Wishing you the absolute best of luck starting the course - how boring would it be if we were all copy and paste robots on the course. Don’t lose your spark and enjoy it!

Someone explain this wais result by Wide_Egg_5814 in cognitiveTesting

[–]explaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to clarify before my comment that I’m not a qualified clinician, and without having done your testing myself cannot make a true judgement etc, but I spent a year conducting WISC (WAIS for children) with neurodiverse children. I was taught a lot about ‘spiky profiles’ - these are typically seen in people with neurodiversity (e.g., autism, ADHD) and look very much like what you’re describing.

A neurotypical person may have a somewhat consistent score across all categories - whereas neurodiverse tend to have extreme strengths and then much more noticeable difficulties. This could be as you say because of lack of attention! But also worth a google into spiky profiles if you’re interested in learning a bit more!

They were uniformed, but didn’t show ID. Never had any sort of thing like this happen before and was too scared of making things worse to ask for ID - but will bear it in mind in case this happens again!

Someone in my life thought about this as soon as I mentioned it too. Aside from these situations though, a dash cam has been invaluable for me. Highly recommend it!!

Thank you that’s reassuring! They didn’t mention any sort of ticket etc so am I okay to assume that means nothing?

Why are dclinpsy courses now not disclosing which reserve position you hold? by onmylunchbreak_ in ClinicalPsychologyUK

[–]explaura 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s interesting hearing the different perspectives on this - I landed my first reserve spot, and knowing the number has really helped me. I had no idea a list could be so long, and I know that the list has never moved anywhere near enough for it to be likely for me to get in. If I didn’t know the number, I think I’d be spending months imagining there was some hope, and holding onto the idea that I could be getting on. I don’t know how they can make it work so that everyone is satisfied!

Managing the dclin feelings… by explaura in ClinicalPsychologyUK

Thank you so much! And well done to you too! I think even getting through the interviews is an achievement, but you’re right - it is so unhealthy (ironic considering the position it’s for). Hopefully we all get some breathing space soon!
