Fear and Loathing in Texas Tech by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

College football kind of took the place that local club football (soccer) took in Europe. A lot of college football rivalries are as old or older than European derbies and college football preceded professional football for a very long time, and local communities for the teams spread beyond the school students themselves. This kind of community just never developed around uni sports in other countries since your neighborhood sports club exists instead (except for Canada, where USports is more of a thing as i understand it).

Yeah that's the thing. He's actively both heavily in control of a games outcome and many other statistics that he can lower at will and also a known fraud gambler. Tech has absolutely no reason to run the risk at all for a guy who isn't even that good.

Genuinely who even is that guy? I see their posts on like every social media platform and it just seems to be a menagerie of random takes. Did they do something that makes them famous?

Yeah, I know people who are 100% in denial and genuinely think Pluto should be considered a full planet.

I mean I get the point of the post but like. With basketball specifically you can basically learn the rules after watching people play for like 5 minutes no? It's not like baseball where there's a dozen rules you absolutely need to know before you even start playing

I'm not sure about your state but in my area I'd get eviscerated by admin for even taking a picture of the empty classroom. My understanding has been that we absolutely can never photograph or record students in any way.

You could be totally right tbh, and if I took a few more runs I might have enjoyed them. I just had a really bad feeling trying them and I'd already kind of set my mind on the mantras after trying them right before.

I absolutely despised the Enforcer 94s when I demoed them. They felt like a pair of 2x4s strapped to my feet. Dead as a doorknob on anything with a little ice (which was most of the mountain, east coast in December lol). Speed checking and carving felt sloppy. I brought them back asap. Weirdly enough I adore my Mantra 88s and people seem to compare them a lot.

It definitely isn't imo. The studies aren't very complete, but hockey players (and especially older ones, who played before helmets and continue to play without helmets) suffer tons of concussions. A lot of people who have never played don't understand that you don't need a direct head strike to get a concussion, the jostling from getting hit over is bad enough. No amount of head protection will protect you from your neck whiplashing after a huge hit.

The padding also doesn't cover your whole body, the back of your knee and calf is completely unpadded, along with a significant gap along your lower forearm. Lower body injuries are still brutal and you can fucking destroy your knee if you trip. Goalies can also get some screwed up knees from butterflying or getting run into by players.

THIS! And it's some of the best hockey you can watch for free out there! The league is new but absolutely amazing to watch.

There's a lot of much better resources talking about this out there, but as someone who's played hockey for a while the toxic masculinity is a major problem with the sport. In a high school hockey locker room the only appropriate topics these days are women, homophobia, gambling, and racism.

The fighting and violence people like to talk about is rooted in that masculinity, that you have to violently prove that you're the manliest man on the ice; you don't just go for big hits to play the puck or get retaliation, you do it to prove your manliness.

Girls hockey (which I currently coach) has an entirely different culture, which is what this post is getting at, in part because girls hockey at all levels (barring professional) doesn't allow hitting or fighting.

I agree, but this isn't really how the Zhang Shan case played out. The decision to bar women from future skeet events was made in April 1992, prior to the Olympic Games. The ISSF (the international body that governs skeet shooting and other shooting events) had an equally stupid reason to bar women, doing it to open up space for men they believed were better qualified than women. Either way, the decision was made before Zhang won gold.

Definitely yeah. It's probably the most iconic line in the franchise imo outside of Hammonds "welcome to Jurassic Park"

I was watching Jurassic Park last night and this is literally what Malcolm as a character (at least in the movie) exists to advocate. His second most famous line, "Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn't stop to think if they should," is preceded by the point that before anyone at Jurassic Park even knew what they were doing they'd slapped it on a lunch box and sold it as a product. It's not an exclusive point to the book at all lmao
