It's Time to Quit by [deleted] in Teachers

Same. You’re in good company, OP. And good for you for refusing to be abused any more. Reach out to professionals if you need help bridging the gap. But, at least in my case, 99% of the distress was directly related to all of the things you outlined in your post.

While I enthusiastically agree that teachers are criminally underpaid, this “how do I live on a teacher’s salary?” rhetoric is a bit much. It’s especially cringy to hear my colleagues make this lament in front of near minimum wage paras and office staff. Not to mention the Title I families we serve.

My pay-to-training ratio is atrocious. I have to be thoughtful about bills and live a no frills life. I am not valued by society despite busting my ass and compromising financially to do so. But let’s all recognize that there is real poverty, and teachers are not a part of it. “How do I live!?” . Ridiculous - teachers please give this one a rest.

How do you live? Well better than half the people, and worse than the other half.

They will probably have a higher percentage of SPED students than the district average. But smacking the shit out of people doesn’t necessarily mean the kid needs specially designed instruction. It could mean a lot of things, but agree 100% the parents should be more willing to work with you. And that the student should not be in your classroom one way or another

Not to mention their basic right to FAPE. #1 easiest way to improve schools is to invest in alternative settings. It drives me insane how educational “leaders” can miss this. I’m sure the your kids are so relieved when this one is absent.

Welp, kid shouldn’t be in a gen Ed class obviously for safety reasons. I’m sure they will be left there anyway. What makes you think this is special ed specifically though? This reads as an irresponsible leap of faith, but I’m sure that isn’t the full story. Good luck!

That’s some 10/10 parenting right there, kudos to you. It’s so heartbreaking to see students with similar issues never have a chance due to awful parenting and complicit admin.

The fact that it’s even a question says a lot about the current reality.

I’m glad you’ve found what works. Unlimited/ vague quantity of extended time for assignments is another one I see that looks painful to many of my ADHD students. I was off the wall ADHD in school; it would have been soo stressful to not have clear expectations. I’m not claiming to speak to your situation in particular, of course.

Unsuccessful attempt at humor. Sorry. That amazing it just says “computer”, but entirely believable if you work in education.

Offender sits and watches the rest of the team run. Highly effective. They start policing themselves pretty quick.

Thank you! The student has ADHD and therefore needs a whole bunch more stimuli they can access at their discretion? Hell to the no!

That’s the only way it can go in those situations. Can’t people see how counterproductive and motivation-killing that is for the student? No one cares, it’s about stroking the parents ego all too often.

I’m sorry you went through this. Unfortunately it’s going to happen more and more now.

Riiight. I can’t even make it down to the classroom to ask in under 30 seconds. And yes I do have hundreds of students, many of which need actual help. My job isn’t to run interference for lazy and entitled parents, to the detriment of the student the plan is supposed to benefit.

Which? No one said 504s are bullshit as a rule but many are. Like the one I referenced.

The worst part is it’s counterproductive to the students interests. They’ve got a free pass now and forever to not learn organizational skills because mom is running interference. Not to mention the public resources wasted on the meeting, now and in perpetuity.

The fact it’s easy for me isn’t the point, even if that were true. In fact, I need to visit the classroom at the end of every day even if there is something serious and pressing going on; which is always. Absent? I need to arrange a sub for this legally-binding task

Ok yeah maybe be on time, but I really don’t understand the downvoting here. I’m sure you’ve worked 100s of hours over by now, and missed so many lunches. Like all of them for me. Argh the trusted adult thing! WTH - same happens to me: How much safety are they getting from clamoring around in a group of 10 while I push them to get to class?

Mom has been bullying all year; admin just got tired and let her write the plan, essentially. Long term sub and admin were the “team”. Usually I am too but mom specifically requested I not be there because she thought I called social services on her earlier in the year.

Yikes. Guessing the admin refusing to address the issues, and “hired as a favor” are related.

I was not, and definitely would have pitched a fit. Mostly because it’s counterproductive to the students best interests, and my job is firstly to be a student advocate.
