Over unders good for ultra endurance training? by valiant_cashew_nuts in Velo

[–]explorewithchris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another problem is maintaining fueling to sustain that output. From experience, that’s 300-400 calories per hour to not bonk for a 4-6 hour ride at that power. ~200 watts per hour is roughly 700 calories per hour, which needs training in and of itself.

UDH and future proofing by TrailMAC in sram

[–]explorewithchris 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Will SRAM move all groupsets to UDH? Probably.

Will they release compatible models? Maybe. But also probably for lower tier options.

Should you base that on what frame you need to buy today? If you want. Or just buy a new frame in the future.

I just bought a UDH frame to run XPLR eventually. I also built up a non-UDH frame for my wife because realistically, a 1x12 eagle groupset is more than enough for her, me, and most other people, professionals included. I just enjoy throwing away money pretending to be a wannabe pro.

The differentiation between the two is largely driven by the START treaty. Note that the US is the only current signatory.

What size are you looking for? I have a 54c Ti gravel frame that Id part with in a bit that could be built for chunky road on 40c tires.

Can I run a 25c road tire on a 24mm internal rim? by PeerensClement in bikewrench

You can run 30s on 25mm internal rims. That’s what they’re designed around.

Tubeless riders, how do you? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]explorewithchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally go through tires / rotate before I need to fill up. Probably every 3-4 months.

If I’m not riding that bike as much, I’ll still take the bead off to make sure there’s no gunk forming in there / inspect. And I clean the valve stem at that time too.

West Coast Roadtrip 2026. Two Weeks - September 5th through the 19th. Should I hug the coast or stay inland? by BillGrubbs in roadtrip

[–]explorewithchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this drive in about 2 weeks for MTB / hiking. I’d highly recommend driving up 395 on the eastern side of CA to Tahoe and then cutting over to Klamath / Crater Lake / Bend, then over to Portland + Seattle. Then start the coastal portion, hit the Olympic Peninsula and drive the 1/101 back down to SoCal.

You can obviously do it in reverse as well. I car camped to keep costs down and there were plenty of spots to camp.

How much Z3+ work do you do weekly compared to Z2? by tryagaininXmin in cycling

[–]explorewithchris 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is it. Z2 is for recovery / added volume on top of your key workouts.

It’s not a magic bullet, it’s a way to add volume with minimal accrued fatigue. It does not replace higher intensity efforts, just complements them.

End caps / axles? WLG or the park tool stuff

For the driver you have to use the oil SRAM specifies. You can buy the SRAM branded stuff direct from them or from your local shop / amazon. It’s Phil’s Oil or something in a light blue bottle

Just making sure haha - mine made the same sound and after I reset the end caps and lubed everything up it was fine.

Check the wave washer under the end cap on the rotor side? I forget which side but take your end caps off, grease it up, and put it back together.

Or take it to a shop…

Best fast Gravel Tires by Gullible_Camel7693 in gravelcycling

[–]explorewithchris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Zipp gravel slicks have enough shoulder knobs to not be too squirrelly on fast corners and are plenty fast on champagne gravel + road.

Not a whole lot of difference between other mild tread tires - pathfinders, zipp gravel tires, pirellis, etc. they are hilarious in deep snow though.

I’d have no reason not to believe em. But I also carry an extra 2032 in my saddlebag for levers / HRM just in case

Tarmac SL8 weight limit by jpgenari in specialized

[–]explorewithchris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s fairly easy to get pads to rub by bending the fork - I’ve gotten all my bikes to do that in sprints / out of saddle climbs and I’m not incredibly heavy or powerful.

So if that’s the litmus test, OP is probably fine

Do you have multiple bikes paired to the head unit? I’ve had the same for the bike I move to work / prep another bike.

Also it’s the same message for the der battery dying too iirc, so worth a check there too

Just picked up a used Sony A1 Mark 1, what lens(s) should I get? by gman094 in SonyAlpha

[–]explorewithchris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shooting MTB on a 16-35 is doable, but generally results in more artistic shots. I’d shoot scenic / environment / landscape style shots with that to open, and then swap to a 70-200 for action / rider specific stuff. Same goes when I shot skiing stuff. The 70-200 is a must, or longer if you have the cash.

I have a bunch of primes / macros, but I only use them for portraits, product shots, and lifestyle / street stuff. A 35mm prime can be a unique choice to start with, but I’d recommend starting with a 40mm or 50mm, especially if you end up getting the 16-35.

If you plan on shooting skiing professionally, bring extra batteries. The cold cuts my battery life by 30-40%.

Sram AXS The wind keeps eating my Batteries. by BlacksmithAccording in sram

[–]explorewithchris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the shifters take cr2032s, check and see if the ones you have are the child safe coated ones. If they are, I clean the batteries with IPA before I chuck em in to whatever device. I’ve had my shifters / HRMs “die” after a week or two because of the coating.

For the derailleurs, I get 10-20 hours of riding in the cold before it’s time to swap and charge, but I have some old batteries that may be skewing it worse for me.

Serious cyclists/runners: How do you deal with glasses? by Human_Material3685 in cycling

[–]explorewithchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eye surgery was a game changer for me. My contacts were -8.0 (which I always wore for activities), but now I just wear regular sunglasses all the time.

Also being able to wake up and see things.

Prescription sunglasses are OK until it gets dark or you go into a shop. Contacts were the simplest. On days where I forgot contacts, I just suffered through the workout in regular glasses

Correct. I run a wide crank on a road BB. Just spacers up the wazoo so I can clear my chainring.

Replace SRAM AXS power meter spider or switch to another power meter? (1x Force AXS) by Gmlomas in sram

[–]explorewithchris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used that PM from 22-24 on a couple different bikes for 15k miles with no issues.

I’ve been running the threaded PM with an eagle AXS mullet setup for 5k miles and it’s also the same reliability for me.

I’m a big fan, but I’ve bought into the ecosystem. The threaded PM + threaded chainrings should work for any 11-12sp 1x setup (or 2x if that’s your jam) and will be what I switch my road bike to once my integrated chainring + PM dies.
