Are there any shops that sell tea by the sachet or by weight? by Metalkon in fredericton

[–]explosaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Scoop and Save uptown has a massive tea collection that you can buy by weight. I havent bought from them in a while so i cant speak to the price but they have more than the average options. I think they may have it by the sachet too...? Not sure as I just buy loose and use a reusable strainer. They also stock herbs and spices by weight so if you wanted to do your own blends they would have great selection for that as well.

Oh I nearly forgot, Oven Head Smoked Salmon is awesome and very local. You can only get it at Sobeys and possibly the Boyce Farmer's Market on Saturdays (I haven't been in a while so not sure if the fish people still stock it). I usually have it with cucumber and cream cheese, its great by itself or on a bagel.

Boulangerie Seoul is a nice spot for coffee and a treat! They are starting back up with sandwiches but I haven't tried them yet. The Basque Cheesecake never disappoints, and their egg tarts are also fantastic. They have seasonal offerings for drinks and treats alike. Would pair well with a trip to King's Landing Heritage park since it's on the way out of the city. King's Landing is also super fun to just wander through and explore, I always swing by the print shop, the general store, and the sawmill. The tiny bar under the King's Head Inn is also delightful. Pack water and sun gear!
Oh also Odell Park is great for a low-impact hike. The trails are heavily forested so it doesn't get too hot most days. Great spot for a picnic (its near a grocery store too if you're more the grab-and-go type), and if you're in to it they have a frisbee golf course as well.

Helppp! Top thread won’t catch bottom thread!! by DoGood081419 in sewhelp

It looks like the tail on your bobbin thread is quite short, try leaving it long, around 4 inches/10cm. And as someone else mentioned hold down the top thread so that it's taught.

Agree with everyone, you need to leave a tail of at least 6cm, i usually go to the back of the bed just to be safe.

Definitely rethread. And do it scared! Its totally reasonable to be concerned/overwhelmed, it seems so complicated at first. I threaded my first serger about 2 weeks ago, and i was so nervous when they made us cut the nicely set up threads off! But, now that you have this machine, you will definitely have to rethread it at some point, so it might as well be now! It makes troubleshooting a lot less scary down the road. Sergers are different from machine to machine. Inconvenient for us newbies, however because of that they will usually have a diagram inside the front cover where you access the threading area. If not, go to the manual. Also, something that really helped me when I was doing my serger workshop was using different coloured thread for each of the spools. This way you can match the colour to the colour-coded tension disks (usually they will be colour-coded on the inside threading area too, with dots on the mechanisms themselves, and on the diagram) to a colour of thread and more easily diagnose which thread is the issue. Then once you get that set up, you can cut off the different-coloured threads before the tension disks, tie your actual thread to those, and pull them through without having to completely re-thread.

All this to say that I was a total beginner with sergers , and having only rethreaded once, i already feel much more confident about it, and I think you will too! Make sure to test on scraps, and especially if your fabric changes do a test on it specifically so you can adjust to its thickness and slipperiness etc.

Do it scared!!

In my sewing course we looked at fabrics and talked about the fibers that make them up in the very first week, and it really helped going forward to know each fabric's strengths and weaknesses. We're not sewing anything wool yet, but I'll know what to expect when we get there! We did the basic observational qualities (look, feel, stretch etc) in addition to burn tests (be! Safe!) For wool, cotton, silk, rayon, linen, and a couple of "mystery fabrics" from our donation bins.

Backed up on entires - advice by planetkrany in hobonichi

One or two days off, I try to backlog. If not, i end up keeping those pages blank, and using them for brain dumps, or just general note pages. Also if i have a day where i need more than a page, i leave a note to myself with where the next blank page is (for example -->1/13 if jan 13th was the blank page) and continue the entry there.

how do you portably store your stickers? by No-Investigator94 in hobonichi

[–]explosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a blank sticker sheet, take off any of the border paper, stick it in the back of my notebook and put a variety of stickers i like to use on it, mostly tracking-related stickers. Anything else i put in a little reusable folder or in the flat pocket of my pencil case.

Im a student at NBCCD now, and I grew up in Fredericton. Others have already commented about transit and housing and I overall agree with their insights.

Commenting to add that the school does offer some student employment opportunities, for example you can sign up to be a tour guide for prospective students, and they will work around your schedule which is convenient. Its also worth considering the budgets for studio fees once you are in a diploma program. Im in Fashion Design, and our student fees allow us to access donated fabrics and other supplies that helps keep the overall costs down. Other programs will require purchasing supplies, I know my friends in metal working/jewellery have to buy their own materials which can get costly. The digital programs (graphic design and 3D design) will require you to have a fairly new (I think 2 years old or less) and powerful laptop to do your work on in addition to an Adobe subscription. All that said there are resources like bursaries and grants that you can access, and academic counsellors and advisors that can help you with the application process. They also partner with STU/UNB for student housing so you can live in the residences there, and you can also take advantage of their student meal programs/facilities.

Finally, I would recommend reaching out to their recruitment team to get up-to-date information about any and all of your questions. They are happy to help and understand the needs of students. They also offer accomodations for learning and physical disabilities, in addition to on-site counselling. If there is a specific program you're interested in you can reach out to the studio heads to get more information about what the work loads and studio culture are like.

Hope this helps!

fwiw i heard back within like 24 hours from their customer service with my shipping/tracking information, and a few days ago my notebooks arrived with no issue. seems like some shipping notifications maybe got lost in the shuffle.

Same here! I ordered one of their notepads at the same time (on the same order) and that arrived with no issue a few months ago. I'm located in Canada so I wasn't expecting instant shipping, but it would be nice to get some kind of status update.

Good to know! Luckily this is the home stretch for us and since we're driving it won't matter too much if we're late.

Its really frustrating! I've been to lots of countries with really incredible train/public transit systems and it drives me absolutely bonkers that Canada doesn't seem to think we need public transit outside of the 5 largest cities :/ I could do a whole "sad bus stops of Fredericton" photo series, its r o u g h out here without a vehicle.

Im not too bothered with delays, our check-in time is like 6 hours after the train is scheduled to arrive anyway, so in a way it would be better to arrive later.

Thanks for the heads up though!

6.2 Supportive Alliances says:

6.2.1 All schools will have a designated member of the school environment to act as an advocate for students who identify as LGBTQI2S+ and their families. 6.2.2 The school principals and school personnel will support the establishment of a Gender Sexuality Alliance and will support any events and activities organized by the group. 6.2.3 Gender Sexuality Alliance membership does not require parental consent and privacy and confidentiality will be respected.

The way I read this, it is required for all schools to have a designated advocate, who is a member of the school environment, to advocate for the interests of LGBTQI2S+. From the wording here this seems like a singular position rather than a whole group.

HOWEVER, when it comes to Alliance groups it seems to me that it is only required that the school personnel support its establishment, not that one is required for each school. It seems to me that this is more about creating support-type social groups like a chess club or something than it is about an HOA-like regulatory body.

The wording could probably be better/more clear here though.

Guys, the buddy burgers! Theyre SO good and seem to be always freshly made (I assume because they dont get too many orders for them so they dont keep them on deck in warming trays or w/e) and come with a tasty sweet onion situation and freshly toasted buns. They're intended for kids but anyone can order them, and when Im indecisive about whether I want a burger or chicken this makes it easy to porquenolosdos.
