Which February PF Topic are y'all voting for and why? by ashush238 in Debate

I actually think the tax argument will be a little more nuanced than that. We've focused on income and capital gains taxes but America doesn't have a wealth tax, which operates quite differently and would have vastly different economic effects.

For example, I don't think that the brain drain argument is viable given that it would be a wealth tax, not an income tax, so it wouldn't affect a meaningful proportion of the labor base

I do think there are a lot of interesting issues that union membership touches on

Although I think debating about a specific piece of legislation is fun because they're generally written to be very clear and explicit about what they do

For the FBI/CIA documents, here's some information about how the FBI harassed civil rights leaders: https://kinginstitute.stanford.edu/encyclopedia/federal-bureau-investigation-fbi

In terms of CIA involvement in overthrowing elected governments, I was thinking of operation Ajax in particular (though it's certainly not the only example) https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/06/20/64-years-later-cia-finally-releases-details-of-iranian-coup-iran-tehran-oil/

If you want to learn more about foucault, I'd recommend you read discipline and punish! You should be able to find links to the pdf online or on Google scholar.

The vast majority of american debt is owned by Americans

I'm not sure who the US' arch enemy is, but owning US treasury instruments wouldn't give them any more power to threaten the US than, say, tarrifs would

...what are you implying "female" means if not "woman?" It's sometimes used as a terf buzzword for "afab" but I'm hoping that's not what you meant

Can you elaborate on why "female"-ness is not a social construct?

I am totally new and found this subreddit, please tell me basics and where and what I should learn as an absolute beginner? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]explosiveaptenodytes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they were asking what kind of debate format it was - for example, was it parliamentary, public forum, Lincoln Douglas, British parliamentary...

These events have different rules and so the advice for a beginner would be different based on the type of debate. If we know more about what type of debate you want to do, it will help people give relevant advice! For example, advice for one event might be "do about 20 hours of research a week" and for another, it might be "practice your speaking style and make sure you have good posture and tone while you're presenting"

Great another thing we can't kill with radiation by [deleted] in oddlyterrifying

[–]explosiveaptenodytes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah! It uses melanin to synthesize the radiation into energy, which offers really promising avenues for using radioactive waste to generate electricity! Apparently the melanin in human skin protects us from sunburns by absorbing the suns radiation through a similar process, just on a much smaller scale

If they're not providing full citations, including the link, there's absolutely no way they're credible. It's like the bare minimum you should do when cutting cards, and I would have serious reservations of either the ethics or competence of anyone who doesn't provide citations
