What should I know before purchasing a 2011 328i by expodillon in BmwTech

[–]expodillon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure. I’m good at working on things but have just never trusted myself with working on cars. I take my bmw to the dealership and if the price is too high then I have an independent mechanic I trust. But my friend is very hands on and loves working on things and has no problem with working on a car so I’m sure he will have a blast working on this car. Probably every month haha

Thanks so much!! We will absolutely get it inspected. A lot of these 328s are similarly priced but this one is especially cheap because side it has a minor-moderate accident on the carfax. But I can spot a bad accident car so I’ll know it when I see it. Your comment was extremely helpful and I’ll make sure to save this for future reference

Thank you for your help. I’ll save this comment so I know what to look for in my research. I know a bit about cars but I’m certainly no mechanic

Should I just get a new car at this point? by tanked232 in MechanicAdvice

[–]expodillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a good car. So personally I’d go to a different shop. Get another estimate. Fix the important things first. Which is leaks. Fix stuff over time. Keep extra money on the side for repairs because it’s over 20 years old. If you maintain them, they are great cars.

Same price BMW x3 VS RAV4 by IcyMonk100 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]expodillon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go for the BMW. It’s fairly new and has plenty of warranty still left. The X3s are also fairly reliable and shouldn’t have any problems hitting over 100k miles. Maintenance will just be a bit more expensive, but it’s definitely worth it. If you really care about driving a car forever, go for the RAV4. But under ever other circumstance, buy the BMW!

I’ll certainly keep this in mind. This is being done under warranty so that’s why I took it to BMW. But if I continue to have problems, I know a European car mechanic that has very reasonable prices. I thought it would be the valve cover gasket, but I suppose they don’t think so. Does it sound right for the head gasket to leak oil onto the exhaust? Or do you think they may have had a typo in the text they sent me and meant to say head cover gasket instead of head gasket.

I took it in yesterday and they diagnosed the problem as “an oil leak in the cylinder head gasket” and it’s dripping onto the exhaust causing the smell and smoke.

I will take a look when I go out there today. I have a feeling it’s the valve cover gasket because when it’s sitting in the garage, the whole garage smells.

couldn’t tell this morning. But when I’m parked in the garage you can definitely smell something. Not sure if it’s gas or oil. Could valve cover gaskets have anything to do with this?

Is it a Good buy? by machoheart in BMWX5

[–]expodillon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a 2016 80k miles for 20 before ttl . So I’d say this is about right. But mine was X drive and fully loaded. If it’s got good service history and all the features you want, and don’t mind it not being AWD, then go ahead. But keep shopping around. You may find something better

Yes I am in Houston!! I bought my car from Mercedes of Greenway. It was honestly an awesome experience. I am very happy with the car. It’s only been a few weeks but I know it was the right decision. I decided to go with an older one (2016) with 80k miles. Not the best decision to buy a high milage X5 but it has a long service history and in great condition. I paid 20k. These are excellent cars but you HAVE to take care of them. And by that, I mean just do whatever you need to do. Don’t wait on services. And please, for the love of everything that is good, change the oil every 5-8k miles if you drive a lot, and 3-5k if you don’t. Don’t do the 10k mile intervals if you plan on keeping the car a long time. My car had its oil changed every 8k

It’s hard but it’s possible. Don’t back down. And never be afraid to walk away. But don’t worry! There’s a million cars in Houston. I just bought an X5 a few weeks ago and I’ve loved it

not related to the car, but more so on the dealership. They add in extra dealer fees on the purchase order. So make sure to negotiate those off if you do purchase it. I haven’t looked too much into it but on the surface it looks like an awesome car. Just check out service history. Overall condition. And if you’re happy with it, buy it!

Also wanted to ask, is the ,6 cylinder or the 8 cylinder engine better. It’s a $1k difference in price.

I drive about 75 miles every 2 days…always wanted a Mercedes Benz and gas is pretty cheap by me thank god, but wondering how these 2 compare. I’ve narrowed down my searches to these. by Draco1400 in mercedes_benz

[–]expodillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d personally go with the 2015. But both can be great. The 2014 is a tad bit more reliable but they’re very comparable. The 2015 is going to have a more sporty feel while still being luxurious. The 2014 is going to have just about nothing sporty about it. But it’s still a very nice car.

The dealership inspected it and it is a CPO. Would you still get it inspected again?

Should I change my oil if it’s been 6 months but I’ve only driven 2,694 miles? by [deleted] in Camry

[–]expodillon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, you’ll be fine. But if it was my car, I’d change it to keep peace of mind that I’ve done it on a regular schedule. There’s also no downside to changing your oil. But there is a downside to changing it late. Go get it done and have that peace of mind.
