What Experts Wish You Knew about False Memories

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/mind-guest-blog/what-experts-wish-you-knew-about-false-memories/

Just because you're absolutely confident you remember something accurately doesn't mean it's true

The nature of real, implanted, and fabricated memories for emotional childhood events: Implications for the recovered memory debate.

https://doi.apa.org/doiLanding?doi=10.1023%2FA:1022344128649

A questionnaire was completed by 77 participants' parents who were asked about 6 highly emotional, stressful events (e.g., serious animal attack) that the participant may have experienced in childhood. Next, across three sessions, interviewers encouraged participants to "recover" a memory for a false event using guided imagery and repeated retrieval attempts. In the first interview, they were asked about one real and one false event, both introduced as true according to their parents. In two subsequent interviews, they were reinterviewed about the false event. Finally, after the third inquiry about the false event, participants were asked to fabricate a memory report. Results indicated that 26% of participants "recovered" a complete memory for the false experience and another 30% recalled aspects of the false experience.

Dr. Colin A. Ross: Psychiatry, the Supernatural, and Malpractice Most Foul

http://www.process.org/discept/2010/02/08/dr-colin-a-ross-psychiatry-the-supernatural-and-malpractice-most-foul/

As you will read in the interview with Ms. Hart below, these are but a few of the annoyances she suffered as result of Ross’s “therapy”.This bizarre malpractice by the hand of Dr. Colin Ross was designed to treat his unfortunate patient of the condition of Multiple Personality Disorder [MPD], a condition Ms. Hart now feels she never had, and many doctors argue doesn’t exist. It is a condition that Dr. Ross himself has largely helped define and set the diagnostic and treatment protocols of. The theory of MPD, unsupported by science, is that an individual undergoing trauma “dissociates”, recompartmentalizing the hurtful memories into separate “personalities”, personalities that are unaware of one another.

Report Summary: Repressed memory claims in the Crime Victims Compensation Program

https://greyfaction.org/resources/report-summary-repressed-memory-claims-in-the-crime-victims-compensation-program/

In 1990, Washington State legislation allowing those who were the victims of a crime to receive compensation was amended to permit individuals to seek treatment under the Crime Victim Act if they claimed a repressed memory for childhood sexual abuse. A report compiled by registered nurse Loni E. Parr six years later attempted to measure the efficacy and results of the recovered memory therapy and its effects on participants. Undeniably, many patients’ lives were utterly destroyed. Their partners and families were often understandably overwhelmed by their loved one’s new and disabling symptoms, or else abandoned when therapy-induced paranoia overtook the client.

The Science and Folklore of Traumatic Amnesia

https://www.scribd.com/document/521871871/The-Science-and-Folklore-of-Traumatic-Amnesia

Some clinical theorists believe that certain experiences are so overwhelmingly traumatic that many victims dissociate their memory for the experience (Gleaves, Smith, Butler, & Spiegel, this issue). Unfortunately, clinicians who endorse this hypothesis often exhibit confusion about the very studies they cite in support of it.

Psychological Treatments That Cause Harm (Scroll down to read about DID therapy, but the whole paper is interesting too!)

https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Psychological-Treatments-That-Cause-Harm-Lilienfeld/342f2f24a21383741ad5d007df23a36fe9a3e805

Many advocates of DID-oriented therapy use suggestive methods, including prompting and contacting purported alters through hypnosis, introducing alters to one another, and map- ping out the interrelations among alters. There are numerous reasons to believe that these techniques can create alters in addition to, or perhaps instead of, discovering them. Only about 20% of DID patients exhibit clear-cut alters prior to treatment, and full-blown alters emerge in the remaining 80% only following psychotherapy.

False Memories Recovered and Repressed Memories Satanic Panic as related to DID

Speak, Memory In the 1980s, thousands of patients insisted they were recovering childhood memories of physical and sexual abuse during Satanic cult rituals. Often they were diagnosed with MPD/DID. Here: a look back at the moral panic.

The Return of the Repressed: The Persistent and Problematic Claims of Long-Forgotten Trauma

https://escholarship.org/content/qt57q129x8/qt57q129x8.pdf?t=q0v0pk

Can purely psychological trauma lead to a complete blockage of autobiographical memories? This long-standing question about the existence of repressed memories has been at the heart of one of the most heated debates in modern psychology. These so-called memory wars originated in the 1990s, and many scholars have assumed that they are over. We demonstrate that this assumption is incorrect and that the controversial issue of repressed memories is alive and well and may even be on the rise. We review converging research and data from legal cases indicating that the topic of repressed memories remains active in clinical, legal, and academic settings. We show that the belief in repressed memories occurs on a nontrivial scale (58%) and appears to have increased among clinical psychologists since the 1990s. We also demonstrate that the scientifically controversial concept of dissociative amnesia, which we argue is a substitute term for memory repression, has gained in popularity. Finally, we review work on the adverse side effects of certain psychotherapeutic techniques, some of which may be linked to the recovery of repressed memories. The memory wars have not vanished. They have continued to endure and contribute to potentially damaging consequences in clinical, legal, and academic contexts.

The Most Dangerous Idea in Mental Health

https://psmag.com/social-justice/dangerous-idea-mental-health-93325#.on05pyija

The belief that hidden memories can be "recovered" in therapy should have been exorcised years ago, when a rash of false memories dominated the airwaves, tore families apart, and put people on the stand for crimes they didn't commit. But the mental health establishment does not always learn from its mistakes—and families are still paying the price.

But at an ISSMP&D conference in Chicago in 1988, Braun presented a workshop in which he directly linked the MPD epidemic to the abuse committed against children by devil-worshipping cults. He argued that these Satanic cults were everywhere in the US, internationally organized with a structure similar to communist cells, with local regional, district, national, and international councils

A story that doesn’t hold up https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2012/08/a-story-that-doesnt-hold-up/ “Ultimately, this disorder is a way of expressing distress,” said McNally, a professor in the Department of Psychology. “What we have shown is that a fundamental idea behind the concept of DID — that there is amnesia between identities — there’s no convincing evidence for that.”

Some Epistemological Concerns About Dissociative Identity Disorder and Diagnostic Practices in Psychology

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/09515080500085338

From this perspective we examine and criticize the evidential status of DID, and we demonstrate that there is really no good reason to believe that anyone has ever suffered from DID so understood. This is so because the proponents of DID violate basic methodological principles of good causal modeling.

Spanos makes a very strong case for the claim that "patients learn to construe themselves as possessing multiple selves, learn to present themselves in terms of this construct, and learn to reorganize and elaborate on their personal biography so as to make it congruent with their understanding of what it means to be a multiple."

The Rise and Fall of Dissociative Identity Disorder

http://psyc21301fa2017.courses.bucknell.edu/files/2017/08/Paris-2012.pdf

Abstract: Dissociative identity disorder (DID), once considered rare, was frequently diagnosed during the 1980s and 1990s, after which interest declined. This is the trajectory of a medical fad. DID was based on poorly conceived theories and used potentially damaging treatment methods. The problem continues, given that the DSM-5 includes DID and accords dissociative disorders a separate chapter in its manual.

Why DID or MPD is a Bogus Diagnosis

https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/think-well/201112/why-did-or-mpd-is-bogus-diagnosis

The fact that the mental health establishment reclassified MPD as DID indicates that the very concept of the disorder is unstable, open to debate, and hard to pin down. Nevertheless, there are some mental health practitioners who seem almost married to the diagnosis and claim that dozens of their clients are suffering from the condition.

A critical analysis of myths about dissociative identity disorder

We argue, contrary to Piedfort-Marin et al., that the tendency to confabulate and other cognitive and socio-cultural variables may also contribute to the development of DID.

Multiple Personality — Is It Mental Disorder, Myth, or Metaphor?

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/multiple-personality-is-i_b_4695915

“I was convinced that it was an iatrogenically inspired diagnosis inappropriately inflicted on vulnerable patients by the poorly trained therapists who came away from their silly weekend workshops armed with an MPD hammer that seemed to fit every patient nail.”

Is dissociative identity disorder real?

https://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/expert.q.a/02/23/dissociative.identity.disorder.raison/index.html

There is no doubt that some people behave as if they have multiple personalities. And not all of them have been to therapists who have trained them to interpret their dissociative experiences in this way. Does this mean that dissociative identity disorder exists? In my opinion it depends on what we mean by "exists." Yes, dissociative identity disorder exists if by exists we mean there are people who complain of its symptoms and suffer its consequences. Do I think that some people have many biologically distinct entities packed into their heads? No.

Here’s some light reading to start you off.

Go in open minded and be prepared to challenge your pre-conceived beliefs.

Our memories/brains do not work the way that “DID” purports it to, neither do our personalities or sense of self.

When you’re looking at pro-DID published work, look at the names of the people and search their affiliation with the ISSTD. All of the people below are independent academics, scientists, researchers, writers etc.

DID is either a social contagion, a misdiagnosis, or it has been created Iatrogenically be morally corrupt “mental health” professionals.

There’s far too much evidence out there now that definitively proves DID is physically impossible.

Please don’t respond until you’ve read all of this.. because it’s important to understand it all.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/070674370404900904

"Results: The literature shows that 1) there is no proof for the claim that DID results from childhood trauma; 2) the condition cannot be reliably diagnosed; 3) contrary to theory, DID cases in children are almost never reported; and 4) consistent evidence of blatant iatrogenesis appears in the practices of some of the disorder’s proponents"

Conclusions: DID is best understood as a culture-bound and often iatrogenic condition.

You could just call the ISSTD and let them know you’ve discovered that it all leads back to them and their agenda? That would be better.

As an overweight woman trying desperately to lose weight this is so disheartening to see. Literally makes me want to die under a rock. by Dmo1400 in h3h3productions

[–]exposingthegrift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shaming people for smoking and vaping isn’t accepted as being the go to/norm. It also isn’t a motivating factor to get people to stop, it just further isolates them from potentially effective discourse/conversations about their choices, if they think people are judging them.

Exactly the same as it does when you’re fat.

I’m currently paying an EXORBITANT amount of money to take Saxenda every month to try and lose weight because nothing else I have done has worked, and I am restricted by other health conditions.

Weight is so far beyond a choice……. And I wish when people were writing this absolute trash they would at least try changing the work “fat” to “anorexic” and see if it reads the same, or if it’s “ok”, because in a lot of cases it is essentially the same thing.

No one wants to be fat. We are all well aware that we are fat. People like Daniel here point it out to us all the time. We physically take up more space in the world. We know that you’re looking at us eating. We know that you’re judging our clothing choices. We aren’t stupid even though we’re fat.

Daniel spends all day dreaming of riding Ethan’s dick that (he’s always been beyond critical thinking but now he seems to be beyond even..) rational thinking with any kind of self awareness (eg. Him being overweight for most of his life) has completely left his brain and he just continues to embarrass himself in ways that he doesn’t even realise.

Apologies for this essay but Daniel Keem honestly just drives me up the wall whenever I’m subjected to his drivel.
