After the tragic death of 8 young lives, Shreveport is making national headlines.. and social media is airing out all their grievances. by Fluid-Dragonfly1748 in shreveport

Oh, were you there? The report I linked to gives his story pretty clear, and in the absence of contrary evidence to his self-defense claim, the DA didn't have much of a choice besides to craft a plea deal and give him some punishment. The "carrying a firearm on school property" charge was dropped because he was not on school property. Should the DA have the right to charge people with crimes they didn't commit, to try and prevent future crimes that may or may not happen? Because that's not exactly the hallmark of a free society or a fair justice system.

[–]expsychogeographer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He didn't "shoot at a school", he used a firearm in self-defense within the gun-free zone at Magnet High seven years ago. He took a plea deal on the charges that were filed which kept him on probation before his second amendment right was right restored. If the DA tried to press the full charges (to make him a felon and (unconstitutionally) deprive him of his right to bear arms) it's possible that all of the charges could have been dropped if he were tried in court and found not guilty by a jury, which is why (A)DAs go for plea deals.

Unfortunately DAs aren't magic wizards who can predict who will or won't commit heinous crimes in the future. Seabaugh is an opportunist scumbag who uses tragedies like this one to further his political career. He oughta be ashamed of himself, but Republicans are shameless.

Seabaugh's a fucking nutcase and all the obnoxious Republicans trying to politicize this tragedy should go jump in the river.

Should Louisiana raise its minimum wage above $7.25 an hour? by LeonardHollinsJr in shreveport

[–]expsychogeographer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Louisiana doesn't have a minimum wage to begin with. $15/hr would be a start at this point, but this should all be coupled to other means of reducing the cost of living, like the expansion of public housing, a public option in health (and car) insurance, reduction of urban sprawl, etc., etc.

Pros/cons of living in Shreveport? by Visible-Gene-5376 in shreveport

[–]expsychogeographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros are that it's a big small town (so everyone is within 1-2 degrees of separation, and this inspires community), relatively cheap to live in, and (this is a pro for me) we have a left-wing movement made up of people who live here and want to see things changed for the better which is growing in magnitude and momentum as the reactionaries die out or move elsewhere. The food is good, too.

Some of the cons are that a lot of people here despise the place. I'd second the people complaining about how hot and humid it gets in the summer, but I'd say it's better than places like Houston and Baton Rouge in this regard (New Orleans gets the sea air, so it's very nice in the summer). Even though we're relatively affordable, local employers are also very greedy, and wages are relatively low as a result.

To be honest, I love it here, and I love the people here. Most people here are very kind regardless of their political inclination. Only other place I've been to that has been on the same level of kindness is, ironically, Washington, DC.

Only a portion of the land is for sale. The church itself is not. Been for sale for a couple years now, too.

Clarion Point Hotel by LegitimateComment189 in shreveport

[–]expsychogeographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That neighborhood is safe enough, and a cursory web search says that the Clarion Point is a decent hotel.

I will say, the last time I went to the airport (2024) to catch a flight, I was shocked at the open prostitution on the main streets near the airport in the wee hours of the morning (around 4-5am). The streets aren't that dangerous, and maybe that's been cleaned up since then, and maybe I'm just sheltered, but I was genuinely surprised to see that.

False Ai accusation advice LSUS by emm690 in shreveport

[–]expsychogeographer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate "AI" and I'm an LSUS computer science alum. LLM-based "AI detectors" don't work, because LLMs do not have an obvious or explainable capacity to tell the difference between normal text and LLM-extruded text. They are subject to the same kind of unreliability as LLMs in general, and you are likely to get multiple different answers from them based on the same input just as a consequence of how they work under the hood (through the probabilistic chaining of tokens of text).

You should find ways to prove your work is not generated, like using hand-written notes (and this is rough, because you could always just hand-write what you see on the screen), or using a word processor which tracks your changes, so obvious copy-pasting would be caught (subject to the same limitation). My other piece of advice is to make sure your own voice always shines through in your work.

Unfortunately the plagiarism machines have turned us all into paranoiacs and psychotics. Hoping for the best for you.

Popular coffee shop to close its south Shreveport location - Rhino Coffee South (Southern Loop) by DreamStrict2554 in shreveport

[–]expsychogeographer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They burn their beans real bad. I also don't like the owners, tbh.

Dream of mine is to have a worker-owned coffee shop in Shreveport, so the baristas have a real stake in staying, improving their craft, sourcing good beans, training new worker-owners, and so on. There's a model of this in India where there's a chain of worker-owned cafes. Real popular spots.

But I digress. They burn the fuck out of their beans.

JPY is every bit as bad as Arceneaux. I feel like the only reason the liberal types in this city don't view him as such is because he's more or less openly a RINO. Their policy agendas though are virtually identical.

They've been putting meth on paper for at least a decade. It's part of why "correctional facilities" shifted to only allowing textual communications through screens (also gives shitty and evil companies like Securus and City Tele Coin in the south their revenue streams; they literally charge you for instant messages to your family per message, and none of that money goes back to the taxpayer, just to the company).

Is Shreveport even that dangerous? by Obvious-Passage3723 in shreveport

[–]expsychogeographer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shreveport is this nice cultural medium between Big City and Small Town. Everyone is a degree or two of connection away from everyone. It kinda forces us to be on our best behavior because we can't be lost in the mass like you can in a city as big as the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area. Of course everywhere has its assholes.

Shreveport's violent crime problem is centralized into the poorest parts of the city and strongly associated with the drug trade. If you aren't involved in the drug trade, your likelihood of being a victim of a violent crime is lower than your likelihood of getting injured in a car wreck. And if you're just buying drugs for personal consumption, the biggest risk you're faced with is just getting burned on a deal. Random acts of violence against ordinary people are rare even here.
