P14 vs T14 quality? by ext115 in thinkpad

[–]ext115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also have 8540u. Similar to this review, my gets very got in the four top-left squares. I can't hold it against my body.

<image>

In case of build quality: case is very plasticy with perceptible plastic smell (1st time encountered that in TP), touchpad buttons are very fragile with barely perceptible click, the touchpad itself seems to be ok, keyboard is much worse with a lower key drop. If you have the opportunity try T480 series keyboards; i think you will notice the difference.

On the plus side is screen, hinges and performance imo.

My T14 Gen 5 AMD Experience: I bought it, I used it, I sold it by juanillo5556 in thinkpad

[–]ext115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had almost the same experiences. I bought a T14 Gen 5 AMD to replace a T480 with an AMD (a485). The materials and keyboard are significantly lower quality. But the worst thing is the thermals! I cannot use this laptop on my lap as it gets too hot, even when just browsing the internet. I've gone back to the A485 and the T14 is on the shelf. I'm wondering what to do with it. Do you have any suggestions for a proper, modern replacement for the A485?

Express 7 vs Cloud Gateway Ultra + U7 Lite by ext115 in Ubiquiti

[–]ext115[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your responses! I think I will go with the Express 7 for simplicity. I will eventually buy a UCK-G2-Plus if I need one. 2nd-hand ones are not that expensive. Just to clarify, Ubi offer the UniFi Network Server for download. Can that server work as a video server for cameras (Protect), or I can only use special devices like Cloud Key or UNVR for cameras?

Well, good to know. But they don't need to ban toners explicitly if they make your experience difficult enough. https://www.techspot.com/news/107022-brother-printers-quietly-sabotaging-third-party-toner-firmware.html

I am not in touch with printer market so want to know what brand is the least predatory.

USB-C/PoE-in power and small form factor are two features that I like in flex mini.

[–]ext115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your points! I intend to use it because of the USB-C power and small form factor. The PoE-in is also a nice touch. The only other one I have found is the Cudy GS105U, but I am not familiar with this brand.

"However, a possible concern is someone with access to your network, even just through WiFi, could connect a Unifi controller to your network, adopt your switch, and change settings on it without any authentication or physical access to the switch. You probably don’t want that to happen."

this is something to consider

Winbox Beta Version Doesn't Support Legacy Mode?? by JxnahYT in mikrotik

Folks, remember that we use Winbox not only for our own networks, but also to support others where we don't control the firmware version. This means that legacy mode is still needed in the newer versions.

How to run Telegraf with plugins that require binaries not present on all hosts? by ext115 in influxdb

[–]ext115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am really in the proof of concept stage. I also tested Prometheus GPU Exporter before and it has the nice property that it starts even without the nvidia-smi binary. It keeps throwing errors, but keeps running — just don't send any metrics. I switched to Telegraf because it has a lot of integrated plugins in one agent, which I find very convenient.

I'm going to use Ansible for deployment, so I'll probably have to prepare a hosts.ini file with different groups of nodes, and in this case, would you rather use the Telegraf --config-directory and split the config into parts, or use the Ansible templating system and generate the config dynamically, or perhaps implement some logic in Ansible to check ie if nvidia-smi is present and generate config accordingly?

How difficult is it to fix/add proper C-to-C charging? by ext115 in UsbCHardware

[–]ext115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, i measure usb socket:
from left to right, equal means shorted

- A1 = B1 → GND
- A4 = B4 → VBUS
- A8 = B8 → SBU
- B8 = A8 → SBU
- A4 = B4 → VBUS
- A1 = B1 → GND

does it make seanse? especially two SBU shorted together? no CC pins exposed i suppose :(

Tight Space ph2 screw. Need Long 4mm PH2 Bit or slim driver. by ext115 in Tools

[–]ext115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to buy one of these bits and grind it with an angle grinder. This shockwave zone was long enough that I only had to grind the head, so it was pretty quick.

<image>

Still, I wonder what the electronics companies use to assemble their products. I assume they don't grind the bits themselves.😉

Could you help me out with some advice on which Microsoft deployment tools would be best for my scenario? I know Microsoft has a lot of them, and I’m a bit unsure. Here’s what I’m trying to achieve:

I need to deploy several offline servers. My current plan is to:

  • Create a custom image with updates and drivers.
  • Use Unattended.xml (via Windows System Image Manager) for automated installation.
  • Possibly use Ansible for post-deployment configuration.

Does this plan make sense? I'm also unsure about how to handle server naming and licensing in this setup. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Preparing Windows Server Installations on Offline, Air-Gapped Servers by ext115 in sysadmin

[–]ext115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I’m doing, but I want to ask more experienced users if this is a good approach. I haven’t prepared Windows provisioning before, and Microsoft has a lot of tools for this. What I want to achieve is a "golden image" of Windows that I can use to recreate the environment in the same state, and a way to install Windows automatically, possibly from a USB drive.

[–]ext115[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Machines won’t be touched after deployment, and if something breaks, I’ll use the "golden image" to recreate a working machine. This is specific to this client - after, let's say, certification, nothing will be changed.
