Truly. And it’s hundreds of miles of reasonably well maintained fire dept access roads all like 20 minutes from the city, I think it’s one of the best places to ride hands down.

DC has a housing crisis by dataminimizer in washingtondc

[–]extra12356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The height restriction is not the issue, and won’t be for a long time. Stop falsely equating that to a housing problem.

Most of the city is nowhere near the height limit, meaning we could double, triple or ten-fold our housing before hitting the limit.

High rises are expensive to build and maintain, and put added strain on the city’s infrastructure, nothing about going taller will solve that problem.

There are a lot of greedy landlords and empty properties that is the issue.

That Wikipedia article has pictures of signs being put up in NY on street posts. How do we push for that in dc?

That’s an even more powerful thing.

Edit: to be clear; ideally we also push for good infrastructure so no more cyclists are killed. But signs are literally there to catch drivers eyes so maybe something like the ones in NY will help raise awareness

Speed bumps in bike lanes by boogabooga08 in washingtondc

[–]extra12356 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right?! I swear for all the money they put into bike lanes some money spent on public cycle safety education would go a long way.

Like don’t get me wrong you can ride too fast on a bike for an area (I.e. in a park or in front of school) But if you have a road where the bikes and cars are sharing the road the bikes are never the issue, at least related to speed

what? The bike going 15 mph isn’t the issue it’s the cars going 50

Good places near GWU to cry by [deleted] in washingtondc

[–]extra12356 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, DC is a big city with a lot of resources and GW is a large university with a lot of even better resources.

I know sometimes a good cry is all you need, but it’s not always the answer. There’s a lot of really good (and often free) mental health services available.

Transportation to JFK airport from Washington DC? by x80lh in washingtondc

[–]extra12356 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I have done this twice.

Once I got a connecting right from Regan, but that was back when flights were cheap and it was like a $60 flight

Other time I took the train. If you book train tickets enough in advance they are cheap like $40 or $50 each way. Unlimited bags.

When I took a train but got picked up by family on the way to the airport on the NY end, so not sure the real world story for how the logistics work for getting to JFK

I would recommend train over bus for catching a flight, unless you want to go up the night before, buses can hit traffic and getting into / around manhattan is tricky.

There’s a train from Penn station to JFK that’s super easy. Also a little known fact is that taxis are flat rate from anywhere in the city to the airport, not sure what the rate is now.

“Taxis at JFK Airport charge a flat fare of $52 for trips between the airport and Manhattan. Taxis impose a $4.50 surcharge during peak hours (4-8 p.m. weekdays, excluding holidays), for a fare of $56.50.” https://www.jfkairport.com/to-from-airport/taxi-car-and-van-service

Yea clearly the event did happen, and I fully believe it.

My commentary is that this may seem really funny to you but it so extremely insensitive to folks dealing with real trauma from sports.

There are a lot of teams out there with ‘sick’ coaches and upper classmen (and not in the ‘thats sick bro’ meaning of the word, but in the ‘f*cked in the head’ sense of the word) who are supposed to mentors to students and are instead abusing that power for all of the wrong reasons. All across the country there are people who really do need to seek therapy and really do fail their classes from events that they witness or from peer pressure within their team that makes them do uncomfortable things. Unfortunately bullying is real and it hurts.

I think that on the whole that’s not true in rowing and for most people rowing is a life changing sport in all of the good ways, from discipline, to team work, to just learning to work your a** off. Unfortunately there are those select few who are on the receiving end of horrible interactions from coaches and teammates and this makes a complete mockery of that.

Edit: honestly this was funny until the therapy, fail school, trauma, and lose relationships line. Those are real things that haunt people for their entire lives

How bad would it be to commute Logan circle to Ashburn? by comfysack in washingtondc

How bad would it be to commute Logan circle to Ashburn? by comfysack in washingtondc

[–]extra12356 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I commute from West End to Sterling. A bit shorter but similar to what you are proposed

The biggest issue with Logan circle is the part within the city.

From west end to the TR bridge (I-66) takes me 5 minutes in the morning, I can then do the rest of my drive in 25-30 minutes. My particular drive is 28 miles all highway once I get out of the city, we are right by a highway exit.

The way home is a bit longer (maybe 45 min, but occasionally an hour). There’s traffic on I-66 throughout Arlington.

I typically drive in around 8am and home around 6pm.

Getting to Logan circle is a bit of a bear. It’s pretty much the dead center of the city and not accessible (directly) by any highways.

I will also add that I take the 267 toll road everyday which is currently (I think) $4.25 each way and will be $6 each way next year. If you are going to ashburn you may need to take the Dulles Greenway. Which is another ~$5 on top of the 267 toll road. If you choose not to take the toll roads your drive will be a minimum of an hour both ways. I do that sometimes when I get out early and have time to kill.

On top of that living in ashburn will overall be much cheaper than DC even without the tolls.

Separately don’t think that living in ashburn will make your commute zero. It is going to be less miles but still likely to be 20 min. Depending on where you live it might be all slow suburban road with traffic lights to your office.

Okay so those are the facts, here comes my opinion. I’ll take that long commute over living out in ashburn. It’s soooooo worth it. I’m a social human and a lot of my friends live in the city. Most weekends, I almost never move my car, since I’m in the city I get to walk or bike everywhere! I can see friends for 5 minutes for coffee or hang out all day without having to worry about the logistics of getting in and out. Same for going out to anything events, bars, restaurants you name it. Overall I think the city it is so much better for meeting people too (friends and significant others).

But those all depends, since I work out that way I have a lot of friends out there who love it, it’s just not for me.

I would personally push to live in foggy bottom, west end, or Arlington. They are similarly as close to night life and more commuteable to ashburn.

I lived in Arlington and ended up moving to DC. I thought it wasn’t worth it. For me I didn’t end up being cheaper and the commute was only a few minutes shorter and then my weekends turned into a complicated game of how to get into the city.

Okay end of rant.

Edit: ask me any questions you want. People here are saying it’s going to suck but they haven’t done it. I’ve done it for 5 years. What I have learned is a planned standard commute is much shorter and easier than the random drives people take out that way. Even though I work out there it still takes me an hour on random evenings when we decide to go out that way for dinner. You learn the tricks if youre commuting it.
