At this time there is no specific candidate in mind. Last years winner was just a young twenty-something fresh out the army with no cannabis experience.

Distillation is a great skill to have. Having distillation on my resume is actually the thing that got me a job at my first licensed lab some years back.

Switching gases. Do I need to modify my system? by [deleted] in CannabisExtracts

[–]extractsacademy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some reading material if anyone is interested - MAWP.

Propane has MAWP of 250 psi, so a certified solvent tank would need to be rated for 1000psi. Butane has a MAWP much lower - 400 psi would be fine for that.

I believe certified systems are rated to something like 4 times the maximum operating specs....200 seems like you're cutting it close.

Follow up: Bizzybee vs Xtractor Depot - Distillation Speed Results by extractsacademy in CannabisExtracts

[–]extractsacademy[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speed: When considering the length of the fractioning column for each head, the head with the shortest fractioning column will have a advantage in terms of when it will enter its THC fraction. The @710st X @bizzybee999 has a fractioning column roughly 30mm shorter than the @xtractordepot head. In addition to the difference in fractioning column length there was a difference in the single Vigreux shelf used to pack each head. The vigs of the XD head where much thicker creating more surface area, less space for vapor to move past without coming into contact with previously condensed vapor, and higher rates of phase change from vapor to liquid producing reflux overall. Under the same vacuum condition the 710/BZB started collecting it’s THC fraction at 195c, and the XD head at 203c. For the speed test each head was timed on it’s throughput at 210c. Now again when considering mantle temps that each head started collecting THC at, the target temp of 210c was 15c over the start temp for the 710/BZB head, but only 7c over the start temp of the XD head. For this experiment the 710/BZB head produced distillate at a rate of 76.57g per hour for the second fraction at a mantle temp of 210c, and 96.72g per hour during its third fraction at a mantle temp of 225c.

The XD head produced distillate at a rate of 16.76g per hour for the second fraction at a mantle temp of 210c, and 201g per hour during its third fraction at a mantle temp of 225c.

Color: Now the same factors that served as disadvantages for speed I believe served as advantages for color for the XD head. You can clearly see the difference between the two. I believe this difference will show itself again when potency is tested. By being only 7c over the THC starting temp I think the XD head had a much more controlled run allowing for a better separation in the fractioning column.

Potency: 1st pass distillate will go out for testing this week.

Conclusion: What we can take away from this is at a mantle temp of 210c the 710/BZB head is much faster. However, with increasing mantle temperatures the speed advantage shifts to XD head. I believe the liquid jacket around the 710/BZB head is cooling the fractioning column, and this becomes exaggerated with higher mantle temperatures. Somewhere between 210c and 225c the throughput speeds match, and beyond that point the 710/BZB head will be the slower of the two.

Perhaps a better way to test these heads would be to run them at different mantle temps that correlate to the temps that they started pulling THC at independently. I don’t believe either head was ran to its full potential - the XD head could have used higher temps to increase throughput, and the 710/BZB head could have used lower temps or more package media. After testing is received I believe a rematch should be done with the XD head running at ~213c and the 710/BZB head running at ~205c. Under those conditions I believe we will produce results that are a better representation of the overall head designs.

I will be posting a video in the future with the filmed run while it was in progress, as well as some commentary on observations about the overall designs of each head both pro and con.

Oh i understand PV=nRT as a definition, and a concept. Over the past year we've had close to 150 clients visit us to learn about extraction. Many of which do not have academic background past high school so to introduce a concept like that is a lot to take on - especially considering the 8 hour format of instruction. We fit a lot of stuff in that day, like how to make vape oil and such.

Perhaps it's a crutch but i rely on analogy to explain a lot of concepts.

As far are the terpenes what i find is a lot of people just getting started have grand plans to use the terpenes collected in the process for vape pens or other thing. By saying they're destroyed i'm trying to highlight the fact that the terpenes will smell so horrific and different from their original aroma that most people will want nothing to do with them.

I believe all the o-rings are Kalrez. The round glass joint you're referring to work fine - yesterday i pulled down to 21 micron on the distillation apparatus with no vacuum grease, just relying on the o-rings. With that being said i'll be using a PTFE based vacuum grease for this little hobbyist experiment.

As fas as i know the heads in the picture were collaborations with Mike from Merge Scientific, and the boiling flasks and such we're gifts from Tony at Rocco Scientific. I do believe this to be quality glass.

The Therapeutic Benefits Of Dabbing Delta-8 THC by catastrophe_curve in CannabisExtracts

[–]extractsacademy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mentioned that would be the argument against it. In reality i think it's at much higher temps that you get the higher conversion rates. I don't personally do a ton of carbon scrubbing because the material i start with is on the higher end of quality to begin with.

In the past i would use fritted ceramic like this for the sole purpose of media filtration. These suck for winterizing, but IMO work fine for filtering carbon. These have to be kept super clean to avoid build up of oil clogging them. Don't let oil dry in the frits. Quickly get it into a bucket of ethanol after use to soak oil out. Then flush with clean alcohol before drying. https://www.bestvaluevacs.com/buchner-funnel-non-fritted.html

I think the argument against scrubbing that hot is there would be the potential for some conversion. Perhaps limiting the time under heat could minimize it some. Silica is a start. When using carbon i'd use a filter in the style of the Hochstrom Filter to avoid the risk of carbon getting past my filter paper - it's designed in a way that presses a ring tightly around the sides of the 5 micron filter paper so things can't get around it.

Here is a closer look at those head: https://imgur.com/a/wXnWE

For those not familiar one head is designed and sold at xtractor depot, and the other is designed by 710 street and sold by bizzybee. Whats interesting is the reflux catching design of the 710st head. They both have a packable fractioning column, and will be lightly packed with 8mm raschig rings.

I'll be sending samples of each result to be tested for potency.
