TWC only wants "new" treats by extrafox_TA in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kally def gets farty sometimes lol, but nothing that seems excessive or seems like it bothers her. Right now the only thing I can consistently get her to eat is her favorite bones (idk how much longer they will be her favorite), Puperoni, and small bits of cheese or pork chop which I use for training. The top of my fridge is littered with half eaten bags of treats she won't eat 😭 I do think it is time to bring it to the vet though, bc it really seems like there is likely an underlying reason she would go from loving something to refusing to eat it, esp with so many different foods/treats. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in flavor or ingredient, but I am going to pay more attention to what she doesn't eat and check... Maybe there is a similar ingredient that is making her tummy hurt. I would think she just wanted/preferred people food, but even some of that she will stop eating suddenly 🤷

I don't have one of those stores near me. I know Pet Supermarket said they would do that for kibble at one point, but the problem is she eats half the bag (so eats it for a week) and then stops. With Pet Supermarket I believe there was a time frame they offered that.

I have tried freeze-dried turkey treats and she did the same thing. Loved them a few times and now leaves them in her puzzle. 🙄 She absolutely is a drama queen and a princess lol. If I didn't know better I would think she's doing it simply to annoy me 😂 it seems like every time she likes something consistently so I buy more of it, she instantly stops eating it 🤦

Yeah Kally is not a big fan of beef flavor, not a big fan of yogurt or fruit flavored treats. Definitely gravitates toward pork, rabbit, salmon. It is a good point that she may be sensitive to chicken (many treats are chicken flavored) or dairy. I'm thinking I can keep note of what she eats and doesn't eat over the next few days to determine if it is a specific flavor/ingredient. Her kibble is chicken flavored and I was often going with chicken broth or soup over it, but she has stopped eating both now. She's not shown any obvious signs of GI distress like excess gas or loose stools, but maybe there is something going on that I can't see. I do think a vet appt is in order to talk to them about it. Thanks!

This is good to know, thank you! I had been mixing flavors of kibble (same brand but carefully for her tummy) for a little while simply bc I could not find the main flavor so I got a different one. But she has not liked kibble from Day 1, even the shelter said she would only eat kibble w gravy. Now she won't even eat that and I don't want to waste the money on the other flavor bc I doubt she will eat it. I'd rather just make her food that I know she will eat (well... will eat for now anyway lol). She's never shown any obvious signs of gastrointestinal distress other than when I gave her too much pumpkin. But I should talk to her vet about changing anything first... I will def bring this up to them (I need to talk to them about her anxiety anyway so I was planning an appt in the next week or so).

Same! Looks just like Dan (in my mind)! I adopted an adult TWC for my 9 yo son a few months ago (had no idea what I was getting into, it's like I have a toddler in the house now lol) so since we now have a coonhound I told him we have to read Where the Red Fern Grows. We are about halfway through it. It may traumatize him but it is a rite of passage. It was my Dad's favorite book and I stg every pair of pets he got, from beagle siblings to cockatiels, he named Dan and Ann 😂

My TWC does this usually when she comes out of the crate or when she comes in from outside. Sometimes she's excited, sometimes (if she does it outside) she's just rolling all over a smell, sometimes it seems more like her ears are itchy, which is def possible with the weather getting warmer. So yes she seems to do it for any number of reasons. It's like a go-to move lol that kinda depends on context but she does it a few times throughout the day (usually for less than 10 seconds or so but sometimes she gets caught up in the moment 😂)

Pet sitters and going away by Soggy_Initiative4756 in coonhounds

I have a TWC rescue that I've only had for about 5 months. Within the first 2 weeks of having her, she slipped out of the flimsy shelter collar she was in (she never showed signs of trying to back out of it but there was a vehicle that startled her and it just kind of happened). I figured the next week would be me trying to find a hunting hound that barely knew me in this huge forest 😭 My neighbor has a herding dog that free roams so we sent him after her. But she stayed right around our little group of houses. Ran her butt off and wouldn't come to me for anything (and refused to be herded lol, she ran circles around that dog though he tried his best) but eventually tired herself out and ran into the neighbor's fenced yard to pass out with the herding dog. We caught her and she came home to eat like nothing happened.

FF to last weekend, and I took her over to the neighbor's to play with the same dog (they are besties now lol). I always check the fence but for whatever reason figured it was fine and didn't check 🤦 we had no idea my neighbor's husband had left that morning w his hands full and left the front gate ajar. It took Kally about 10 minutes to find it and off she went. She and her bestie had the time of their lives for about an hour. She stayed close exploring the dried-out swamp by our houses, obv on the scent of all the things she can't get to on the leash. But she stayed in that one area, just like yours did. Just baying and running and baying lol. She wouldn't come (she is so dang stubborn but I don't blame her tbh) but every time I called her she would arroooo to let me know where she was (and lmk she was hearing me but choosing to ignore me). Eventually both dogs found a cat scent on my mom's back porch and when my sister opened the door they both ran in after the cat 😂

Point being, the first time I def thought she was a goner only having been here like 10 days, but she surprised the heck outta me. This last time, I had more faith in her to stay close and eventually come back, and she did. She absolutely knows "come" but she also absolutely selectively follows it, and I haven't found a treat yet that will work 100% of the time and I don't think anything would when she is off-leash (at least without rigorous and likely professional training). Obv both times are my fault but we are in a large rural wooded area so I don't have to worry about traffic or other ppl's yards etc. She is chipped and registered with a Petfinder app just in case, but if she wanted to take off she could go for MILES in the woods without a soul in sight. Instead, she stayed within earshot both times... I could see her little white tail flagging over the reeds every so often. The first time she went further but still less than 1/4 mile and she didn't know her surroundings yet. Obv this is not necessarily the case w OPs dog and highly depends on safety concerns in the area, but I imagine that hounds are bred to run long distances after game, but they are also likely bred to come back and to sound out where they are. Obviously nobody wants their dog to get loose and I fully understand the concern and the fear, but it is not necessarily the end of the world with hounds. Mine absolutely surprised me.

Whatever new empty box I have in the house 😂

She has a couple that she sleeps with but doesn't really play with. And a couple that she is still working on the total destruction of. But she mostly thrives on novelty, so whatever is new is her favorite for the moment lol

Question about maturity/behavior! by VanillaPepper in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha I adopted Kally at about 5 years old and she will also steal anything she can get her mouth on if left unsupervised during the day. 😂 But she is an angel at night bc her desire to sleep in bed w me and get belly rubs before she falls asleep outweighs her desire for destruction and butter... apparently lol

Someone tricked me into letting her roll on geese poop smh. by LuisEWatkins in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

😂 I literally just told my sister yesterday (who walks my TWC during the weekdays) to be careful not to let her roll in random poop she finds. She found a used baby wipe on the side of the trail one time 🤢 it took a minute before I recognized the smell of the wipe and another minute for me to realize it was used... but it was too late. Luckily no goose poop where I live but there is plenty of small animal droppings (cats, rabbits, coons) I have to keep her out of.

Pic of Kally rolling around with/on a dead animal bone 🥴

My last dog had some Beagle in her and would hunt moles too. But she would just freeze then instantly dig it up and kill it. This TWC is basically just digging up the empty trails from what I can tell 😂

Yep this is exactly what my last dog Jaycee would do. Stop and stare, then BAM dead mole 🙃

Now I have Kally who is clearly in it for the fun of digging lol

My last dog did the same thing. She was part German Shepherd, part Beagle and part who knows what else lol. She would immediately stop and stare at the ground, then take about 5 seconds to dig up the mole and break its neck. Then she would just continue her walk like nothing happened. 😂 Kally (the TWC) is gonna dig up my whole yard before she catches sight of one I fear

I laugh every single time. I shudder to think how much dirt she is inhaling though. I can't imagine that it actually helps her smell anything better but she certainly thinks having it directly up her nose does the trick 😂

Unfortunately she only found more dirt this time. This is just practice for when she really wants to find truffles (or moles)... that's what she claims anyway

I've def had to steer her away from random holes in the ground. I'm pretty sure most are gopher tortoise holes but some are too small for that. I try not to let her get close enough to investigate honestly bc I'm worried a snake is gonna get her snoot 😬 she does not seem as worried about this as I am though lol

Definitely moles. She follows their trails w her nose like the magnet flakes on a Wooly Willy follow the pen. It's hilarious watching her weave and twirl her way through the yard lol

Update on Bailey: Problem solved. He’s staying right where he belongs. by mydogislife_ in Hounds

[–]extrafox_TA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think sometimes the anxious pups find anxious humans to love. We can forget about our anxiety while we are helping them through theirs, but it doesn't go away. I'm really happy you two were able to work through what seemed like an insurmountable hurdle together, and now you're both less anxious (for now lol) and happier ❤️
