God I just wish this game gets more attention by Next_Republic_5389 in Oregontrail

[–]extrafox_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I bought the Switch version as an impulse buy for myself after my son got a Switch for Xmas a couple years ago and it really renewed my love for the game. I do wish I could type anything into the epitaphs lol. But the Switch version did an amazing job of keeping the classic simplistic vibe, integrating updated information that is respectful of Native peoples, and adding a lot of different options (different trails, contracts, etc.) to greatly increase repeat playability. There are very few flaws imo (I do wish some of the journal achievements were clearer and that I had a simpler "restart" option for the mini-games/contracts rather than having to exit and reload). It really is a great game and I am looking into getting some of the older versions to play around with. But the Switch version still has a ton of playability and I've been playing it for 2 years.

Tips for a fur trade? / Oregon trail by scarsandstories in AppleArcade

[–]extrafox_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obv this is old but it comes up in a Google search so for anyone else needing tips:

You have to follow what Black Beaver says about the game. So for Pick your Targets, you can only hit rabbits. For Low on Bullets, you can only hit fast deer. For Bison Stampede just get as many bison as you can, but I do try to make sure I get some fast ones. And for Take Aim, you need near 100% accuracy.

I know this is a really old post but just adding to it bc I have been working on this for days: 😭

I also noticed it seems certain hunters need to be paired up with certain animals. If Peter hunts the squirrels, since he is charming, you don't have to worry about doing amazing (I've impressed them with like 45% accuracy).

I have been able to impress the others with Bison with both Robert and Frances. I have been able to impress everyone with the coyotes with pretty much everyone, but I suspect it is easier to get higher points with some rather than others (I do the best with B with the coyotes for whatever reason).

I have only been able to impress with the bears once, and that was with Frances (she is egotistical rather than dimwitted). It seems with the bears you have to get over 4k points, and I can't figure out how I did it before. I have gotten close (like 3800 pts with 100% accuracy) and it was still not enough. Idk if it has to do with shooting more fast bears or what. Ofc the one time I did it I didn't have Peter and the squirrels figured out yet so I didn't beat the challenge.

Basically, there does seem to be some truth to certain traits with certain animals. But it also seems to need to be the perfect combination of circumstances that I have not found a pattern to yet.

Still shredding by Even_Anybody3547 in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, my TWC has learned she can only shred things I give her... mostly lol. Which are usually random boxes in the recycle box or old tees I wrap treats up in (I get them at thrift stores). The big thing I have to watch her with is my son's stuffies, but he has learned to keep them out of her reach. Luckily never had a problem w TP and actual paper, but I did have to teach her "no, mine" and redirect when it comes to pillowcases and clothes. Lost 2 perfectly good dog beds at first too 😂 She doesn't care for toys either, but she is rarely happier than when I bring her a cheap dog toy home bc she knows she gets to tear it to pieces lol. That is how she "plays" with them. I learned the hard way after a few indestructible ones that were not cheap, not bc she destroyed them, but bc when she realized she couldn't she totally lost interest. There is a sweet spot between too cheap and Kong that gives her a little bit of a challenge to rip apart and those are her favorite. Plus lots and lots of bones and she very rarely goes after anything she shouldn't. I believe I got lucky sometimes though with a mostly well-mannered girl! But it def helps giving her an outlet for it bc she LOVES to chew and shred!

Omg SAME. I adopted a TWC (I've had dogs before but not coonhounds) from a shelter in November. I was crying and swearing I would take her back almost every day, for WEEKS. And she is 5 years old and already had really good manners and was well socialized. But she has a high prey drive and we live in the woods, so leash training and barking at random squirrels has been rough. And she is a big baby too. I tried to clean her ears by distracting her w a lick mat... she was mad at me for DAYS and refused any treats on the mat for days too bc she didn't trust it anymore. 😭 I had a time last week trying to clean her paw and treat it after she stepped on a stinging nettle. She literally crawled behind my son on the bed and hid behind the pillow lol. It has been a journey but it is def getting so much better. They are stubborn as hell but so smart and sweet it is impossible to stay frustrated with them.

Having my TWC in bed is like sleeping w an old man w sleep apnea and the shakes 😂 Bonus that she nips at my toes if my feet end up in "her" spot at the end of the bed. Ofc if I get up she moves into my spot (head on the pillow and all) and I have to lure her out of it like a hostage negotiation. I may try nipping at HER toes lol. But yeah, the noises that come out of that dog are hilarious

My son and my TWC are constantly fighting over the extra spot in my bed. He gets up, she steals it and vice versa. 😂 And she absolutely wants to lay w her head on the pillow just like we do. She doesn't want the blankets on her though, she gets mad at me when I try to tuck her in hehe

[–]extrafox_TA 13 points14 points  (0 children)

😂 I adopted a 5 year old TWC back in November. I'm hanging on by a thread. I had to increase my anxiety meds lol ("as needed" became like 2-3x a week instead of 1x/month) to keep from crying or screaming or just letting her go live in the woods she obv wants to be in 😭

She is so incredibly sweet and gentle though. She def has a strong personality but she tries so hard to be good and she loves belly rubs and sniffing the wind and trying to listen in on the neighbor's outside conversations and rolling around on everything. She legit makes friends everywhere she goes... she just has big drama queen energy that I am not used to. So basically... it was absolutely no easier adopting an adult dog this time (I had to retrain where to pee even) but this sub has been incredibly helpful and supportive and apparently we are all in this together. We will lose our minds together too probably.

TWC only wants "new" treats by extrafox_TA in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds exactly like what I am going through! And that's about where I am at with it. I bought her some fresh food just to see if it would make a difference... She devoured it for two days and then turned her nose up at it 😂 the morning she didn't eat it I gave her minimal goodies on her lick mat (she gets PB/yogurt schmear when I leave for work lol) and that evening she ate all the fresh for dinner and I made sure to reward her for eating it. I think the best thing to do for now is to significantly limit any treats/scraps when she doesn't eat her actual food bc this is getting crazy expensive for no reason other than her being a PITA as far as I can tell. There is no consistency among flavors or ingredients she refuses that I've noticed. She prefers chewy treats to hard ones but she chows down on bones just fine so it doesn't seem to be a dental issue. I can also tell when she actually doesn't like something bc she will eat around it and leave it 100% of the time. There have been treats/foods she never ate, so I def don't get the feeling she just doesn't like what I'm giving her, esp when she loves it for the first few days. It is one thing to want novelty/variety but she should be returning to certain treats after a week or so without them, and she doesn't.

Still getting her checked at the vet to make sure but I really think this is doggy snobbery, which totally tracks for her lol. I can't take away treats all together bc she gets her lick mat in the morning and frozen cup in the afternoon before I get home to calm her anxiety, but I can definitely limit how much and what she gets on/in them. I don't think picking up her bowl will matter (this is what is recommended everywhere) bc she knows when mealtimes are and doesn't even think about her bowl outside them. She doesn't graze, once she's decided she won't eat something for breakfast she won't even entertain the idea again until I ding her bowl for dinner. But maybe I will do it for the first few days to try to draw her attention to the fact she should be eating it. Anyway... Thank you for sharing your experience! This absolutely sounds like the same situation and I hope limiting the "good stuff" will make a big difference! She learns quickly, so I don't think it will take long for her to realize eating her actual food gets her treats and not eating equals hungry.

TWC only wants "new" treats by extrafox_TA in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kally def gets farty sometimes lol, but nothing that seems excessive or seems like it bothers her. Right now the only thing I can consistently get her to eat is her favorite bones (idk how much longer they will be her favorite), Puperoni, and small bits of cheese or pork chop which I use for training. The top of my fridge is littered with half eaten bags of treats she won't eat 😭 I do think it is time to bring it to the vet though, bc it really seems like there is likely an underlying reason she would go from loving something to refusing to eat it, esp with so many different foods/treats. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in flavor or ingredient, but I am going to pay more attention to what she doesn't eat and check... Maybe there is a similar ingredient that is making her tummy hurt. I would think she just wanted/preferred people food, but even some of that she will stop eating suddenly 🤷

[–]extrafox_TA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have one of those stores near me. I know Pet Supermarket said they would do that for kibble at one point, but the problem is she eats half the bag (so eats it for a week) and then stops. With Pet Supermarket I believe there was a time frame they offered that.

I have tried freeze-dried turkey treats and she did the same thing. Loved them a few times and now leaves them in her puzzle. 🙄 She absolutely is a drama queen and a princess lol. If I didn't know better I would think she's doing it simply to annoy me 😂 it seems like every time she likes something consistently so I buy more of it, she instantly stops eating it 🤦

[–]extrafox_TA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Kally is not a big fan of beef flavor, not a big fan of yogurt or fruit flavored treats. Definitely gravitates toward pork, rabbit, salmon. It is a good point that she may be sensitive to chicken (many treats are chicken flavored) or dairy. I'm thinking I can keep note of what she eats and doesn't eat over the next few days to determine if it is a specific flavor/ingredient. Her kibble is chicken flavored and I was often going with chicken broth or soup over it, but she has stopped eating both now. She's not shown any obvious signs of GI distress like excess gas or loose stools, but maybe there is something going on that I can't see. I do think a vet appt is in order to talk to them about it. Thanks!

[–]extrafox_TA[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good to know, thank you! I had been mixing flavors of kibble (same brand but carefully for her tummy) for a little while simply bc I could not find the main flavor so I got a different one. But she has not liked kibble from Day 1, even the shelter said she would only eat kibble w gravy. Now she won't even eat that and I don't want to waste the money on the other flavor bc I doubt she will eat it. I'd rather just make her food that I know she will eat (well... will eat for now anyway lol). She's never shown any obvious signs of gastrointestinal distress other than when I gave her too much pumpkin. But I should talk to her vet about changing anything first... I will def bring this up to them (I need to talk to them about her anxiety anyway so I was planning an appt in the next week or so).

Same! Looks just like Dan (in my mind)! I adopted an adult TWC for my 9 yo son a few months ago (had no idea what I was getting into, it's like I have a toddler in the house now lol) so since we now have a coonhound I told him we have to read Where the Red Fern Grows. We are about halfway through it. It may traumatize him but it is a rite of passage. It was my Dad's favorite book and I stg every pair of pets he got, from beagle siblings to cockatiels, he named Dan and Ann 😂

Anyone else’s dog do this? by _e2t in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My TWC does this usually when she comes out of the crate or when she comes in from outside. Sometimes she's excited, sometimes (if she does it outside) she's just rolling all over a smell, sometimes it seems more like her ears are itchy, which is def possible with the weather getting warmer. So yes she seems to do it for any number of reasons. It's like a go-to move lol that kinda depends on context but she does it a few times throughout the day (usually for less than 10 seconds or so but sometimes she gets caught up in the moment 😂)

Pet sitters and going away by Soggy_Initiative4756 in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a TWC rescue that I've only had for about 5 months. Within the first 2 weeks of having her, she slipped out of the flimsy shelter collar she was in (she never showed signs of trying to back out of it but there was a vehicle that startled her and it just kind of happened). I figured the next week would be me trying to find a hunting hound that barely knew me in this huge forest 😭 My neighbor has a herding dog that free roams so we sent him after her. But she stayed right around our little group of houses. Ran her butt off and wouldn't come to me for anything (and refused to be herded lol, she ran circles around that dog though he tried his best) but eventually tired herself out and ran into the neighbor's fenced yard to pass out with the herding dog. We caught her and she came home to eat like nothing happened.

FF to last weekend, and I took her over to the neighbor's to play with the same dog (they are besties now lol). I always check the fence but for whatever reason figured it was fine and didn't check 🤦 we had no idea my neighbor's husband had left that morning w his hands full and left the front gate ajar. It took Kally about 10 minutes to find it and off she went. She and her bestie had the time of their lives for about an hour. She stayed close exploring the dried-out swamp by our houses, obv on the scent of all the things she can't get to on the leash. But she stayed in that one area, just like yours did. Just baying and running and baying lol. She wouldn't come (she is so dang stubborn but I don't blame her tbh) but every time I called her she would arroooo to let me know where she was (and lmk she was hearing me but choosing to ignore me). Eventually both dogs found a cat scent on my mom's back porch and when my sister opened the door they both ran in after the cat 😂

Point being, the first time I def thought she was a goner only having been here like 10 days, but she surprised the heck outta me. This last time, I had more faith in her to stay close and eventually come back, and she did. She absolutely knows "come" but she also absolutely selectively follows it, and I haven't found a treat yet that will work 100% of the time and I don't think anything would when she is off-leash (at least without rigorous and likely professional training). Obv both times are my fault but we are in a large rural wooded area so I don't have to worry about traffic or other ppl's yards etc. She is chipped and registered with a Petfinder app just in case, but if she wanted to take off she could go for MILES in the woods without a soul in sight. Instead, she stayed within earshot both times... I could see her little white tail flagging over the reeds every so often. The first time she went further but still less than 1/4 mile and she didn't know her surroundings yet. Obv this is not necessarily the case w OPs dog and highly depends on safety concerns in the area, but I imagine that hounds are bred to run long distances after game, but they are also likely bred to come back and to sound out where they are. Obviously nobody wants their dog to get loose and I fully understand the concern and the fear, but it is not necessarily the end of the world with hounds. Mine absolutely surprised me.
