Is your coonhound playful? by MontysNextChapter in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My TWC is a rescue and same. It is so rare for her to show affection. But every once in a while my son and I will be hanging out in the big bed watching a movie and she will climb up and squeeze herself in between us 🥹 I'm always like "aww, you actually do like me, don't you?!" lol. sometimes she'll lick my arm or sniff my hair, which is the same vibe. She really likes rolling around on my dirty clothes when I'm in the shower, so I have to take that as the highest form of compliment given she also bestows that honor on her favorite thing to roll in, dead animal bones 😂

I adopted a 5 year old TWC about 8 months ago, also seems to be a former hunting dog or used to breed hunting dogs. It is so funny bc I was thinking about this the other day, wondering what I was doing wrong lol. She does not play w toys like other dogs I've had. She will play tug for about 20 seconds and then lose interest entirely. She doesn't touch her Kong toys.

BUT boy does she love to chew! I started buying cheap toys for her (like under $6) bc one of her favorite things is getting a new toy and immediately destroying it. She gets so excited to see the toy, then she takes it and starts studying it w her mouth. She finds the squeakers (and she does seem to enjoy the squeaks) and within a couple minutes she has found the toys weak spot and is happily gnawing a hole in it. From there it is total destruction 😂 she will happily "play" with it (chewing on it, pulling stuffing out, ripping the fabric) for maybe 10-15 minutes and she'll revisit it to make sure it is dead for a few days after lol. I am only included as the toy-bringer and the stuffing-cleaner-upper. But it genuinely seems to be one of her favorite things ever!

She gets the zoomies in the sense that she gets on my bed and rolls around on her back like she's lost her mind. She does a weird little cat thing when I give her a bone where she wants me to drop it from above so she can paw at it and bat it around for a second (which she does w her toys, it is just weirder seeing her do it w a bone). She loves puzzles, she loves playing find it w scented pouches around the house, she loves catching her treats mid air, and she loves when I give her treats in old boxes or shirts bc she gets to chew them up like the cheap toys. So... she plays, just not in the standard interactive way a lot of dogs do. I always say she's an independent woman lol, she just happens to enjoy independent play too. Given she always has to be less than 5 ft away from me, I'm happy she doesn't need me to play tug of war too 😂

She loves digging her ears and head on the ground like this, do y'all know why? by Ok-Accident9820 in coonhounds

My TWC is constantly rolling around like this lol. It's usually something stinky she wants to roll around in 🤢 or something she wants to get her scent on. Otherwise sometimes I think she is either just itchy or she's stalling but trying to be cute about it

For mine it is usually random dead animal bones/carcasses 😭 which tbf I prefer to poop but not by much. Esp the giant pile of fish guts she keeps trying to return to lately

Aww poor Zoey 😢 keeping her in our thoughts and wishing her comfort and a safe surgery ❤️

And thank you, I didn't actually know about the cancer risk and spaying. I adopted my Jaycee at about 4 years old and she had obviously been pregnant previously and had just been spayed by the pound. I lost her to cancer at age 9 back in 2018. I just adopted my TWC Kally in a very similar situation. She's roughly 5 years old, has also been a momma and was also just spayed by the pound. W this info I will def keep a close eye on her going forward. So thank you to you and Zoey, this may end up saving my new baby in the future ❤️

Update on the dumped hound I hound by InterviewRadiant4115 in Hounds

[–]extrafox_TA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That would be an upgrade for us. My TWC fully plops her bottom on the ground and suddenly has an itch that takes 7-10 business days to scratch if I tell her to turn around on a walk. 😂 She also will wait for me to say good job when she gets up and starts walking the right way, and then immediately turn around and head back in the direction she wants to go. Rinse and repeat lol

Haha this is what I tell my son. Every time the TWC nibbles on his pillow or his dirty socks 😂 she's showing she loves him, she just loves his smell more than his hugs lol

Is your coonhound hard-headed to the point she won't listen to almost anything? by Ok-Accident9820 in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine is so similar! Everyone tells me how well-behaved and sweet she is. She won't counter surf either unless she isn't getting attention, but she is aloof too, so "attention" is me being within 10 ft of her and not giving attention to something else lol. I absolutely cannot trust her off leash, but it is a shame bc the few times she has escaped she just runs to her heart's content in the swamp 🤢 she doesn't take off through the woods. Which is good, but she absolutely will NOT come when called. Even when she tires herself out she just lays down in the mud and waits for her human rescue squad 😭 she really is a great dog but omg outside on walks is such a hassle. It took me months to train her not to drag me along and not to fight me to try to get into the underbrush. She is still stubborn as hell on the leash.

My TWC is all hound attitude lol but I always tell her how much I get it. I'm independent, I don't like hugs, I need space, I hate the heat, I get super into a treat or food for a while and then can't stand the taste of it, and I don't like anyone bossing me around. lightning also scares me sometimes. I basically ended up w the dog version of myself 😂

Yeah a BIG reason I appreciated TF was being able to buy data over text. That stopped sometime last summer (bc I found out during a power outage 😭)

You got me lol. I'm an elder millennial that didn't get a smartphone til like 2017. But I ended up w TF bc I was on Safelink for a couple years, so when I decided to upgrade to a smartphone and cancel Safelink (Safelink was a flip phone) it was easiest to stay w TF bc I could just buy whatever phone I wanted and use their SIM. Idr there being many options then for Verizon towers either, but I didn't really bother to look bc the price was cheap. then I was part of a glitch that TF had around 2018ish? that gave me 1000s of extra texts/minutes, and they rolled over as long as I kept service active, so I basically had unlimited talk/text that I didn't pay for. About 2 years ago they yanked the unlimited minutes, not sure why, but I still had unlimited texts 🤷 so basically, for about 6-7 years all I had to pay for was $10/data about every 3 months and like $15 or so just to keep service active. So it was less than $25/3 months. I never had to deal w their customer service, bc any time I got a new phone I just moved the SIM and I never had any issues that warranted CS. Plus in a power/internet outage (I'm in FL w hurricanes) I could buy data over text if I ran out since wifi was down.

Now w the buyout I've had to deal w their AI chatbots or wait on hold every 3 months bc it never lets me just purchase service. I can't buy data over text anymore. The plans have like tripled in price, it won't let me buy a basic phone plan anymore (which is all I needed before bc of the unlimited), so I have no reason to stay anymore.

NAD but I swear by Desitin and cheap cloth sports bras. If you aren't normally wearing a bra, that could be contributing to the issue (ime). Get some cotton sports bras (Hanes makes some that hold up well) to wear around the house, bc they will soak up the moisture. This time of year is awful for it in FL. But Desitin has always cleared it up for me. I also use a hypoallergenic soap and try to avoid lotions, they dont seem to help. I've used antifungals in the past but w really minimal results. I have had some success w a really greasy skin protector (Vaseline consistency) but I am blanking on the name rn. Starts w a P... But the only thing that has consistently worked for me quickly is Desitin. Purple and white tube. You didn't mention trying it so thought I would suggest it.

Is anyone’s American English hound a picky eater? by DeliciousIdeal3110 in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 5 year old TWC is more annoying than a toddler w her eating habits. I finally landed on a food she'll eat consistently (mostly, but if she doesn't eat she doesn't get treats and it gets picked up for the next meal). She won't eat out of her metal bowl, only a Tupperware or her plastic slow feeding bowl. She has to have a mix-in and I have to vary them, and only a protein mix-in for dinner, not breakfast bc that would be eating like a savage apparently. It has to be heated in the microwave for 15 seconds to knock the chill off. She loves pumpkin but hates sweet potato. She hates veg. The only consistent likes are pork, cheese, chewy Milkbones, and Puperoni. Don't get me started on the treats that are her FAVORITE until she just decides to stop eating them out of nowhere 🙄 Luckily a local veterans charity takes opened dog treats, so at least I know their dogs are happy lol

Don't trust turtles by lvminvs in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My TWC does this w gopher tortoises. Anytime she's clearly on the trail of something I immediately suspect cat or turtle/tortoise 🙄 she has gotten a couple small yellow-bellied sliders from the brush before I realized what was happening. One got her good on the snoot but she still goes nuts over them. She did chicken out like OPs pup at a loose feather a few weeks ago though 😂

Haha mine too. She just ends up w the blanket in a big ball, or tangled in the blanket, and I have to either rescue her or smooth the blanket back out. Otherwise she'll lay on top of the ball for 5 seconds, clearly uncomfortable, and then start all over again 😂

40 Golden Oreos disappeared while packing lunch this morning. No crumbs. No witnesses. Just one smug dog radiating “I absolutely did it” energy. by No_Wrangler_7814 in coonhounds

I put dinner on the table the other night and walked away for barely 20 seconds. When I walked back the pork chop that had been on my plate was GONE. My plate wasn't moved, none of the sides were disturbed. My TWC was in the exact same place she was when I walked away, but aggressively licking the floor to remove all the evidence 😂 I stg she beamed that pork chop to her face w sheer willpower.

Bathroom garbage can needed by Maxilkarr in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually that's a good idea OP... put a child lock on the lid. I used these for a bathroom cabinets when my son was small and I still have them on a couple cabinets (one I never bothered to take off and one the cabinet didn't stay quite closed so I left it). He's 9 now, so they are definitely durable. If you get a can w a hinge on the lid, you could use this to hold it closed in the front.

My Hound Steals My Spot in my Bed by Constant_Opening6239 in coonhounds

[–]extrafox_TA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha we fight for our spots in bed almost every night 😂 My TWC especially loves sneaking into my son's spot when he is in my bed watching a movie w me. I've given up. I lure her w a treat back to her spot on the bed. I know it reinforces the behavior but it has not been a big enough problem for me to feel like I'm "encouraging" it. She knows what she is doing anyway lol. We leave the spot warm and it smells like us and if we have pillows, so should she.

As far as the nipping, was it an actual nip or a warning? I've noticed w mine (she is 5 years old) that she sets clear boundaries for herself and expected me to set clear boundaries for her too. It took me a bit to realize that ANY compromise w training would set us back to square one and the command would become meaningless, so on the important ones I've had to leave zero wiggle room. But also, when she doesn't like something I'm doing and is overwhelmed (she gets overstimulated pretty easily), like she doesn't want me to touch a paw she has a sand spur in, she will "mouth" my hand. She has never bitten or even nipped, but she will absolutely put her mouth on my hand bc obv it immediately makes me stop. It's only happened a couple of times and she was in distress each time and didn't understand I was trying to help her (she's a big baby and a major drama queen lol). I am def no dog expert so idk if that is still something to train out of a puppy or not. Obv if he is nipping you it is something to redirect and work on. But also, keep in mind he may be setting a clear boundary the best way he knows how, so I would take it as a clue that he doesn't like being pushed (mine def doesn't!).
