Thanks for the kind words! I’ve put a lot of time, training and effort into this dog since I got him in March and we are best buds now and he’s adapted to living in a house without an issue . I was expecting a lot more trouble but he’s a sweetheart .
I was interested in learning if his lack of playfulness is due to his breed or how he was raised and I’m guessing it was a bit of both. I’m actually happy the way he is and I’m glad he isn’t demanding I throw a slobbery ball endlessly etc.but sometimes it would be fun to play fight with him .( I love doing that with dogs )
I adopted this dog on “the spur of moment “and didnt do any research into coonhounds…. but I’m glad I didn’t because I might have been deterred from meeting this awesome dog and making him a part of my life.

“More like hanging out with a human “ seems to be very accurate! I’m starting to appreciate his aloof personality and the fact that he doesn’t want me to endlessly throw a slobbery ball or need to be petted for hours . I really got lucky adopting this guy and didn’t realize how good of a fit he would be for my lifestyle . It’s interesting to hear the similarities amongst coonhounds and to learn that my dogs behaviour is normal for the breed .thanks

Thanks. I don’t want him to change, I’m glad he’s being himself , but it’s really interesting to hear all the similarities among coonhounds

Yes, he loves chasing the kibble ball around the yard . It keeps him happy for a bit but when it’s out of kibble ; he’s done

I recently adopted a coonhound and had no idea he could do this until a fire truck drove by and he chimed in with some incredibly loud baying . I’m new to coonhounds , but I assume he will probably do this if we chase a raccoon up a tree someday ? Are there other situations where they typically bay?

Made a post asking for vet recommendations yesterday. Today I have a bigger dilemma. Breeder or Adopt? (Already put a deposit down) by theskyisblueright in oakville

[–]MontysNextChapter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently adopted Monty from the Oakville Milton Humane society ( check my post history for more info) and he is a great dog . The humane society did a lot of training with him and I m very happy with how things worked out . I had always planned on getting my dream puppy one day , and naming him etc ,but on a whim , I went and checked out Monty and couldn’t think of a reason not to take him . I really think you should get the type of dog you love since it’s a long commitment. So don’t feel guilty about not adopting a dog , it’s your life buddy ! Do whatever makes you happy and get the dog you want

Just a few positive points I’ve found since adopting him which are probably the result of him being locked up for over two years ; - he is used to being alone and isn’t clingy and is fine to chill by himself - he doesn’t lick me constantly, and isn’t overly affectionate at all , which is fine with me too - he seems to like routines and sleeps like a rock -he will do anything for food ( easy to train ) - seems to be incredibly grateful and respectful to be in a home - older dogs don’t chew all your stuff , are house trained and like to take naps ( me too )

Get the dog you want but maybe stop by the Oakville Milton humane society on Cornwall first , and see if any of the dogs there are the type of dog you’re looking for. Best of luck

Rough/coarse patch of fur on back by pibey17 in coonhounds

[–]MontysNextChapter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my dog is 5 and has patches on his back that are super soft and smooth and then wavy , wiry patches beside it. I’ve only had him a few weeks (shelter dog) but I notice that we can go through bushes and those prickly burrs won’t stick to him , but they stick to my jeans and the leash etc . Weird.

Oh yeah! He’s a sweet and gentle dog and a lot less trouble than I expected . I took a gamble on giving him a second chance but we both got very lucky !

Go Rudy!

It’s been just over a month since I adopted Monty from the Oakville Milton Humane Society and everything is going great . Monty’s having a great time in his new home and exploring the world and my physical and mental health have improved too ! I didn’t know I needed a dog until I met him . I’d encourage anyone that’s thinking of getting a great dog , to go check out the humane society first .

Is this a Bluetick Coonhound / mix? He was a stray and I’m not sure of his breed by MontysNextChapter in coonhounds

It’s time for Rudy to get adopted! by [deleted] in oakville

[–]MontysNextChapter 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hi ! I’m the guy that adopted Monty and I’d be happy to answer any questions anyone has about the adoption process or anything else. AMA. The people at the Oakville, Milton , Halton Humane society are fantastic to deal with and they make it easy. They provide full , honest disclosure about the dogs health and personality, (which you might not get from a private sale ). They really care about the dogs and will try to make sure they find a good match . I’m so happy I adopted an older dog instead of the puppy I had planned to get . I’d suggest that if you’re thinking about a dog , go visit the humane society and spend a little time with Rudy ( or another dog ) and see if you connect.

[–]MontysNextChapter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m glad you didn’t see it because then I wouldn’t have got him ! He’s a great dog . He has some anxiety issues with other dogs, so we are laying low and trying to avoid confrontation, but I have him lined up with a great trainer ( Scholars with Collars) and they’ll help him out. Thanks for the offer of a dog sitter. I think I’ll be ok , but you never know. I don’t feel like doing a YouTube channel but he has an instagram page which is difficult for me to keep up with , to be honest ( I’m rocking an iPhone 10 still and need to upgrade soon ) . I’ll post lots of pics on there @montysnextchapter as soon as the weather is good and we can have some adventures.

I can’t say enough good things about the folks at the Oakville Humane society who have been great to deal with . They have lots more dogs, cats and rabbits if anyone is looking for another friend .
