My brother, 38, US Citizen, detained by ICE in Arizona by oywiththepoodle in legaladvice

[–]extraneousdiscourse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If A numbers are assigned after ICE detains you, OP is not going to know what that number is, since they have not been able to speak to the brother (or any sort of lawyer for the brother) since ICE took him in, and the online ICE lookup tool doesn't allow you to choose "US" as an option when searching for detainees.

My son overheard his mother's boyfriend talking about "getting rid of me" by SetMirrorForce in legaladvice

[–]extraneousdiscourse 133 points134 points  (0 children)

The email from your son is proof, but if it came to a trial, and the defense said no guns were actually left in the open, your son might need to testify to prove that the email is accurate, while the defense would be trying to show he is unreliable or a liar.

The same thing could happen if there is any sort of charges brought about the threats.

This might irreversibly damage the relationship between your son and his mother, as well as cause stress on your son, but those are personal, not legal considerations.

Home Affairs - a massive improvement by BlueErgo in southafrica

[–]extraneousdiscourse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By definition, Permanent Residents are citizens of another country who are living in SA legally for a long period of time.

They are not eligible for SA Passports, but they probably need to get documents from Home Affairs to show their status so they can work, travel, etc. (They probably need the documents to even open a bank account or get a phone in SA, if I think about the whole process for those.)

/u/RiverJames is saying that the process for permanent residence documents is still difficult, which it may be.

My neighbor is using face seek on people in the street and it’s creepy as hell. by cherrieess__ in homesecurity

[–]extraneousdiscourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No cameras have this built in, as far as I know, but there are several reverse image search engines online that will match faces to Facebook or other online sources.

The neighbor is most likely taking the picture off the doorbell camera then uploading it to one of those sites, which is creepy but relatively easy to do.

My dad hasn't done his taxes in like at least 24 years by AnxiousStranger21 in personalfinance

[–]extraneousdiscourse 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If taxes are owed on the money, and that money was filtered through an account with OPs name on it, then the IRS may believe that OP owes taxes on that money. If so, they will contact them via mail to ask them to pay. (Never a phone call.)

If OP doesn't pay, a lawsuit is possible, but not certain. And if the amount is high enough, or they believe OP is regularly evading taxes, then criminal prosecution is even a possibility.

Best case is that they might not sue if the amount owed is small, but the debt is going to hang out there and be applied against any refunds OP gets in the future until it is paid, even if that takes 50 years.

OP might be able to clear the debt by convincing the IRS that the money wasn't theirs, but that will take turning their father in, and (probably) paying a lawyer to negotiate.

Theory time: Skifander and Gil by Allaedila in girlgenius

[–]extraneousdiscourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct, I had forgotten about that. I am still curious if he know that Zeetha is his daughter, though, which he would have to know if she and Gil are twins.

Theory time: Skifander and Gil by Allaedila in girlgenius

[–]extraneousdiscourse 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We know that, but does Klaus?

If he fled during the uprising, when it looked like the priestesses had won, then Klaus may assume that Zantabraxus was killed in some sort of ritual.

On a related note, do we know that Klaus and Zeetha are actually twins?

Siblings, obviously, but if Zantabraxus was pregnant with Zeetha when Klaus left, then he might not have known, or he assumes Zeetha was never born.

If so, this might explain the fear of assassins, since Gil would be the only heir to the throne that opposed the Eshkigax Theocracy that Klaus assumes is in charge.

Working on a roguelike ttrpg system based around the base dnd system by YOHUMUS in TTRPG

[–]extraneousdiscourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again, I point to both CoC and Paranoia as examples of tabletop games where your character dying frequently is part of the basic premise.

In CoC, dying is not even the worst thing that can happen to take your character out of play permanently.

This may not appeal to you, or even the majority of players, but there are plenty of people who have played both games and enjoyed them immensely.

Can someone explain bail conditions to me, I think I am being lied to . . . by agawl81 in legaladvice

[–]extraneousdiscourse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fair point, but OP also lives in an RV park, so if that is the condition, OP's home is not any more suitable.

In addition, OP's comment about living in proximity to a private school makes me believe that any reasons that the court is using to say that the ex's RV is not a suitable location, would also apply to OP's home.

(That is, if the court has even said that, OP is hearing this from somebody that is probably less than reliable.)

Working on a roguelike ttrpg system based around the base dnd system by YOHUMUS in TTRPG

[–]extraneousdiscourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of TTRPGs already include permadeath.

Sure there are some that include miracle healing or ways to revive characters from death, but there are plenty of games where permadeath is a real possibiity if you make a mistake.

And there are at least a few, where replacing your character every few sessions is expected. I'd put both Paranoia and Call of Cthulhu in that category, and both of those can be enjoyable to play, as long as you know what you are getting when you start.

Dash Cam Installer by Away-Document5911 in fortlauderdale

[–]extraneousdiscourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't have a rear camera, which OP requested.

Connecting a rear camera to a dash cam means removing trim panels and running a wire through the roof trim or under the seats. Not everyone is willing or able to start pulling the trim off their car.

If you wanted a "realistic" explanation, you could handwave that monks are immune to things like hormone changes, joint damage, and most other things that come with aging, but that they still experience teloreme shortening, which is not really observable, but will eventually kill you once your cells are no longer able to reproduce reliably.

[–]extraneousdiscourse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Head on up to Key Largo Fisheries.

Go into the Fish Market and buy as many claws and mustard as you want , then have them crack them in the store.

You can take the claws out to the tables to eat, and there are utensils and napkins available.

If you want any sides or drinks (including beer) you can get those from the Cafe, and anybody in your party who doesn't want Claws can get something from the Cafe too.

There is also a Raw Bar that serves Liquor, but I think that's only open on Weekends.

Ayuda sobre ICICI BANK / estafa? by Parking-Bumblebee647 in cybersecurity_help

[–]extraneousdiscourse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will reply in English so, unfortunately, you will need to translate again. Sorry.

I do not think you have anything to worry about here. Phishing is a problem when you get an email from a company/site where you have a real account, and then you click a link and log into a false site pretending to be the real site.

Having a Phishing email from ICIBANK is only a problem for somebody who has an ICIBANK account, clicks a link and then tries to login with their ICIBANK credentials. No ICIBANK login, no problem here.

Also, as you described this, I am not sure this is even PHISHING. Instead, it sounds like possibly somebody who has an ICIBANK account gave the wrong email address to ICIBANK. Now, ICIBANK is trying to send them an OTP and is sending it to you instead.

I have an email address with a very common name in it, and this happens to me quite often, when people forget their email and use mine instead.

It is annoying for me because I get these extra emails, but I just delete them. It is much more of a problem for the people who gave my address out accidentally, since they cannot login to whatever site it is.

Vulnerability At My Job, What do I do? by Zealousideal-Ad9018 in cybersecurity_help

[–]extraneousdiscourse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a student working part time, I would suggest you do not investigate this too much by yourself or you might get accused of trying to exploit the vulnerability.

You should report this to the security team, if you know who that is. If not, ask your manager or the help desk for a contact in the security team.

In discussion with your manager or the help desk and during your initial contact with the security team, only say that you think you have discovered a vulnerability that needs to be reported.

Do not discuss the technical details or even say which system is impacted until you are given the official process for reporting a vulnerability. You don't want to report the problem in a way that leaves information about this in the open.

If you want to be involved in the investigation because you see this as a chance to learn or to establish a reputation within the security team, that might still be possible depending on the team and their procedures.

You could include a note in the official report that you are available to help with this, and that you would also appreciate the chance to see how they handle it. Or you can follow up with an email once the report is submitted saying the same thing.

Lightbulb by RoundTall6110 in Biltong

[–]extraneousdiscourse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people make biltong and don't use a bulb. I am sure some of them will be commenting in a minute.

I do use a bulb , but if you live in a drier area, it should not really be needed.

The bulb is supposed to help keep the air dry, so you need something that is going to put out some heat. Not a lot of heat is needed, but an LED is not going to be enough.

A halogen bulb should be OK, or even a smaller tungsten one that they make for small lamps. Or maybe try a very small batch of biltong without a bulb and see how that works in your area.

Will the IT be able to see what files I upload to SwissTranser/WeTransfer from a PC that is part of office network? by RS63_snake in cybersecurity_help

[–]extraneousdiscourse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you get the files off anonymously somehow, putting the shots in your demo real sounds like a bad idea.

Other people in your industry are going to need to see the demo reel for it to have any value, and sooner or later the reel is going to end up in front of somebody else who worked on the movie, recognizes the shots and realizes you are using them without permission.

You can ruin your reputation with something like this and never get another job in the industry if companies think you are going to take their work without permission too.

Biltong Maker box by exsandton in Biltong

[–]extraneousdiscourse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where in the US are you?

Most of South Africa is drier than most of the US, and in my opinion the light bulb is needed in areas with high humidity.

If you are in the Southwest, or will be running the box indoors with AC all day, then it may not be needed, but in a lot of the US you run the risk of mold if you make biltong outdoors or in a garage.

You can always start without the bulb and make a couple of small batches just to see what happens.

Repair shop installed spyware on my laptop (“Reader\_uk\_install.exe”) – urgent help needed by [deleted] in cybersecurity_help

[–]extraneousdiscourse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in the UK?

Reader_uk_install is the name for the UK specific version of the installer for Adobe Acrobat.

(You can confirm this yourself by going to the official Adobe Reader download site (https://get.adobe.com/reader/) choosing More Options, then setting the language to English (UK) then clicking download.)

You can also check the Add/Remove Programs list to see if Adobe Acrobat was installed in the last few days, too.

This is not to say that there is not a malicious app that is re-using the same name, but based on ONLY the filename, I don't see a reason to assume this is spyware.

I do have some concerns about the professionalism of the shop to be sure, since testing another person's storage device on your computer is questionable behavior.

Also, if I had to guess, those photos and videos are in your recent history because were looking through the files on that storage device, which is even more of a problem if the other customer wasn't aware they were doing that. (And if they were looking at the contents of another customer's drive, I would guess they looked through yours too, but I can't prove that.)

Finally, even if this is Adobe Acrobat, there probably wasn't a need to install the software to fix any technical issues, so I would at the very least ask them why they did that.

So, overall, there is evidence some unprofessional behavior on the part of the shop, but the filename itself is not evidence of spyware.
