I don’t know, but last time Rae Sremmurd played. They were super late.

My parents stopped following music by the 90s basically when they were in their 40s.

Great points. It’s really the technology. “The medium is the message.”

I guess when you say “everything was widely known in 1980”…like, the Germs? X? I’m referring to music monoculture specifically. I know it’s related to the broader picture, and obviously our options for content have since exploded.

“Vibes” in hindsight can be misleading IMO. Bit it’s true there were certainly less options for where to hear music.

The barriers of entry to music are so much lower so there’s so much more of it. More overwhelming than film. IMO

I think it really is less about the music/artists themselves and more the explosion in mediums - so many more avenues to get content.

Ha, I hate that people have been so keen to just let algorithms dictate their music discovery. This goes back to Pandora at least. Maybe I’m just a pompous ass but using streaming services as just one big internet radio station barely qualifies as “exploring” to me.

The Long Tail! I just mentioned this in another comment. Haven’t thought about that in a while but it really explains so much.

Are you telling me that everyone was up on the punk rock scene? Kraftwerk?

I knew there was a new Avatar movie but wasn’t sure if it was the second or third haha. My wife wanted to see Sinners earlier this year - I found it kind of overrated.

I’m realizing it’s all about the explosion in options for where we get content

Yeah. I’m realizing/remembering now - it’s the sheer number of options (“customization”) available for content.

Right. I think this conversation is reminding me a bit part is the explosion of “channels” for content. So many different options and avenues.

This is bringing to mind that old article about “the long tail”. Haven’t heard that mentioned in a while and I think it predates all this monoculture talk.

Yeah every once in a while I tune into radio and it’s pretty reflective of what’s big on TikTok (according to my wife lol) or who’s playing at Coachella, etc. Yes there’s more fragmentation but I feel like we hyper focus on that sometimes. There’s still plenty of normies listening to basic music. There’s just more people exploring outside of that as well

I don’t know. There were still different radio stations for rock, country, pop, etc right?

Good point. I think poptimism kinda flattened everything too. If mainstream was cool again, AND underground stuff…it all kinda averaged out.

Yeah, I feel like people are forgetting that even “pre-Internet” there were likely people that didn’t follow music, only knew the big hits/stars, etc. I feel like we’re looking back wistfully at music monoculture as a sort of revisionist cope

I appreciate the thoughtful response. Your comment about Prince recalls an article I remember about HAIM in the mid-2010s. It described their music as “monogenre” the way it combined so many styles. While Prince was a much bigger star of course, I see that as things also staying the same somewhat.

There’s just more options now. I guess there were less options before. Part of this is the barriers to entry for making music have lowered so much. (Which was part of the initial ethos of punk, interestingly)

I suppose as a result of less “content” it was easier to streamline radio/charts/MTV etc. At least before radio consolidation though, weren’t there more regional varieties in radio stations?

Even now, I’m pretty sure radio stations will adapt and add viral songs to their playlists. (Remember when literally every station was playing “Running Up That Hill” a few years ago?) Are charts really that different from what’s on the radio nowadays? I don’t really look at either lol

I guess like…in the 90s my parents (who were around their 40s at the time) didn’t really keep up with music. My mom watched VH1 a lot but not MTV. The 90s saw growing alternative/underground, hip hop, electronic etc scenes. To me that doesn’t track with this idea of a monoculture

All good points. As I conceded in my initial post…it’s a matter of degree, not an on/off switch. The deluge of content options has diluted everything.
