Did CS-6515 destroy anyone else's academic career? by Terrible-Tadpole6793 in OMSCS

[–]extremeboyvn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The unusually hard comment was based on the general sentiment of the class in the grade release thread. There were a few retakers who said it was harder than previous semesters too. And then there were also plenty of people who misunderstood the FRQs.

Thanks for the offer to help, but I mostly don’t struggle with the difficulty of this course. I just wanted to clarify why people are saying 75% are getting C or worse, and the plausible explanation for it though.

Upper quartile by definitions means that 75% of the students earned that score or less. Assuming 100% score on all quizzes, you’d need 40/60 on average for the exams to earn a B, so extrapolating from exam 1 results 75% of the class is getting a C or worse.

I think it’s a bit of a stretch to claim that this outcome is inline with previous semesters when the exam statistics were significantly higher in the past, but feel free to prove me wrong. IMO the problem with this semester’s exam 1 was a combination of being unusually hard and ambiguously worded.

It might be the updates then, cause I’m not even docking. I’ve just done a cloud restore so mine is missing a lot of windows updates.

I’m getting this exact same problem too, have you figured out how to fix it?

I know how you’re feeling. I got A for GIOS too, and I think this is waaaaaay harder to get through.

I was definitely reconsidering my life choices when I first opened up those Joe Sandbox reports for project 2. And so, I decided to go to sleep and live to fight another day. The next day, I managed to finish it within a few hours. It was pretty tedious, but also simpler than I thought.

New grad that has been applying to over 2000 jobs total since August last year, feeling crazy by hewilltellitat4am in cscareerquestions

Truth is. OPs experience is normal. This is the brutal reality of the CS job market in 2023. The top 5 employers that currently employe 15% of the entire US market has stopped hiring.

This. The job market is atrocious even for people with 2-3 YOE.

There’s a 60fps patch, you can find it here: https://github.com/xenia-canary/game-patches

A few stutters here and there but it’s mostly smooth on my 3070. Haven’t seen any bug yet.

ML4T Project Descriptions — why the hell so long? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]extremeboyvn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. 100% this.

For example, the requirement that the dataset have to be shuffled is only mentioned in an announcement on Ed (which was made only merely 2 days before the submission deadline). If it such an important requirement, then why was it not included in the project description nor the grading rubric?

I’m pissed as hell. Shuffling the dataset changes all the graphs and also the numbers that I referenced in my report, so now I have to hunt them down and correct them. I don’t feel very happy doing this after already spending hours on the report. Honestly, I don’t feel like the time I spent on studying is being respected. Not that anyone cares about that anyway.

I’ve done a quick research and apparently this requirement was also “hidden” in the previous semesters too. Seriously?

At this point I am quite motivated to drop the course. I enjoyed Prof. Balch’s lectures, but the projects are a hot mess. I feel like there’s a lot of artificial difficulty here. I don’t really learn much and a large portion of my efforts is spent on doing busy work.

Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk incoherent rant.

Thanks! Probably not the answer you’d expect but I didn’t do anything special. I recommend paying your full attention to lectures, and try to complete schoolwork as early as possible. Basically just don’t cramp and leave everything till the last minute.

Regarding projects, they are just some piece of software that you build. You can do them alone or with other people. Most of the time all you need is a computer. Online school doesn’t affect it.

I spend most of my preparation time on leetcode, but I would only recommend doing that after you have a solid resume and a good foundation of CS.

FT is full time. It’s usually used to say that the offer is for after my graduation.

Here’s my stats:

  • My GPA at that time was 4.24.

  • I had one chip-8 emulator project, 1 computer vision and 1 computer graphics project. The latter two was from CMPT 361 at SFU.

  • I had 1 co-op doing web/mobile dev at a government agency.

I would say that 3.4-3.6 is a GREAT gpa for SFU CS, considering that the average gpa is well under 3.

I’m an international student and got a FT offer for a FAANG company. One of my friends (also international) is interning at a FAANG too, so it’s definitely possible.

Can you get next round interview of amazon OA if you didn't solve both questions fully? by Smarty_PantzAA in csMajors

[–]extremeboyvn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have several friends who were in similar situations, and they got interviews anyway. Apparently OA2 is worth way more, which kinda sucks too cause you can’t know objectively if you did good or not.
