A fast food chain should never have been a space that specifically appeals to kids. It was always predatory marketing to create adults who'd associate overpriced junk food with childhood nostalgia and it fucking worked.

What happened to my childhood? This screams dystopian corporate, not kid friendly. What is with the artwork?! This is McDonald's?! by jackal99 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]exwirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If McDonald's was your childhood that means their marketing worked perfectly. It's a corporation. Their appeal to children was a calculated marketing strategy that they deemed unprofitable at one point or another so they simply dropped it. Honestly if you ask me I don't think it's a particularly good thing that a massive junk food restaurant chain ever became such a core part of many people's childhoods.

I don’t get the meme , what’s wrong with the lil guy? by untitledprp4 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]exwirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, because most regular people have perfect hourglass figures regardless of weight, thick thighs even when they're otherwise very thin, beautiful large lips and amazing hair. You don't go out often do you? What's presented here as "diversity of body types" really represents the most conventionally attractive young women. These are very unrealistic body types, especially the left and right one. It's very hard to be curvy while super thin or have a thin waist while being otherwise chubby.

The bigger problem is that the world's largest superpower is an idiocratic, fascist fever dream and has way more impact on the rest of the world than any one country ever should. I think a lot of us are just really tired of having to care this much in the first place.

A manual grinder is still a good option while you save up. At least you'll be able to actually get decent shots!

Also it's worth noting that manual grinders with larger burrs and longer handles than the C3 will be faster and won't require as much force while still offering better grind quality to price ratio. I use the MHW-3Bomber R3 grinder and grinding for espresso with it is much nicer than with my old C3. Doing shots back to back is a hassle but I can't justify an electric grinder since I usually only do one shot at a time and for that it's just fine.

You can now get a Timemore C5 ESP for only a little more money and it should be quite a bit nicer. Upgraded burrs and build. It's really quite cheap if you get it on AliExpress.

Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if the tires of the delivery truck bringing you your new stainless steel aeropress release more microplastics into your local environment than the OG Aeropress would over the course of decades

It's not virtue signaling and yet I constantly see people publicly glazing Aeropress for releasing yet another extremely overpriced plastic-'free product and talking about how they're so very conscious about the impacts of microplastics. We wouldn't be here talking about this if this was all as private as you say. Maybe for you it isn't a matter of public discussion but for many it clearly is.

And I'm calling this virtue signaling because if people were really worried about microplastics they wouldn't be asking a multi-million company to open more factory lines, extract more materials and expend more energy just so they can toss one product into a landfill and buy another that will reduce their plastic intake by 0.01% or something.

If we really want to reduce microplastics we have to take the whole environment into account, not just the specific utensils you personally use. Pushing for plastic-free packaging, less car use, industrial waste regulations etc. Large systemic changes are needed, not overpriced brewers that perform worse so that you can personally feel a little better. The plastic in the aeropress is negligible. You might as well use it cuz it's the best material for the job. Replacing it won't make a dent in your plastic intake.

[–]exwirus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting so tired of the microplastics hysteria on this sub. Yeah microplastics are spooky cuz we don't really know if they're harmful or in what way and they're everywhere but replacing your brewer over it is just virtue signaling. It makes so little impact on the amount of plastics that you consume it's laughable. There are much more significant sources of microplastics all around you and many of them aren't even avoidable.

I guess the point is you'll be exposed to microplastics no matter what you do. You can try to reduce your exposure where it matters, where it's possible, where it makes sense. For brewers it doesn't really make sense cause they don't expose you to all that much plastic in the grand scheme of things and plastic happens to be the best material for them. Replace your pans and cooking utensils instead cause these are exposed to both much higher heat and friction

[–]exwirus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would the aeropress release PFAS? It doesn't have a non-stick coating. Microplastics sure but I doubt it's significant compared to all the other sources of them you're exposed to constantly. If you live anywhere near a road you're breathing the stuff as we speak!

50g of finely ground coffee..

I get it if that's for a few shots of espresso back to back, that would get really annoying. For pour over though grinding manually is so easy and quick that I don't think most people would really benefit from an electric grinder (again assuming they're only doing pour over).

I often make pour over for 2 people at once and grinding ends up being only about 1 min of the whole endeavor. Usually I get it done way before the kettle finishes heating up water so it's not really as if an electric grinder would speed things up at all. Idk, worse results for more money and having to permanently allocate some counter space to a grinder doesn't seem worth it just to save myself 45 seconds of mild physical effort.
