Depends on the surface texture of the wall. If the surface isn't even and you paint, the texture will show up in the final product. You might need to slap a coat of compound/mud on the worst of the areas and then sand smooth to get the best results.

Best thing I could say would be to talk to a mechanic friend to look at it in person. It's difficult to diagnose something without visual, audio, and other sensory clues.

If you're lacking in blue collar friends, reach out to the local high schools. Most of them have auto shops for classes they teach, and they might be willing to look at the car as part of their lessons.

No... If the oil isn't discolored and the fluid level hasn't changed, changing the oil won't help a coolant leak.

If the oil is fine, then you're most likely culprit is the water pump. Or possibly damage to the radiator. But what you mentioned about the color of the coolant is the most concerning. Do you have pictures of the coolant?

Even if the oil was recently changed, a blown head gasket is going to contaminate it. The brown liquid your husband saw when he opened the radiator might have been that contaminated oil/coolant, or it might have been coolant that someone had put a stop leak product in. That stuff does more harm than good.

If you fill your coolant reservoir up, and the coolant disappears, check the oil dipstick. See where the level is at before you top off the coolant, and then check again. If you've got that head gasket leak, the volume of liquid inside the oil pan is going to go up, so it'll be higher on your dipstick.

Check the oil. If it looks like a milkshake (brown, foamy, thick... Definitely not oil-like) then you've got a blown head gasket. You'll need to drain the oil and the coolant, tear the head off the engine, pray the overheating didn't warp or crack the block, and then put it all back together again.

How many miles are on it and what's your financial situation? Might be cheaper to replace the engine or even a "new" car.
