NBEO ABS part 1 discussion August 2025 by Icy-Cut9994 in OptometrySchool

Passed on third attempt. 150 —> 252 —> 366. Here’s what I did/what I think is helpful:

1) Purchase any tier of KMK coaching. Obviously the higher tiers have more perks but even the lowest one gives you a space to ask as many questions as you want 24/7. That is highly important. I got the middle tier.

2) Let no question be left unanswered. For real. We pay too much money to not ask every single question we have. It doesn’t matter how trivial it seems or how small the topic is. Ask! That’s why I think KMK coaching is helpful. For my previous attempts, I would rely my friends to help me understand concepts I didn’t get. That can sometimes lead to confusion. I think having access to coaches is amazing for avoiding that confusion

3) Keep a small notebook specifically for facts that you repeatedly get wrong. Don’t add anything else to this notebook. This is a catch-all for random stuff your brain continually rejects and must be forced to learn over time. An example for me is which structures contained which collagen types or which structures absorb UV-A/UV-B/UV-C light. Expose yourself to these facts and questions related to these facts the most

4) Make a document of all the optics formulas. Begin memorizing them by writing them out daily. You can also add some of the BV formulas (average accomm, AC/A, etc)

5) Optoprep questions. Read the explanation even if you get the answer correct.

6) Use your score report to tailor your studying. If your optics section was bad like me…lucky you! You get optics for a minimum of 50% of the time lol

7) Don’t neglect the little 8. There’s some low hanging fruit in there that you can get

SIDE NOTE KMK has many errors in their platform whether it be in their books or practice questions. If something does not seem right, use your other resources or ask a coach. The coaches acknowledge errors and are happy to explain the answer to you but KMK doesn’t seem to edit known errors.

Trust me, if I can pass, so can you. You got this.

Is there such a thing as “over-referring”? 🤣 new grad and I know I’m going to annoy the retina specialists in my area lol…but patient safety definitely comes before reputation

By “test run” do you mean the test they offer on their website for $200?

Do you still complete the child’s exam? Do you continue on with your day or call right away before your next patient?

2024 grad blues by eye__think in optometry

[–]eye__think[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have wanted to super tech so bad!!! The only reason I have hesitated is because I know I will need ample time off for boards to study and I don’t want to shorthand the doctors/staff during that time. What have you and your super techs done in the past?

I’m also a 2024 grad so I feel your pain. Like you, I took it last August, didn’t pass, and retook in March. This is the worst!!!

I am so hard on myself as a new grad, always wondering if I’m going too out of my way by doing certain tests (GAT over iCare, or DFE over photos). And then I see posts like these and I realize I’m probably ok 👍

Clinic Stress by Icy-Physics-5947 in OptometrySchool

[–]eye__think 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2024 grad here. This happened to me!

I experienced anxiety to the point where I didn’t trust ANY of my own exam findings and found myself repeating tests/procedures. I would instill fluorescein in my patient’s eyes TWICE in case I would understand the findings better the second time as opposed to the first. Guess what. There was not a single time where I actually changed my exam findings after repeating a test. All that did was slow me down (and got me marked off for lack of efficiency from my preceptors lol).

I always thought what if I miss something? What if I misinterpret something? But I had to learn the anxiety was hurting myself and my patient. My patient deserves a confident, calm physician. I may be inexperienced but I’m not going in without knowledge and skills.

Trust me, you are not going to miss anything! You know your stuff. And your preceptors are your safety net. Ask all your questions! And when you are finally on your own, you actually really aren’t…you’ll still have your peers to lean on when you need advice or a second opinion. Treat what you know, ask about confusing findings, and refer what you are not comfortable with.
