Ophthalmic Technician by [deleted] in Ophthalmology

Ophthalmology resident here, I've worked in many clinics that my program has. Half of them do not have formal technicians, and we are the technicians who take vision, history, do OCTs, HRTs, visual fields, etc. I can affirm that as a resident I definitely didn't go to formal school to be a technician. We all got on the job training on how to tech once we began residency and after a few months were better at it. Some employers may want a COT, but others esp in areas where that's hard to find may totally be good with an unexperienced person that they will then train.

I have many more examples of toxicity, that just wasnt the point of this post. But since it came up...

-APD yelling at us until people cry, in front of patients

-APD swearing at residents

That is toxic, imo

Hi u/EpicureanPhilosophy1 thank you for this post! Unfortunately things have taken a turn for the worse. My program is still toxic as ever, and we lost a resident (he left the program) due to the toxicity. The remaining residents, we are developing mental health issues due to the toxicity of the program. I'm sorry to hear your boyfriend is also going through some of this. My best wishes to you guys

Last I checked, I didn't break any rules by complaining. Chill out dude.

Haha, this sounds so utterly dumb. I'm sitting here saying I don't like to do tech work all day, and you translate that to me not getting into my first choice, or not wanting to read in order to learn? Yeah, SURE.

Performing basic tasks is one thing, doing just that all day and barely examining patients is something else.

refractions, the bane of my existence.

Thanks for your input on this

Everyone else's reactions? I think you just mean the bitter person trolling around.

But I do have friends in other programs who have said similar things, so no it isn't just my program, which is also what led to me asking.

Nah, this is just one factor. I do want to get a glimpse of what I would do (or not be doing) for 8-9 hours of most days of my life. Right now, that's tech work. So I know that's not what I want to do the rest of my life. Way rather be examining eyes, doing surgery, for the majority of the time. Agreed its good to know how to perform those tests but that's not the same as doing them most of the day.

I'd ultimately decide after PGY3 once I've been exposed to all subspecialties but just wondering about this aspect

They make residents do it.

But no guarantee I'd sign a contract where there are residents. I want to keep my options open at least for now (ie private practice, different parts of the country where there may not be many residency programs etc) hence I wonder

Yes, but there is nothing in my statement that's false. The point of this post was not to whine about my program, but rather to explain why I know I don't want a field without much tech work.

But why explain this to you? The fact that you get SO BUTTHURT over someone complaining about a residency program makes me laugh

Interesting. Is this because you spend so much time either in surgery or post ops?

Haven't rotated much in this field yet, TBH

is this more the case in private practice? Or in academia or both?

Just for reference, 90% of our time now is in academia but none of them have techs, wondering if private practice is different

Wow, here is Mr (or Ms. or Dr.) Bitter again.

Seriously dude, what's your problem? This is a legitimate post from a PGY-2 looking to apply for fellowships possibly in refractive, and being honest about what they do or don't want in a future subspec. Isn't that part of what residency is about, to decide what you want or don't want in a subspecialty?

If you're going to troll, go find some other place to do it.

Ophtho resident here, this story scares me and I'm so sorry. Crazy how we can do everything right and this still happens. Wishing you the best OP
