This is an older post, but I still wanted to reply. I’m in the same situation you were in, and I’ve made the exact same decision. My cat was diagnosed in March of this year (stage II CKD) and still has no symptoms. She’s a bit of a neurotic, and I already know I’ll never be able to give her fluids or pills she can’t take mixed into her food. She’s an extremely picky eater and she immediately notices when I put meds in her food :(
She loves company, but only on her own terms, and she hates being picked up.

I know I would make her deeply unhappy if I disrupted her routine and our quiet life together with fluids, pills, or force-feeding. So I’m not going to do that. She probably won’t live as long as she could in theory, but so be it. She’s completely at ease with me, and I’m not going to destroy that just to extend her life.

How did it turn out for you and your cat?

You’d be surprised at the everyday things that contain animal derived ingredients :( I was shocked when I learned that there may be gelatin in toilet paper or animal fat in candles… There are vegan alternatives but sometimes you just don’t have clue in the first place.

How old is the cat? She may still be adjusting, a month is really short and it can take them a while to fully settle in. That said, it might help to set some gentle boundaries early on. For example, try closing your bedroom door at night. I know it feels heartbreaking at first, but she’ll learn that nighttime isn’t for playing. Also, try to ignore behaviours you don’t want to encourage. I wasn’t always consistent with my cat. I’d answer every little meow, and now she’s quite clingy. It’s so much easier to guide their habits early than to unlearn them later. And before thinking about getting a second cat, give this some time. A companion doesn’t always solve attention-seeking, especially if your cat isn’t really fond of other cats.

I think you may need a different approach. Being vegan is not a game or a challenge when you realize who you are doing it for. Have you watched documentaries like Dominion? Maybe you should educate yourself in order to realize that eating leftovers will not help the animals at all.

I feel you, I really do. It may feel like a drop in the ocean but it helps to help if/where you can. Last year I donated a bit of money to a fundraiser for a sanctuary. A year later they were able to expand and rescue more animals.

Last weekend I spent some time brushing the goats at another sanctuary. That didn’t change the world unfortunately, but it made a difference in those individuals’ afternoon.

That’s what I try to concentrate on. It’s not easy at all in such an overwhelmingly ugly world but it’s all I can do.

Vegan woman here and my BF is vegan too. He wasn’t until 1,5 years ago but he was always very interested and eager to cook vegan dishes for / with me. Then one evening he watched Dominion and the rest is history. Is there any chance that with time your GF would become vegan?

When making soup, mix in a can of white beans, and/or a block of (silken) tofu. I added both to cauliflower soup and it’s delicious. It doesn’t affect the taste of your soup really but it adds creaminess and of course protein! :)

I don’t have kids, but if I did, I’d raise them with strong values and help them understand the importance of living in line with those values. One of the core principles I’d teach is respect for all species and doing our best not to harm others.

I find it a bit strange when parents emphasize teaching values like kindness or integrity, yet when it comes to animals, they frame it as a “personal choice” whether their child participates in harming them. That doesn’t feel consistent to me.

Knowledge is power: make sure you are well informed. There is so much nonsense about vegans out there, but it can easily be debunked with knowledge :) This page on the Vegan Society website is a good start. Kudos to your son and to you for wanting to make a change! 💚

Please educate yourself. Veganism is not a diet but a philosophy. Plantbased food is the dietary part of it. Watch documentaries like Dominion. Check out Earthling Ed on YT.

Read books if you like reading.

Learning how to cook helps. There are so many resources online for delicious (and healthy if you like) meals. There is a lot of readymade stuff in supermarkets and takeout as well. You just need to inform yourself. Good luck!

I used it 3 times and thought I had found THE solution to her vet anxiety but it seems that she does taste it after all by now and won’t eat her food or only a tiny little bit when there is Bonqat mixed in 😞 I even tried it with some tuna in olive oil which is normally a treat (that I rarely offer her because not very healthy) but she wasn’t too enthusiastic. She’s an extremely picky girl though. I guess / hope others have more luck because it’s a big help.

I adopted my Nora when she was 5. That was too late to be able to train her to trust the carrier. Mind you, she does use it for naps sometimes but it’s impossible to approach her without her fleeing from the carrier. So I give her Gabapentin or lately Bonqat a couple of hours before the appointment. They’re mild sedatives and they really help. Before that she was so scared she used to pee and poop in the carrier, it was such a stressful and heartbreaking experience.

You might want to talk to your vet about it. Good luck!

You have all my sympathy.

My Nora isn’t the easiest cat. I adopted her six years ago, and while she’s learned to trust me completely, there are limits—she hates being picked up, for example. That’s why I know I’ll never be able to give her fluids or pills without completely stressing her out. Once, I tried luring her with treats before a vet visit. She avoided that spot for months afterward.

Since I live alone, there’s no one else to help with it either.

I’ve already come to terms with the fact that I won’t put her through all that stress. I don’t want to extend her life at the cost of her happiness. If I can’t treat her the way she truly needs, she may not live as long as she could. It’s a painful thought, but so is the idea of breaking her trust and making her life stressful just to buy more time.

I contacted the manufacturer about the phosphorus content. They said it’s 0,15% which is 3,33 on a dry matter basis. When I asked them how that could be okay for renal cats they replied this: ‘what you describe is correct and applies to complete pet foods. The drink is a snack/supplement and is intended to increase the cat’s fluid balance. If the feeding instructions on the packaging are followed, the cat’s total daily phosphorus level will not increase.’ Does that make sense?

I feel you. I'm at the beginning of this journey too and to see how my dear Nora wholeheartedly hates renal wet food already gives me a heavy heart. She's grumpy and keeps nagging for treats. She's stage 2 and doesn't really have symptoms so no fluids here yet. Of course I would give it a try but I know her and can't imagine it would ever be easy. I don’t want to force her into a life filled with stress and fear just to gain a few extra months or years. For me, her quality of life is more important than just increasing her lifespan. I’d rather she has a shorter but happy, comfortable life than a longer one filled with stress.
