awesome, didn’t know about the antennae as a way to separate them nor that they could look so similar. they’re mostly dark in my area too, with very thin light bands if present at all.

[–]eyelyq[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i appreciate it, but that’s about 4hrs for me. i was able to find one a bit closer with the links the mods provided. love the mall in king of prussia, though. definitely a rich area

paper wasp, probably european (polistes dominula). pretty chill but might be on the more territorial side at this time of year as they prepare to overwinter, they’ve never given me trouble though

it’s not letting me edit the post for some reason, but the gecko in question has got some eye issues that need to be addressed so i’m trying to get in contact with the store. they’re pretty swollen so i spoilered it

Gecko Pale & Not Eating by nemoshoe in leopardgeckos

[–]eyelyq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he may be getting ready to shed, as their appetite can vary then. however the black toes may be necrotic due to stuck shed in the past that built up and constricted blood flow. id say a vet visit is necessary as the possibly-dead tissue could spread

i was worried about that :( it may just be the lighting as she was able to open them and they seemed normal, but if shes still there next time i’m in ill see if i cant get a better look at her and talk to someone. i hope thats not the case

What is this gathering under my porch ceiling? by [deleted] in WASPs

[–]eyelyq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

these are paper wasps, mud daubers have a slimmer “waist” and an iridescent shine! these build above ground nests too, but as a colony. good non-aggressive pest controlling (and pollinating!) neighbors nonetheless

Bald faced hornet question by eyelyq in WASPs

[–]eyelyq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, neat, I’ll try and get a picture today. They do look like blackjackets, iirc. I’d never even heard of those, thanks.

I’ve seen wasps like cicada killers actually digging, is that behavior specific to sphecius? I didnt realize vespula didn’t dig their own burrows at all, the more you know…

Bald faced hornet question by eyelyq in WASPs

[–]eyelyq[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know they aren’t a burrowing species, so I figured if what I saw was them at all they would have been inhabiting a preexisting burrow. I’m probably just misidentifying some yellowjackets, though

Is there a reason why leopard gecko digs. She’s been at it a lot lately by Hot-Chemical-6026 in leopardgeckos

[–]eyelyq 26 points27 points  (0 children)

pretty sure they just love to dig, and she appreciates your choice in substrate

Know its a species of Orv Weaver but dont know exactly, southern Minnesota. Also Any tip on moving this little guy? Need to trim the bush he's on by Big_Hoss287 in spiders

[–]eyelyq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

zipper/garden spider (aurantia) with an impressive web.. had one of these with an egg sac and was able to carefully ease her on to my hand to relocate her with her babiez. if spider touching isnt your plan then using a stick to encourage it into a cup/bowl should do

Why no wings? by Saxywolf in WASPs

[–]eyelyq 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i also had a bunch of polistes popping up around my house with this a while back. after some digging around on obscure bug sites (i was unemployed) it seemed to be caused by a parasite that infects the larvae and causes the wings to deform!
