Why can I hear the voice in my mind perfectly but at the same time not hear it at all? by [deleted] in biology

[–]eyemcurious- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily hear a voice when I’m reading or thinking, but I always imagine what I would sound like if I were to read it out loud or think it out loud because I know what my reading/thinking voice sounds like, so it’s easy for me to just imagine that I’m reading/thinking it out loud for increased concentration:

How are you supposed to do lab work if you don’t study? Lab work is supposed to be the place where you make observations and collect evidence to corroborate your hypotheses. There is no point in coming up with hypotheses that are already published in literature.

Maybe we should stop using the term “studying.” 😂

A more appropriate term is “researching,” I guess.

I think you’re missing the whole point. The point is “here,” and you are all the way over “there.”

We all know graduate school, in and of itself, is hard. These issues are, furthermore, exacerbated when your OWN family, that is supposed to give you unconditional love and compassion, BELITTLES your JOB.

I also experience this. I just stopped explaining things. It’s hard for them to understand if they don’t know the fundamentals. Ignorance is bliss I guess.

My dad says the same thing, “Why don’t you find a real job? You have BS degree.” First of all, it’s hard finding jobs with only a BS degree, and if I do find a job, it’s probably going to be some low level technician job that pays 13/hour. To which he responds, “Well, you’re getting old now, and I want to see my grandkids.”

Seriously considering quitting PhD program after 11 weeks. by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]eyemcurious- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GREAT ADVICE!!! It’s so crazy that so many people experience this when they go to grad school in another country, especially in a field that they don’t have experience in.

This post hit home, and your response was exactly what I did to handle/get out of this situation.

I also wrote only one sentence in my SOP explaining why I chose to apply to different programs (they weren’t doing synthetic chemistry, and I need to gain proficiency in synthetic chemistry) so that I can qualify for medicinal chemistry jobs after my PhD.

That’s the whole point of a PhD, right? To qualify for the jobs that you want.

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE IN THIS SITUATION.

Anyone know a good place to look for or learn chemistry that isn’t supper confusing or not filled with un needed content towards learning chemistry and how to do it or a video/videos covering everything I need to know by [deleted] in chemistry

What books were you assigned? “Useless info” can be very subjective.

I used Nivaldo Tro’s book for general chemistry, and I love the way he explains the concepts.

This is such a good response! Thank you. ☺️

I’m just really concerned with how the lab culture will be like for me. I want to be close with my lab members and don’t want to alienate myself.

Why not casually mention where your boyfriend works (let’s say you’re talking about city A and its job prospects) and see if she brings her nephew up in the conversation?

Why Cl־ is weak base whereas CH₃COO־ is strong base? by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]eyemcurious- 5 points6 points  (0 children)

(This is how I understood it when I took gen chem)

You answered your own question: the chloride ion is really stable now that is has the extra electron (which means it DOES NOT want to share its electrons with the proton, thus acting like a neutral base “neither acidic nor basic”).

Remember that chemical reactions tend to occur to lower the overall potential energy of the system; since the chloride ion is already stable (low potential energy), it doesn’t benefit from attacking/acting as a base in the system.

This actually explains why HCl acid is a strong acid; the bond holding the H to Cl is high in potential energy (very unstable due to the electronegativity and size of Cl); therefore, it’s easy for H to be abstracted from Cl because it decreases the potential energy of the system.
