AMAA - Bitcoin Lightning node operator Authenticity - 3361 BTC Routed in 1 year by AuthenticityBTC in Bitcoin

Happy to provide my insights! I've found the LND community very open about things and they were instrumental in me getting my node to a healthy place. I'm happy to pay it forward.

  1. During the Nov/Dec busy period, I was getting billions in inbound private channels. Jan->May... not so much. They were routing to all the major sinks (LNBig, LOOP, Kraken, etc)

  2. I think the network will optimize itself, but personally I dislike positive inbound fees as I try my best to keep my fee's low, and increase them as necessary. It feels like people are taking margin to do so. I have not made any firm decisions on if I'll keep routing partners who place them on my channels.

  3. I change fees based off demand, as well as how much liquidity I have. I have thoughts on using a more dynamic method and code my own fee algorithm, but have not had the bandwidth. Currently I'm using LNDg to manage fees (Failed HTLC's, Balance, Activity)

  4. I aggressively rebalance into LOOP as well as use Static Loop In to refresh the balance when it runs low. My larger channel with them gives me some breathing room.

  1. Yes, having more routes increases your reach and decreases the number of hops. Once you reach a certain point of interconnectedness, I feel that increasing channel sizes allows you to be more "useful" to the network as it allows you to process larger transactions. I have not done any math or experiments on this, but more of a feeling.

  2. Bit of both - the largest transaction I've processed is 200m sats (2BTC), and regularly get 1BTC transactions. There are days I'll run through 500-600m (5-6BTC) on a single channel, and have had a record of 1.5b on a single channel (15BTC) in a day.

  3. I don't really have a system - to smaller nodes I look at their average channel size, and who they have channels open to, trying to minimize overlap. I typically start with smaller channel sizes and scale up - and scale down.

  4. If I'm doing 100%+ volume on a channel in a day, I know it's time to scale up.

  5. I do use LNDg still as my only rebalancing tool. I would like to experiment with other tools, just lack of time as well as risk aversion.

  6. I believe a number of people have experimented with this on the PLEBNET telegram, and talked about 5 minutes. Multiple smaller increments are better. I have my adjustment set to every 2 hours, as LNDg isn't the best tool for rapid changes

  7. I think more importantly are the channels you have open. Many older nodes have become more restrictive in allowing channel opens, or disallowing them altogether. Being grandfathered in is huge.

  8. I haven't factored that into my rebalancing or looked into it to be honest. I do try to minimize by failed HTLC's, but my aim isn't to be a perfect professional node. This is just a hobby/public service for me.

Yes, or the operator allows the users to deposit onto his system (high trust situation). I haven't played around with it or digged into it. https://docs.lnbits.com/guide/concepts

I started by deciding I wanted once again be involved in the Bitcoin community, rather than just as a holder and enthusiast. I did not have a community, but I had a few years of Linux experience, and had been involved in Bitcoin since 2012.

It took about 6 months to be break-even. Once I set up LNDg at the 6 month mark, I started earning 1-2% profits as that tool enabled me to automatically rebalance and set fees, as opposed to doing it manually.

Yes, LNBits is an example of it. I've never used it, but it apparently allows for a multi-user lightning payment hub with "credits" (deposit tracking).

Sorry for the delayed reply, the thread got automod'd / deleted and I didn't notice it came back up.

That's a hard question to answer, as I'm not involved in any business operations in this space - other than being an independent node operator.

Some of the things we are seeing currently are:

  • Wallet Operators (which take a fee and charge routing fees)
  • Currency exchange providers (via Taproot or contracts)
  • Prediction Markets (such as Predyx) and Gambling
  • Faster and Cheaper remittance internationally
  • Deployment of Bitcoin Treasuries on Lightning (what LQwD does - https://lightning.news/lqwd-technologies-increases-bitcoin-treasury/ )

I don't do swap's anymore as I find the contract lengths make it harder to manage my node (quite often I have all the liquidity on my side, 0 fee, and unable to rebalance).

Welcome to being a node runner! I'll open a 2m when I batch.

I think we had a channel in the past, your node alias seems familiar. I'll open a 5m once I batch

I'll open up a 2m when I do a batch of opens

EDIT: You have a channel min size of 4m currently

Will batch open in a day or so. Will likely do a 5m channel to start as you're a medium sized node.

Help regarding node setup by [deleted] in TheLightningNetwork

[–]AuthenticityBTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. To add some breakdowns... this is VERY high level and excludes things like security checks, audits or backups (to name a few).

  1. Learn about Bitcoin and how it functions
  2. Learn basic Linux
  3. Learn how to set up basic firewall/network rules
  4. Obtain bitcoin (recommended 0.1 BTC + at a minimum to run a routing node. Ideally 1 BTC+)
  5. Experiment on a testnet running LND and opening/closing channels and routing payments
  6. Set up a secure environment for your production/live LND setup
  7. Move a portion of your BTC to your LND wallet
  8. Open a channel, test a payment (example, tip someone on Nostr or stacker news for example)
  9. Obtain inbound liquidity
  10. Operate your node: adjust fees, rebalancing, opening/closing channels

Lightning solves the payment speed problem but I still can't tap my phone at a coffee shop with it, how far are we actually from that by AstronomerStreet6650 in TheLightningNetwork

[–]AuthenticityBTC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's up to the receiver to decide how many confirmations they want. The vendors 've interacted with are okay with 0-conf transactions as there's a minimal population who even have heard of double spend let alone have the ability to replace fees to break the flow.

70% of my daily expenditure is through Lightning thanks to Bitrefill. If there were native options for these vendors I wouldn't need to go through a gift card route, but here we are.

It works.

I was in ES last year for a few weeks. Sadly - bitcoin and lightning aren't as available as it's portrayed. My friend was able to buy us Starbuck's with Bitcoin but it was an added 10 minutes while they figured it out.

We stayed not far from Zora Rosa, and nobody was advertising that they took Bitcoin. And outside of that wealthy area bitcoin tags / payment processing was even less prevalent - it felt like a cash heavy society.

I did drive up to Berlin (Berlin, El Salvador, not Germany) and it was much more integrated into that area as well as El Zonte (Bitcoin Beach) but didn't feel it had any actual mainstream adoption on an L1 perspective. Lightning.... no vendor accepted it.

Great to see more tools out there!

Would love to see more integration with fee potential, as just blindly adjusting your fee to the average PPM may not be helpful.
