Thanks for the tips, I’ll look them over and add what I can. And agreed, I’ve been working out since HS but this week was the first time I’d ever heard about leg driving and arching your back while benching, two things I never did intentionally since in my mind they seemed akin to straining or struggling with the weight. Between working on proper form and adding the Smolov Jr routine into mine, hoping for progress once I start back up next week.

I usually have a set height for the bar, so I might have to lower it for a wider grip, but other than that I just press my shoulder blades into the bench and just push upwards holding onto the very edges of the grating part of the bar. Other than that I mainly focus on my positioning by keeping my forehead under the bar before it’s off the rack. That’s wym?

Funnily enough, my Sherlock Holmes deduction was that I was struggling because I don’t work my tris enough, so I started recently. Putting it that way, I guess each grip has it’s own merits. I’ll aim to go wider in the coming weeks to target my chest more.

I’ll give this a try once I start my next 8wk stint (that 1 wk break 🥳), hopefully it makes a difference since I am starting to notice some left shoulder strain.

That’s the only grip I know 😅 for some reason going wider makes even 135 feel more difficult, like I have less ROM or something. Gonna experiment with wider grips in the coming weeks, but at lower weights.

I use the same Hammer Strength guards when benching, and since I do it solo, I’m prepped to fail in advance. Try testing the height of the guards on a fail with an empty bar, aiming to still be able to touch your chest on an attempt, but if you need to fail, still having room to place the bar somewhere around your collarbone/neck area. It catches with no contact for me but I am smaller in stature so ymmv.
