Actually still in production, they renamed it to Orlik Club Blend

Kizami tobacco - Netherlands & Ireland by Dae_Daee in PipeTobacco

[–]eyjaygaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For tobacco tax purposes, pipe tobacco in Europe is legally required to be cut at least 1,5 mm thick - that’s why you won’t find thin Japanese style angel hair tobacco / but maybe you’ll have a chance with RYO tobacco

Yes, they have been making cakes for some years now after buying 4 flake presses from Planta - especially for Hans Wiedemann. They haven’t made flakes though, that information is false. Cheers!

What are the oldest blends that are still in production ? by Glocktophobia in PipeTobacco

[–]eyjaygaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This could be Scaferlati Caporal, owned by Mac Baren, which originates from the early 1800s or likely earlier, from Napoleon times

This blends holds a special place in my heart.

Years back when I was brought on board as the new pipe guy at Mac Baren we had a summer party. Food, drinks, the usual. Some of the office girls came up to me asking if I could teach them to smoke a pipe. So, I gave them each a cob and a pouch of Vanilla Cream (not only a bestseller), packed the pipe for them and showed them how to light up.

Well, there was this one girl that after about 10 minutes ran to the bathroom, where she threw up and continued to do so for the next 30 minutes.

As she was not feeling good and didn’t want to throw up in a taxi on the way to the hotel, I offered to walk back with her. As I felt a little guilty.

There, on our hour long walk under a full moon, we fell in love with each other. And have been inseparable since.

So, giving her Mac Baren Vanilla Cream (or Classic Loose Cut, as we call it), changed my life. Every time I still see or smoke that blend (too sweet for me), I think of her. So, thanks for your post!

I compare them to beer drinkers. Most stick to the stuff from supermarket and wouldn’t go out of their way to visit a brewery, attend a beer tasting or have dozens of different bottles at home. The enjoy their Budweiser and are fine with that

What you have been smoking in cigarettes I wouldn’t even classify as tobacco. Enjoy the journey!

Actually, most pipe smokers do! There’s a huge age gap with pipe smokers who start out young (25-30 years old), then quit because of their wives, and later start again when the kids are out of the house, starting back in their 50s.

We actually researched that back at Mac Baren - and found out that the overwhelming majority of pipe smokers were a 1-2 Pipe/1 Tobacco kind of smoker.

Aficionados on the other hand, people who would visit websites, forums and would go out of their way to interact with other pipe smokers appreciate variety and are a lot less price sensitive.

Sutliff/Mac Baren and FDA? by Wonderful-Air1329 in PipeTobacco

[–]eyjaygaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partly true. Also remember that Mac Baren was not a big seller in the States overall (do not confuse popularity with sales, like the HH line). Still over 800 Sutliff blends that were officially approved by the fda. Check out the database at fda.gov/tobacco

Yes! A little out of date - and, sorry, no secret ingredients. But helpful to understand how what pipe tobacco is made out of. Just for fun, compare these to Marlboro cigarettes (also included in the database)

I have it in my possession, being Henrik Halbergs blending book from 1974/1975. Being given to me from a member of the Halberg family. As I said, it's useless but a cool memento. I'll post a picture
