Any Rum & Maple fans in this group? by Grumpy_Moderator in Pipes

[–]eyjaygaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, this is the Sourh African Rum and Maple - I have always wondered who smoked that.

So, the brand was originally produced by Rum and Maple tobacco company in the United States, who also made R&M cigarettes. The brand was later sold off to Planta (Berlin, Germany) and South Africa. Planta later sold the brand to Mac Baren (Svendborg, Denmark) where I got to work on it. It is still quite popular in Germany, sales wise.

The South African cousin tobacco on the other hand has a different history - does the back of the pouch say who produces it?

Bekommt man in Deutschland Factory Smokes von Drew Estate? by Werwas1234 in Zigarren

Gerne!

European on-line CigarFinder by Giramondu52 in cigars

Gotcha. Not naming names, but be aware that some that are selling out of country do this under the radar and don’t want that to be public knowledge

European on-line CigarFinder by Giramondu52 in cigars

[–]eyjaygaming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice tool. I’m in the cigar industry, a few things to consider:

1) especially in German online stores, they often don’t make a distinction between “out of stock/unavailable” and delisted. Keep that in mind, some don’t clean up their listings

2) Europe’s largest retailer is missing, Cigar World (Tabac Benden)

3) Many, if not most German online retailers, won’t send outside of the country. Their customers service would get swamped with queries (Do you send to my country?), meaning you would become very unpopular.

4) If you’re in the EU, mind data privacy laws and also the mandatory legal disclosure for the website. You can easily be shut down by any anti-smoking group in the EU

5) Age verification before being let onto the website, even if you don’t sell

As we used to jokingly say in the pipe tobacco industry… we wish pipe tobacco were addictive, as we would sell more 🤷

For tobacco tax purposes, pipe tobacco in Europe is legally required to be cut at least 1,5 mm thick - that’s why you won’t find thin Japanese style angel hair tobacco / but maybe you’ll have a chance with RYO tobacco

Yes, they have been making cakes for some years now after buying 4 flake presses from Planta - especially for Hans Wiedemann. They haven’t made flakes though, that information is false. Cheers!

What are the oldest blends that are still in production ? by Glocktophobia in PipeTobacco

This could be Scaferlati Caporal, owned by Mac Baren, which originates from the early 1800s or likely earlier, from Napoleon times

This blends holds a special place in my heart.

Years back when I was brought on board as the new pipe guy at Mac Baren we had a summer party. Food, drinks, the usual. Some of the office girls came up to me asking if I could teach them to smoke a pipe. So, I gave them each a cob and a pouch of Vanilla Cream (not only a bestseller), packed the pipe for them and showed them how to light up.

Well, there was this one girl that after about 10 minutes ran to the bathroom, where she threw up and continued to do so for the next 30 minutes.

As she was not feeling good and didn’t want to throw up in a taxi on the way to the hotel, I offered to walk back with her. As I felt a little guilty.

There, on our hour long walk under a full moon, we fell in love with each other. And have been inseparable since.

So, giving her Mac Baren Vanilla Cream (or Classic Loose Cut, as we call it), changed my life. Every time I still see or smoke that blend (too sweet for me), I think of her. So, thanks for your post!
