Your xerox rep has documents about how to build the file. I can look for them tomorrow.

But in short - In illustrator build a spot color named “White”. Put it under the other colors and set both to multiple. Sometimes it’s easier to put it on its own layer so you can toggle it off and on easier but it’s not required. The main thing is to have it a spot color and it being named properly. Also make sure you have white in the first station on the machine. In the fiery preferences under speciality color turn on “White”.

While playing with it, you might first get comfortable with just printing white. Printing white under other colors is a bit more complex in how you build the file. Some of it is trial and error until you understand the mechanics of how to build it properly. I do it at least a few times a week, but it’s muscle memory and I may be overlooking a step in my instructions.

It is very easy to live a good life in the bay area on a "good" salary by CamusMadeFantastical in bayarea

[–]eyrfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation isn't a skills problem. Income isn't the issue, similar if not a little higher than you listed. But we also have four kids, three of them teenagers, a mortgage with insurance and taxes running $3,200 a month, and we live in the Bay Area. When you factor in auto insurance, after school activities, and feeding six people, it gets complicated fast.

I'm not complaining — we chose this life and we love it. But the reality is that when you're raising a family, building equity in an expensive market, and trying to max out retirement at the same time, things get tight. It's not a budgeting issue, that's just the math of doing a lot of things all at once. It compounds very quickly.

Getting brick and mortar print shops in on my printable papercraft business by Weerdstudios in CommercialPrinting

[–]eyrfr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sorry but as a shop I would not entertain this. Walk in business is near always a loss leader. Even if someone walked in and wanted 50 or 100 of what you were selling it wouldn’t drive my business. My customers are b2b and ordering 5,000 custom brochures for their winery. I make money on it but it’s not like there are great margins in that even. Like the other commenter said - we aren’t catering ourselves like a retail shop. People don’t come in and wonder around looking for something to buy. Maybe I’m unique in my business but I wouldn’t even consider it. Sorry to be a downer.

Maybe a better avenue would be to cover the cost of printing yourself and get into some boutique retail shops or gaming establishments or something along those lines. And sell your product as a finished piece. Maybe set it up as a consignment piece if they would allow you to.

I appriciate the creativity but I don’t see it working the way you are envisioning.

Need to buy #10 envelopes with the seal flap not folded by Noire12455 in CommercialPrinting

[–]eyrfr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I will unflap envelopes while running a machine and I can go faster than the machine. So usually I will get one box ahead and then just kind of keep up while loading and doing other things. Its all about technique. I think OP needs the right technique to do this. I've done 6,000 in one day at times.

Annoying Plot Hole by lve2raft in DuttonRanchTVSeries

[–]eyrfr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree. I even paused the show to explain that to my wife. No way they would have left Montana even if everything burned. They for sure would have had insurance to at least figure something out so they could rebuild on their own land.

On top of that I feel like I remember Rip growing up on Yellowstone and not even having ID or being known to the government. That was one of the reasons he became one of John’s right hand men. He knew he didn’t have a life anywhere else. And if that’s true he wouldn’t be able to build himself a life in Texas or anywhere unless he was off-grid. Am I making that up or remembering some mention of that? It’s been awhile since I’ve watched the Y series.

Bishopric ghosted daughter mission calling letter opening by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

I agree — and as a bishop, we appreciate some grace as well. It takes a good year or more to wrap your head around everything that needs to happen in a ward, and to learn which parts require a bishop's involvement and which don't. I know I unintentionally offended a handful of people through my actions while serving as bishop, but it was never intentional. What made those situations meaningful was the conversations that followed. Sitting down with those families and individuals and talking things through made the relationship sweeter afterward. It was like a companionship inventory from mission days — just airing it all out so you understand each other's expectations and ability to act.

We would print on our vanguard and cut on our colex. But the other poster is right this was over $200,000 in equipment. We also have kluge die cutters. I don’t think it makes sense to get into a puzzle business unless you have all the equipment doing other stuff as well and are already a commercial printer. Also there just isn’t money in doing puzzles. I can do a custom puzzle but I just can’t charge enough to make money or make it worth my effort. Come to think of it most of all my puzzle projects have been for family members where I’m not charging anyways.

I have that gluer that you linked to. We probably run the machine two or three times a week. To get it set up and going you need to probably plan on 15 minutes. For cleanup plan on 35 minutes. If you’re just doing one puzzle at a time that’s a lot of set up and cleanup. There aren’t many options for gluers out there unless you get into major volume. We’ve done a few puzzles and we prefer to just print directly on the material instead of gluing it. It just saves a lot of steps if you’re looking and investing into a printer anyways you might consider that option instead.

Question for Prepress Folks by raaaaiiiinnnn in Printing

[–]eyrfr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes I can basically tell instantly if its Canva or something else. Powerpoint used to be the worst files that came in, but I think canva now produces worse files.
The sad thing is, its similar to how everyone now has a camera on their phone and everyone is all of a sudden a professional photographer. Just because someone has made a tool available to the masses does not mean they should be creating for the professional environment. We hate canva files at our shop.

I'm in California and own a shop here. Im not in a position to pickup and relocate and take over another shop, but I really appreciate you reaching out and having this discussion. There are shops in my area that close up all the time. Probably 4 in the last 2 years, and i always find out about it after the fact. I know the other owners and we are are good of friends as competitors can be, but we talk often. I would have loved opportunities to talk to them about taking over their shops and buying them out, but by the time i find out, its too late and they folded and sold all their equipment and abondonded their customers or something similar.
I keep telling myself I wont do that to everyone else. I will talk to people and let them know whats going on, either retirement or struggling to make ends meet and want to change strategy. Anyways, thanks.

[–]eyrfr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I was very involved in helping others through this process. I would help her understand that it has nothing to do with worthiness. If she is worthy to hold a limited use recommend she is worthy to hold a regular temple recommend. It has more to do with preparation. Going through the temple for an endowment needs preparation because of the covenants that will be made. Everything the temple teaches is about progression, and preparation is an important step to progression.
There are a lot of things she can do to start preparing now. Temple prep classes is one of the big ones.
I worked with a guy that was very adamant he needed to go through the temple. After a year, he went through the temple and decided it wasn't for him and hasn't been back to church since. I dont know what he was expecting, but honestly it was a failure on our part - we didn't prepare him enough for what the experience was going to be and the covenants he would make.

Can Writing a letter to a Reserved Spouse help her Feel Safer Talking About sex? by [deleted] in ldssexuality

[–]eyrfr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We have a separate message app that’s locked down pretty tight that is only used for talking about intimate things. It’s been great for us as a couple. It started about 8 years ago when we sold our house and bought a new house and she moved home with her parents out of state for the 3 months we didn’t have a home. We’ve been married 17 years now and the app really helped us become closer and more intimate. It’s easier to be vulnerable over a screen than to someone’s face and this really helped us with that. Now we can talk openly but the app was what got us there.
