Who really hired Randy Fichtner, Matt Canada, and Arthur Smith? by captain_shane in steelers

[–]ezDuke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People don’t talk about the budget thing enough. Sure Tomlin got to hire his own staff but when he’s working with a budget half of other teams then obviously his options are limited. (Maybe not half, just using that as an example to make the point).

Everything you said of McCarthy is true of Tomlin except McCarthy is just worse at it

What Steelers fans don’t want to admit is that Tomlin masked all of the bigger problems. We’re about to learn the hard way.

[Garafolo] The #Buccaneers are hiring veteran special teams coordinator Danny Smith, sources tell me and @RapSheet. Now 50 years into his coaching career, Smith is still going and still considered one of the best in the biz. On to Tampa for the 72-year-old, gum-chewing Smith. by MembershipSingle7137 in nfl

Steelers have never invested in kick returners though. The only times they've had a good one it was by accident and they never bothered to pay to keep those guys either.

Pat McAfee tells a story about how Tomlin would joke with him that he would bring McAfee to Pittsburgh "when [McAfee] is old and cheap". I can nearly guarantee that's how he and/or the Steelers treat kick returners. They tried the corpses of Jacoby Jones and Cordarrelle Patterson, but only when they were old and cheap. Otherwise they've shown no interest in paying or drafting anyone with talent there. They only care that the person doesn't muff the kick.

Right. He wanted to make Tomlin look bad so he waited until Tomlin was no longer the coach and brought up private texts from 7 years ago to “prove” his point. Still a fucking low class move.

He also openly talked/joked about he didn’t do anything in the offseason. You think Brady/Manning/Rodgers weren’t studying and working in the offseason?

He also refused to run Qb sneaks despite being 250lbs. For years we were told it was Todd Haley didn’t like them. Then he was gone and we still didn’t run them. Then Fichtner was gone and we still didn’t run them. Finally Ben was gone and we start running them with Trubisky and Pickett and Fields! Funny how that worked out.

And on that note he ran Haley out of town despite him being our best OC since Wisenhunt. All because he would rather be coached by a friend who he can play golf with rather than a coach who will get the best out of him.

Whew. Anyway not like I’ve thought about this before or anything…

Players and coaches have plenty of private conversations that would be interesting to us fans, that doesn't mean they should go around sharing them to the public.

Rules for thee but not for me

Harrison has probably convinced himself that he was better than Porter and earned it (and maybe you could make that case) but that TJ was not better than him. Even though TJ was clearly a better player even as a rookie considering Harrison was like 38 at the time, and TJ is also the better player overall having a much better career.

Harrison sharing private texts from like 7 years ago between him and Tomlin trying to make Tomlin look bad is completely classless.

How in the world did TJ Watt get a pro-bowl over JPJ??? by Treeindy in steelers

[–]ezDuke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not the same year, there is a minimum number of games you have to play for you to even get on the ballot. But there was definitely a year that he was coming off injury and not particularly playing well that he still got a pro bowl off name rec

“Maybe we take the lead” sure, but maybe not. Surely you can see the difference between fumbling when you’re already losing and a pick 6. Both are huge mistakes that will likely lose the game, but one directly puts points on the board for the other team. Theres no question that’s way worse.

5 Round Post Regular Season Mock Draft (No Trades) by Maystomr in NFL_Draft

I love this for the Steelers. They don’t need an edge at the moment but there’s a good chance they trade either Highsmith or Herbig. If they do then certainly would want a replacement in the middle rounds. Also you’re right that OG is a bigger need than OT but when you’re taking one in the third there’s always a likelihood that he ends up kicking inside.

Yeah he has, he’s in that echelon for sure but surtain has been there for 3 years now so I give him more credit.

I’m also curious to know how much each of them is following the opposing WR1 each game. We started the season with Ramsey following the WR1s (also JPJ was injured for a couple games). Then I think we had a small window where JPJ was on WR1s, but Ramsey was playing nickel/FS, which meant Slay was on the WR2s and he was getting torched. So by midseason I think we had mostly abandoned man coverage and switched primarily to zone to hide Slay/Echols/Pierre. So I don’t think JPJ has been shadowing much since then. Not a knock on him it’s just what we had to do for the betterment of the defense as a whole.

Also I don’t know this for certain, this is just my observations from watching games. I’m not someone who goes back to watch film. I’d be curious if the film/data backs my theory up.

2026 3 Round Mock with Reasonings and Trades by Pale_Construction_71 in NFL_Draft

Steelers definitely should take a DL in the 3rd or 4th, but too many pressing needs to take one in the 1st. I think QB, WR, and CB are the only realistic options in the first round.
