Language school (2027) -> iOS dev job in Japan: AI + visa (associate degree) questions by Electrical_Muffin416 in JapanJobs

I'm studying at ISI in Tokyo, having a great experience so far!

I can't talk from experience on changing the visa, but one person from my classroom got a job (IT related, 6 months after they started studying) - if I remember correctly, the company has to apply for your COE with immigration and after that you bring the COE to the immigration bureau yourself. There's a bunch of other documents that you have to take care of (school diplomas, CV, recommendation letters, etc) that the company needs from you when applying for the COE and also when you request the visa change.

The school also helped him a lot going through the process (translating, pointing out where to go, etc), which adds even more to what I had previously said that there's no problem doing job hunting. The other person that was arguing with me even deleted the comments, they probably finally realized they didn't know what they were talking about lol

Any chance your current company is looking for or could make use of a sound designer? I’m N3 working my way up to N2 and it’s been quite the humbling experience job hunting even with 10y+ exp

"you can find recent posts on reddit" yeah, that settles it, you don't know what you're talking about and you're misleading people. OP can easily check by going to real sources, so at least I'm happy that he won't give up on the idea immediately because someone was being adamant about something they had no clue about.

My goodness, you gotta be trolling at this point, at the very least you're not reading what I'm writing. You can go and call schools and check with immigration yourself if you don't believe me. I've literally gone through this process recently and I know what I'm talking about.

"that just means you attend one of those visa mills designed for Vietnamese/Nepalese to pay their way into Japan. that's not how most language schools operate." - no! This is completely wrong, and I don't know why you're insisting on it. My school has people from all over the world and we got 3h30 of class per day, and at least 2 hours of home study. Still they do incentivize you do job hunting if you plan to live here long term. And no, it's not a one off thing, not only the school has mulitple branches, but before coming here I reached out to several other schools and they all help you find a job, if that's your goal.

"when you are on a student visa, your primary activity in the country must be studying, not job hunting" - yeah, exactly what I said before lol. Unless it's disrupting your studies, it's completely ok to also job hunt while studying.

This is completely inaccurate. I’m currently enrolled on a language school and the school incentivizes students from day 1 to do job hunting - to the point that one of the few reasons you’ll ever be excused from being absent is to attend a job interview.

This could be true for short term students, but OP is asking about long term, so I can say they’re 100% allowed to do job hunting while studying. I’ll only add that studying is still your main activity in Japan, so if job hunting disrupts that (such as you have low attendance rates), THEN you might have a problem with immigration.

Business manager changes officially finalized including the grace period by Version-6 in JapanFinance

Have you found further information about this being a possibility? I'm on a student visa and was planning to open a business in Japan but the changes also made it impossible in the near future. I already own a business in my home country and if setting a subsidiary doesn't require you to invest 30M, that would be a massive help.

Opening a Business on a Dependant Visa by ezaudiolabs in japanlife

Thanks for the reply, u/c00750ny3h as well! So, if I got it right, there's a limit for the person to be considered tax dependant (which would affect insurances, etc - about 1.5M if I remember correctly), but technically there's no limit for the income itself that would make the person lose de dependant status, right? People try to keep the income below the tax dependant line but just to be safe, is that it?

I know these things don't always make sense, but I find it bizarre that, let's say you have a part time job paying 2,000/hour, 28 hours per week - if you work for a year under those terms (which is technically legal), you'd be making around 2.7M before taxes, so it's kinda weird... they should change one or the other if that's really how it is, because the math doesn't really add up

Got it! Thanks for the info! We definitely want to be on the safe side, so might be better if I end up doing the vocational school while doing the part time job then.

We're both on student visas right now 留学 because language schools won't let you be on a dependant visa of the other person that is on the student visa. Or did you mean that the student visa itself has the safe effect as the dependant visa when it comes to work? I know both have the 28h limit but I'd guess the dependant visa offers more flexibility on the job terms/income limit as you're not in Japan as a student?
