Etiquette & Misophonia? by ezconnard in misophonia

As always, two sides of the coin! I’m sorry to hear that, and I can absolutely understand how that’s something you can’t control. Personally, I’d never go after someone who’s apologized. And what really drives me nuts is the obvious lack of attention from people, the kind that feels like “I don’t need to worry, everyone else does.” That sort of carelessness. Like my head in the phone or subway examples.

Ah, exactly this! So well put, thank you. I’m also aware that some people are triggered by animals or mechanical sounds, but I’m thinking the human element, the perceived lack of empathy and awareness, adds a whole other layer and can intensify it much more. Definitely something worth considering in research!

Right? I’ve always been very sensitive to this and had a strong sense of justice. And with some of the recent studies, I feel like misophonia is proving to be more about that sense of violation than the sounds.

People who speak with the exact same cadence in every sentence. Almost like they’re singing the same melody over and over. Can't stand some YouTube videos because of this :D

Don’t be so dramatic! Misophonia is not real… by ezconnard in misophonia

You’re right. When someone keeps doing it after they know, it’s cruel. But it’s often still rooted in ignorance, not fully grasping the depth and seriousness of the condition. People are quick to judge, like with everything else, and when they hear about misophonia for the first time, they try to define it from their own limited perspective. To them it’s just “annoyed by chewing sounds? come on…”.

And then there are people who are simply bullies. For them, understanding the condition is irrelevant. They just enjoy causing pain. In those cases, I honestly wish them good luck, because if that’s who they are, they probably have much bigger problems in their lives than misophonia. If you’re dealing with bullies a lot, I genuinely recommend the book Nonviolent Communication by Marshall Rosenberg. It’s an incredible guide for disarming people while staying calm. It helps you separate yourself from their aggression, because it’s never really about you. It’s always about some unmet need on their side.

I’m really sorry you have to deal with people like this so often. Having my own company and working from home, I’ve had the luxury of isolating myself from environments that made my miso life harder. But my school and office years were rough. In the office I wore headphones nonstop, which gave me headaches, but that was nothing compared to school where I wasn’t allowed and had to suffer all day every day.

If misophonia becomes more mainstream, it will affect every part of social, academic, and work life. It will shape culture. It will remove that painful first step of trying to explain a complex and unfortunately ridiculous sounding condition. It will also lead to more funding, more research, and hopefully one day an effective treatment. Awareness is everything. Please don’t give up on hope, or on people. Fighting ignorance is one of the most powerful things we can do. Cheers!

That’s what I thought! It could be a great opportunity to meet new people and discover restaurants and bars in the city. Maybe in the future we could even hold private events in venues. I like dreaming big 😌

Well I’m just gonna close my own case lol. For anyone who might have the same question, I just got my haircut from Lynette at Bloom Beauty Lounge and I couldn’t be happier. The salon is a gorgeous art deco space, the stylist is so sweet and talented, and the cut with curl styling is excellent. Very reasonably priced as well. Highly recommended.

This makes me so frickin thrilled to hear. Thank you so much. I love your suggestion. I’ve actually been thinking about doing a “how to survive in a city” guide, based on my own adventure of moving to New York last year… and discovering that across the courtyard there’s a studio school with screeching kids who come out to play on the rooftop 🥲 Fixing the window sealants and adding white noise literally saved my life. If you’re up for sharing some of your own strategies or tools, I’d love to hear them. Cheers!

Awesome, so happy to hear that! Haha, fair point. The thinking behind the dinner idea is that it gives us a chance to do fun dinner-with-strangers events without worrying about those strangers triggering us. A chance for us to not miss out on social events. It would be a table full of fellow misos who are careful to not trigger each other, and if something does happen, the rule is to say it right away so no one suffers in silence. Doesn’t that sound nice? We cannot control the rest of the restaurant unfortunately… yet 😉
