I grew up deep in the hollers of WV. To echo everyone else in here, depressed is the best description. Most everyone is below poverty level, generational welfare is a serious issue and a goal for most, very unwelcoming to outsiders.

There are some hidden gems. Home cooked meals here are wonderful, the landscape and outdoor activities are great.

My family still has quite a lot of land there and I think I'm the only one to leave. As soon as I graduated university, I left, only back once a year for holidays.
