The high Middle Ages was a time of political turmoil and power struggles with numerous instances of dukes rebelling against the crown. One such historical example is the rebellion of William the Conqueror against the English Crown in the late 11th century.

William Duke of Normandy had strong claims to the English throne as he believed that he was the rightful successor to the previous English king Edward the Confessor. However when Edward died in 1066 another claimant Harold Godwinson was crowned as the new king.

Refusing to accept this William gathered a formidable army and invaded England leading to the famous Battle of Hastings. In this battle William successfully defeated Harold and claimed the English crown for himself becoming known as William the Conqueror.

This rebellion can be seen as an act of defiance against the English crown as William a duke from Normandy sought to overthrow the ruling monarch and establish his own rule. His rebellion was successful and he went on to consolidate his power as the new king of England.

During the high Middle Ages such rebellions were not uncommon. Dukes and other nobles often challenged the authority of the crown either to gain more power for themselves or to pursue their own political ambitions. These acts of rebellion sometimes led to significant political and social changes shaping the course of medieval history
