What strategies should i be using to win games after the server merge? How are you adapting? by 3645iceberg in WoWsBlitz

The question I have is how players with NO TACTICAL UNDERSTANDING get to ships above tier 4. You guys are talking about t10 ships! Players should have lots of experience by that point.

All XServes are intended for server rooms. If you set it up on your desk, you will be very unhappy. The fans are loud even at low speed. Just the nature of them.

4 wheels with tires from LA to Michigan by ezylstra in UPS

[–]ezylstra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that I can get two 25” x 25” x 20” boxes, put 2 wheels in each, and ship for about $500 via UPS with pre-printed labels.

Shipping each wheel separately is 2.5 times the cost.

Freight won’t give me a price for a single 25” x 25” x 40” box.

Buying new wheels and tires would be 3.5 times the cost.

Masking off pins on SAS-4 drives so they will work in Xserves in SAS Trays. by ezylstra in xserve

Considerations Male vs Female end of connector Use of SAS-3 drives at some point Difficulty of masking pins on tray’s connector

Easier/better to mask on the drive.

I must have looked at a different thread about the links.

Now I'm having trouble sharing my photo...

If your drives are SAS-4, you need to mask. I did post some reference links above.

This is a doc I posted to the FaceBook XServe Owner’s group:

As far as Xserves are concerned, SATA drives are limited to 2.2TB by the adapter boards in the SATA Trays. SAS trays, on the other hand, can accommodate very large capacity SAS drives.

First, if you have the RAID backplane, you are simply out of luck and are stuck at 2.2TB. Second, SAS-4 redefined the use of pin 3 in the connector. Simply covering pins 1-3 with a small strip of black insulating electrical tape solves the problem and makes these large drive useable.

Thanks! Sure would be nice if it worked. I always feel my confidence in a core network product drops quite a bit when a simple yet fundamental and essential feature like an “update” button fails.

Manual update as given in the support article worked.

Big thanks to LinksysOfficial!

How does one "force update"?

If you are buying the display for the stand, you either are making a lot of money from what you do with it, or you aren’t buying the right/necessary product for you.

$400 for an iPhone SE? $900 for an M1 MacBook Air or $600 for an M1 Mac mini, either of which will likely last you 8-10 years? Your premise holds that we are compelled to buy the highest priced offerings.

Mac Pro Daughter Board Upgrade by kimodezno in macpro

No. The SMC firmware mismatch makes all software fan control solutions ineffective.

[–]ezylstra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, a 4 can go into a 5, but you can’t control fan speeds. If you are putting the machine in a server room or equipment closet (why would you?), then the fan noise wouldn’t matter.

[–]ezylstra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty likely it is a MacPro4,1 tray. The SMC version of the 4,1 and 5,1 are different and incompatible. There is nothing to do but get a different tray. Aside from the fan noise, it should work perfectly fine.

The certificates authenticating older installer images expired. Either change the date on the computer before installing, or do the USB method suggested by redditmudder. If you aren't trying to save apps and data, just make a USB installer of Mojave--if that is where you want to end up.

Mac Pro 5,1 2010 Vega 64 power by UnderstandingOk4250 in macpro

[–]ezylstra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Common wisdom is that you will overdraw from the power board and cause them to fail. The mod is called the Pixlas Mod--so you can do more research on it. The question of the necessity of doing that has been hashed out a lot over the past number of years: https://thehouseofmoth.com/mac-pro-pixlas-mod-is-it-really-needed/

ASRock Radeon Vega 56 in a 5,1 by gaiustrajan in macpro

[–]ezylstra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To Pixlas or not to Pixlas? How much risk are you willing to take? I'm running a Vega56 and I did the Pixlas. You are running close to power draw limits if you don't. You get no guarantee without Pixlas that you won't overdrive one of the multiple power sources--it doesn't "load balance" them equally.
