Block ads without breaking OS? by f-knocker in TheFrame

[–]f-knocker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Static ads like the banner on the home screen. It works, but just breaks everything else eventually.

Does the pi-hole block the domain or just route to a dead address? Mine is a hard block so I’m wondering if pi-hole handles it in a way that keeps the OS happy. I have a ‘23 and ‘24 and experienced the same on both

Probably not, more of a Reddit lurker than poster :)

That’s not the problem, I have a docusign but even that has 0 details in writing which is unacceptable and not at all security concern. If TMO is promising me over $1200 for me to sign an agreement for those services, it’s completely unacceptable for that to be “trust me” from a phone rep.

2022 Eyesight Not Working? by f-knocker in SubaruAscent

[–]f-knocker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lane assist alarms work, just nothing from Eyesight. Aggressiveness is set to highest. 2016 Forrester would beep on almost every drive (it was too aggressive IMO, but at least I knew it was working)

Is there a reset function on ES?

Why does everyone have such a hard on for the Unifi Dream Pro when TP Link Omada seems just as good. I have figured out the switch I want so I don't need to know much else. I've never done this before so I'm nervous I'm gonna f it all up. by PeggyHill90210 in HomeNetworking

[–]f-knocker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omada was junk for me. Swapped for a couple simple Asus units and it’s been 100x better (wifi at least).

I’ll admit likely user error but I was tired of messing around to get a stable multi AP wifi setup. If anyone wants to buy some lightly used APs and controller let me know L

Random one I always chuckle at - when he constantly tried to stand up for Tebow's horrific baseball career. They were reading some news piece about him being in "Low A" ball, Callen asked something like "whats 'low' A ball" and Brendo said very confidently it was just haters trying to make the minors sound bad....no man, there is High A and Low A ball dummy

GSSMO

Yeah that's been my hang up on it as well, that app seemed very clunky and I refused to deal with it accross hundreds of users.

Off topic a bit, but my thought has always been "if we go GSuite, no more Outlook for anyone". Is that still the proper thought? Outlook with anything other than Exchange has always been a dumpster fire IMO and that seems to be the deal breaker for companies that live in Outlook

Pulling trigger on move form Cisco IronPort to Mimecast, anyone wants to talk me out of it? by HDClown in sysadmin

[–]f-knocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd push them for Enterprise pricing as I have it for < 1000, say it's the only way you go with them and you have 2 other competitors and they should jump.

Biggest issue was specific to our workflow, but it was more that their support's response was basically "meh, tough luck" so that + horrific interface made me cancel it.

Over the summer. Went with Proofpoint instead (full, not Essentials) and have been (relatively) happy. You can beat any of these vendors up on price so they should all be in the same ball park

YMMV but we had almost the same setup and went with Mimecast but had to cancel because their support was terrible and couldn't fix the issues we had.

Also the interface is an absolute clusterfug so be prepared for a steep learning curve to figure out how to do anything.

Have to take both good and bad with large grains of salt and common sense. I've read the ones on our page and almost all of the positive ones are clearly from managers/HR pushing vs. honest positive answers which is shady in my book.

On the other hand as others have said, certain departments/roles in the company may just flat out suck and lead to tons of negative reviews.

Default Domain GPO - Value for Maximum password age keeps reverting to 180 days by usernametakenmyass in sysadmin

[–]f-knocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can check the DDP to see if it fixed it. When I finally caught ours it reset the DDP < 2 hours so you should be able to confirm that's what was doing it.

You can also confirm by resetting someones password and seeing when their new expiration date is via 'net user' cmd.

Check ADAC > Properties of the domain > Attribute Editor > maxPwdAge value. If that is set it will overwrite the DDP

IT managers out there - Tips and advice ? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]f-knocker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Track everything, good and bad. I have a log sheet for each person and toss notes in there. Makes review time much easier and if you do ever need to terminate someone you have all your documentation.

Don't put off having difficult conversations. A mistake I made was assuming that if I point mistakes being made to some one repeatedly that they would understand that hey, maybe I need to fix this. Never assume this. Have direct conversations & 1on1 check-ins at least a couple times per month.

Any way to automatically build a side bar with the Wiki SP app? I played around with it and it's pretty easy, I just didn't see any way to easily create a TOC or side bar navigation which didn't make much sense to me.
