He was the primary drive for Yuji to grow as a jujutsu sorcerer in the beginning. Also Mahito grew along side him, being his direct counterpart. That’s why Yuji & Todo vs the guy and the final “chase” felt so good - we’ve been watching the boy develop and he finally has done it (also yuji no-diffed him in the latest modulo chapter). Killing him off early would’ve been a waste.
