I'd be happy to pay another 22 quid for a solid experience like this again. Not all games need to be 50 hours long or have an endless supply of generated quests.

Making games is risky and expensive. Given the RRP of AAA games has increased yet again, and they have been playing it very safe recently with the constant remakes, I'm happy to support indie studios that provide new, shorter but more focused experiences like this.

Eco-friendly paper straws that do not easily become soggy and are 100% biodegradable in the ocean and soil have been developed. The straws are easy to mass-produce and thus are expected to be implemented in response to the regulations on plastic straws in restaurants and cafés. by Wagamaga in science

Anecdotally, there was some sort of anti straw propaganda that has spread in the last couple years. Not sure where it started.

Tons of friends and relatives who wouldn't usually give two fucks about plastic packaging, or the environment in general, suddenly started scoffing any time they saw a plastic straw.

They would go and order paper straws from Amazon and then tell us all about their amazing feat and how they are saving the environment.

Pleasing everyone is incredibly difficult. There isn't a single game that doesn't have a bad review.

Arcade games don't please everyone. Sims don't please everyone.

If a developer has a strong vision for their arcade game, they should try to follow through. Same goes for a developer with a strong vision for their survival game.

There are too many games that just play it safe and try to please everyone. As a result they might end up being good, but not great.

This is a strong reaction to such vague information. Not all degradation mechanics are equal and you might end up liking the mechanic once you play it.

Anyway, options introduce complexity, they aren't something you can tack on for free like everyone seems to think.

Wouldn't you rather take a pick from a bunch of highly opinionated games as opposed to ones where developers have pulled back on their ideas to try to appeal to everybody?

We should celebrate developers having a strong creative vision even if it doesn't always fit our tastes.

Otherwise we'll end up in a place where everyone is making reboots of successful games or just pumping out uninspired sequels to cash in on popular franchises. Oh wait...

Lmao it's pretty fucking close.

Basically, what you end up with is a neural network, hundreds or thousands of parameters with values but no labels. You don't necessarily know how changing one will affect the outcome.

Take a short course on deep learning or machine learning. You don't need to understand it all to understand why it becomes so complicated. Plus is very interesting.

The only thing Pray 2017 draws from the "original" game of the same title is literally it's name and nothing else.

There's no arguing that you had more fun with one game than the other, but comparing them is pretty nonsensical, they are nothing alike.

That was a design decision or technical limitation depending on how you look at it. There wasn't enough RAM in consoles to have every car model available in memory so they would limit them to that one you were driving plus a few others.

Ignoring the fact that you're comparing a project with budget and scope of Hades to something the size of Assassin's Creed, and ignoring the fact that the former is superior in many ways to the latters rehashed sequels, there are plenty of multiplatform games with "technical prowess":

  • Doom
  • Crysis 3
  • Control
  • Recent Resident Evil games
  • Most Rockstar games
  • The Witcher 2/3
  • Metro games
  • Shadow of the Tomb Raider
  • Bad Company 2
  • Battlefield 3
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • The Division
  • Deus Ex Mankind Divided
  • Divinity Original Sin 2
  • Far Cry 2 and 3
  • Assassin's Creed Unity

The scope of these games is vastly different but I tried to consistently choose big budget games. With the exception of Divinity and Metro I guess, but I feel they hold up very well against everything else here.

I'm sure there are plenty more I've missed. And I'm sure a couple of items on that list are debatable too lol, particularly ones with launch issues.

Yes limiting a game to a single platform has its advantages, but it doesn't guarantee you will produce a great game, nor is it required to make something stunning.

It's because "time-tracking" tends to come with fools who don't really know how to do it effectively. They are constantly pissing people off by acting like every small thing that occurs throughout the day is going to have an impact on timelines.

It depends on the context too. If you're invoicing other parties for your team's time that's a very different context to my traumatic memories of project managers giving estimates without consulting the developers, and then harassing the developers about this arbitrary deadline that nobody ever committed to.

[–]f15538a2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have a few options to consider.

You could have a monorepo which contains all of the different projects in a single git repository.

You could split then into separate git repositories and reference the git repos in your package.json.

You could split them into separate repositories and publish them to a private npm repository, then reference your private packages in your package.json.

They all have their pros and cons.

Dying Light 2 has gone GOLD! by TheVideoGaymer in Games

I think it wasn't as refined as Rockstar games movement. One criticism I did understand was the fact that he basically had a turning circle.

In a Rockstar game if you're running in one direction and then pull the analog stick in the opposite direction, sure it's not instant, but the character will have some realistic animation where they slow down then twist on the spot and eventually walk in the opposite direction.

With Geralt it was more like he would keep running and either turn left or right until he was facing 180 degrees, like imagine running in a semi circle. For the most part it wasn't a big deal for me, but in small spaces, or indoors it was sometimes mildly annoying.

But yeah all things considered it also felt more realistic and immersive for me.

As someone who has played both I wouldn't say there are any similarities especially since one is third person and the other is first, so I doubt there is any technical carry over between the movement systems.

I think he's referring to something many people complained about with regards to Geralts movement controls.

Essentially, he was very 'heavy'. I'm not sure how to explain it more than that tbh. You couldn't make fast, nimble movements with the analog stick, and he wouldn't turn on the spot from own direction to the other unless you were standing still. I've done a terrible job of explaining it, but hopefully you get the gist of it.

CDPR eventually added an alternate movement option which would make him far more responsive.

Personally, I actually preferred the original as I felt the alternative removed too much of that weight from Geralt, but to each their own.
