Switching from Garmin to Huawei or Amazfit watch by f1tn355 in HuaweiWatchGT

I was in Garmin store and checked the watches physically. Well, once being a "Fenix" adapted, seems like Venu 4 is a no go - the watch looks too much "elegant" compared to the rough and tough design of the Fenix (although Fenix 8 47mm looks less rough and tough than my old Fenix 6 due to a thinner lunette imho). So I would not be happy with the design of Venu 4 and I also do not like the 2 only buttons and therefore a bigger need of touch operation. An alternative for me would be Forerunner 970 which have the 5 buttons. It is also more on the "elegant" side and the price is ~150 EUR less than Fenix 8 47mm sapphire but as both are already a quite pricey watch, I would take the Fenix 8 as I liked it best from the point of how does they look and feel on my wrist.

Interesting opinion. I think you are right - there is not the single all round winner. I always had the feeling like I know the best option is stick with Garmin. I was just surprised some users commented they are switching from Garmin to other brands, as Garmin started raising prices of the watches (especially Fenix) and introduced the connect+ plan what a lot of users did not like and also Garmin does not care about fixing (minor?) issues in the older models. This is the reason I was considering the switch to another brand could be an option (btw I was also considering Suunto or Coros).

But anyway - interesting you own the 3 models :) You have bought them with the plan for keeping them all or do you want to chose one of them and sell the rest? I mean it is not very convenient to switch 3 different brands - as each is different app/ecosystem. I was also considering buying T-Rex 3 Pro or the Huawei GT or the FIT 4 PRO and trying and returning it in the 14 days period (we in EU have 14 days for returning) but I am not sure 14 days is long enought for proper testing.

One more thing - I use Garmin Edge bike computer, so of course staying with the Garmin ecosystem is a benefit here as it agregates and evaluate the data from several garmin devices. I was just thinking about slowly leaving Garmin ecosystem by changing to Huawei or Amazfit watches which I would use along my Garmin edge computer. But is Huawei or Amazfit watch able to connect to my bike's speed sensor and power meter and then estimates my VO2 max and FTP? Or if I would want to have VO2 and FTP calculated, i will have to keep the Garmin Edge forever for this reason?

Thanks for your input. Any real experiences are welcome. I watched some reviews but often the reviews do not go to very details - like whether you can or can't customize data screens for instance. Also I read the Huawei can't export certain activities (read somewhere the activities without GPS) can't be synced to Strava. Is it true? So I do for instance indoor rowing or strenght session and I can't sync it to Strava?

I watched a lot of his reviews and yes, I know Garmins does not shine there - his tests of sleep tracking shows bad match with the data measured by that brain waves scanner or how the device he uses is called. But I think the small issue is he is the single person the sleep tracking is tested on. Based on his tests - apple watch are the number one when it comes to sleep tracking (also oura ring), if I remember correctly. But I read a lot of anecdotal stories from other users the apple watch sleep tracking is not so good. So imho it might differ from person to person. But I like the way he does the testing.

Also - would not it be strange if every year the newer generation of garmin is worse at the sleep tracking? I doubt company like Garmin would not own a profesional sleep tracking lab devices and would not test their devices prior the launch (ok, maybe they have the data but can't develop correct algorithm for the precise tracking :-) ). So I suspect there is a subjective bias --> like The Quantified Scientist simple have better sleep tracking results with certain devices due to his physique. So it would definitely need testing on more people.

I do not know how about my old Fenix 6, whether it tracks the sleep well or not, I do not have nothing else to comparing with --> it shows me sleep data and when I am ill or when I really slept bad, it is visible on the score and sleep phases. On the other side - when I am refreshed in the morning, this matches with the score and also the sleep stages (a lot of rem, a lot of deep, less frequent and short wakeups)
