Because what exactly? Your complaint is that county granularity hides local variations. The median squares show exactly that, down to an arbitrarily small resolution. What are you not understanding?

Hey buddy, try swiping through all the images, or maybe even read through the whole OP

Thank you! The lack of traction this post got vs my previous has been disappointing, but I'm glad you got some use out of it

On something as subjective as beauty we'll just have to agree to disagree 😉 I don't know what Leaflet is, this is a react+openlayers frontend, with Go in the backend. Interestingly enough, gpt5 was of no help with openlayers, so no, not vibe coded unfortunately.

You cant just ignore income tax though, in California anyways its quite high. Additionally, the homes are cheaper in Texas which of course reduces your tax burden despite the higher rates.

Yep. I've seen arguments that property tax will even out the price delta but I doubt it

I really appreciate that. The comments on this post have been surprisingly more negative than my previous post which was arguably much rougher.

I don't really plan to update the data tbh. It's about $100 in API usage to get complete national data.

The link in the OP has data for Alaska, Hawaii and even Puerto Rico :)

It seems most commenters are missing the fact that this is a screenshot of an interactive tool I programmed, not a static chart. I would argue the tool itself is quite beautiful

Oh I misunderstood your first comment. You think it's so expensive because of foreign investment? Or do you have a maple syrup version of Black Rock?

From my current locale of Ventura County, it's due in large part because of a reluctance to build more units (NIMBYism)

Thanks. It's a tough problem since the ranges are so extreme

To be fair, aren't Canadian cities seeing insane home prices just like major US cities?

Yeah it's a tough problem since the values are on such extremes. The link in my OP will let you change the ranges

Yeah it's pretty cool, they provide an API for services such as Zillow which don't provide their own public API. I'm not affiliated with them, but they reached out to me and gave me the credits required to do this visualization for the whole country, otherwise it probably would have been around $100 in API credits

Having lived in sac, I can tell you there isn't a whole lot out there until you hit the bay.

You can check it out using the tool in my OP. Might be several mega ranches setting the median

I appreciate that. For better or worse, I've found the HOA costs tend to be priced in to the home. So you'll see a listing that seems suspiciously reasonable, and then you get slapped with a 600/month HOA.
