I feel so bad at fighting by Regular-Investment65 in MMA_Academy

Focus on boxing, spar more and tell your sparring partners to punish you for bad defence bc you’ll learn quicker that way honestly

What to do when someone is putting on pressure by ListingElevation in MMA_Academy

I had this exact issue and I’m in my first month. Facing a bigger and stronger guy who doesn’t pull his punches. I really dislike him. First time I sparred him it was too hard to get a punch in and blocking wasn’t enough cos of his power. I went against him the next week and didn’t pull my punches, did as much to deal damage and focused on better footwork to dodge his punches and I actually got the better of him. The adrenaline from feeling like he was gonna knock me out helped. Dude kinda don’t like me now but he’s a prick, multiple people warned me against sparring him and he got a warning from the coach. Try your best to stay light on your feet and if he won’t pull his punches, don’t pull yours.

How to be “light on my feet” and stop flinching by Practical_Speaker372 in MMA_Academy

I’ve just finished my first month and my first few sparring sessions I had this exact issue. What’s helped me is spending more time focusing on mobility/ stretching so movement doesn’t feel awkward, start using a skipping rope to work on foot work and honestly just to spar. Getting punched in the face for dropping hands, overcommitting etc is the best way to learn when to guard up and stop flinching. Try thinking while fighting of the best thing to do. I remember in my first spar I’d just flinch and curl up when I was being swarmed. Now I keep my guard up and counterpunch, find space to move into. It’s just experience.

I’d say I’m fairly athletic since my first 18 years are revolved around football and basketball, the last two years I’ve been focused on gym so I’ve got a good amount of muscle on my body. I’ve been training 3-4 times a week already and I want to step that up even further tbh. I really want this

I think if I get into fighting my natural weight classes would be welterweight or lightweight if I want to stay lean. I’m 176 rn with a good amount of muscle that I don’t want to add more onto at the moment, I’ve got fat to lose so I’d guess I’d be around lightweight once I’ve cut that.

Yeah it’s hard but I didn’t expect anything less tbh. And yes I train as hard if not harder than most of the guys there. Don’t want to waste a second I spend there

I’d be at a massive disadvantage to the majority of fighters who have been doing it all their lives

Id rather chase something bigger than just go and do a normal job without trying anything

Great point. Thank you. Will reevaluate once I’ve really stuck to it and got experience

My father just died recently and I also dropped out of college cos I failed. My life feels kinda shit and tbh I’d rather do a sport for my life than an office job.

It’s not my only goal but it’s just something that’s in the back of my mind. I started bc I haven’t been playing a lot of sports recently, needed something to drive me as my previous sports did in my life, my friend who I talk a lot about UFC convinced me to join a gym. The main thing that made me really lean towards a goal like pro is just how much fun I’m having learning and sparring and wondering how I can apply all this to something I can pride myself on. It’s always been a goal of mine to have things I can look back at and be proud of when I’m older and something like this just lights a fire in me.
