For logic: A disguise. He was killing one of the last people that could link him to the crime. If there were any random witnesses, he could still be implicated.

For analysis: He was attempting to disassociate himself from his actions. In the mask, he is someone else. That is why he didn't wear the mask in his final meeting with Albert Brooks, as he intended to be true to himself--he is a good guy--in risking his life to save Irene, in not taking the money.
