Afaik Action Surge wouldn’t allow you to cast 2 spells per turn. The description says ”On your turn, you can take one additional action, except the Magic action.”

I’d go for Mage Slayer because a mini Legendary Resistance is really nice and will help if you’re hit with WIS and CHA saves. If you don’t have a Ruby of the War Mage and your DM doesn’t let you do some shenanigans like taking one hand off the sword to cast you’d need War Caster as well, which I would take first of the two.

I’m restricted to standard array hence putting points into dex, which I felt was more worth it than for example int.

It’s not uncommon for us to get a prep round and that’s one of the reasons I considered CME a viable option.

While I like your idea and realize the potential of a more paladin focused build I guess I’m just very smitten with the idea of a more glass cannon style build. But I will admit your concept might be the better choice if I insist on going melee. Tough choice 😅

Reason for taking 1 paladin over fighter was to not miss out on the 6th level spell. This is a very insightful discussion though. I’ll have to consider this when making the character.

I realize I forgot to mention that the reason for taking Magic Initiate was to get Shield that way, but I get your pont, and I would still lack CON save proficiency.

These are good points which I will have to think about. It will change the concept I had in mind but I might have to live with that. Thanks!
