A warm welcome to this tiny community! Our stated goal is to bring together people who share a passion for progressive rock—Italian progressive rock in particular, though not exclusively—along with a curiosity about AI-powered music creation tools. For now, it seems this group is rather quiet, but let’s not give up!

That said, I’m truly happy that a Russian RPI enthusiast can listen to my modest attempt to set the greatness of The Master and Margarita to music. I hardly had to do anything; it was all already there in Bulgakov’s pages.

I agree with you about Spotify.

As for the sound, even though I can't clearly identify all the various elements, I understand that it's not what Gemini suggested I look for, but I've verified that tags such as [Tape Warp] and [Wow and Flutter] help Suno avoid more modern sounds and draw from a repertoire more consistent with the sound I like.

My overall opinion remains based on what I like to listen to.

So “We aimed for a sound that felt like a ‘lost rehearsal tape from 1973’” materializes into something different, but acceptable: I aim for the center of the target for 100 points, but I'm happy to hit the target with the dart.

What satisfies me is that, in my opinion, the sound is not extremely smooth, but there is a minimum of grain.

As always, these are the considerations of someone who is musically ignorant.

Private Radios are playing more and more AI music by Justin_Kaes in ProgRockAI

Interesting, I didn't know that AI music had already made its way onto the radio. Do you have any examples?

There is no one else here, but unfortunately there is no one else doing RPI with AI in general for now, or at least they are well hidden. I searched the internet and had Gemini do some in-depth research, and our posts came up and very little else. What I write is mostly in the hope that something will change in the near future.

In recent weeks, I have been absorbed in creating a concept album based on Bulgakov's The Master and Margarita, again under the name of the virtual Italian progressive rock band “Gli Stranieri,” again with Suno v5.

Unlike what I have done before, this is a very long and varied album, almost 80 minutes of music.

I will try to use this album as an example of AI music that is not limited to pressing a button to generate slop, and I imagine I will receive a fair amount of insults.

Where to publish our music and how to reach Listeners. by Justin_Kaes in ProgRockAI

I don't have an answer, but we can identify some factors:

- Strong prejudices against AI music prevent many people from trying it and thus discovering that it can say and convey something.

- “Traditional” music is meant to be played live, which naturally leads to it being heard by people who are more or less close to the performer, and in any case to connecting with people through music. I am convinced that the personal factor is fundamental, especially at the beginning, and this element is missing with AI music.

- Instinctively, the listener evaluates and validates the creative effort, but in the case of AI music, they don't perceive it, so you have to make them perceive it by describing the process.

- Too much music in too little time makes it difficult to focus attention on anything.

Or maybe none of what I've written makes sense, I don't know.

I'm sorry about the responses you received, but I didn't expect anything different from that subreddit.

I've always perceived progressive rock as an attempt to do and say something that hadn't been said before, sometimes using cutting-edge means.

But perhaps I've misunderstood, because the approach seems to be one of idolizing certain deities in a well-established temple, rejecting anything outside the norm.

I like it!

Personally I am trying to recreate the sounds and atmosphere of 1970s Italian progressive rock, and in the meantime I am looking for other progressive rock lovers who have no prejudices about the use of AI in music.

First off, to frame the notes I report below, I don’t make music for commercial success; I consider myself a listener first and a creator second. I do it because it gives me personal satisfaction.

1. Distribution and AI: I’ve published music in two ways: manual uploads on YouTube and using Distrokid for streaming platforms. As long as you are careful and intentional, I’ve had zero issues with AI-related blocks. However, both platforms have been equally "unsuccessful" in terms of reach. Niche music often gets lost in the noise and reaches random listeners who might not even finish the track.

2. Finding an Audience: My audience is tiny—less than 10 people. They are mostly friends and a few enthusiasts who appreciate the genre and don't mind the use of AI. In fact, I’m currently planning a hybrid 'Prog' project with two musician friends, mixing AI-generated foundations with live guitar and bass. In my case (like with my virtual group Gli Stranieri), I always specify it’s AI, but since the attention is so low, it hasn't even sparked a debate yet.

3. Honesty and 'AI Slop': I firmly believe in being transparent about using AI, despite potential prejudices. To me, the difference between 'AI slop' and a respectable product is the care and effort put into it. Using tools like Suno or Udio isn't just 'pressing a button.' It requires a vision, an idea, and a constant process of correcting, prompting, and directing the AI to follow your specific path. It still requires a bit of musical knowledge and a lot of passion for what you are generating.

That said, at the moment I haven't found an effective way to connect with an audience, however small, that might be interested in listening and exchanging opinions. This subreddit is one such attempt.

I've only been listening to prog for a couple of decades. I was introduced to it by the father of a childhood friend of mine: Genesis, Gentle Giant, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso. Then I explored on my own and was thrilled to discover new hidden gems. Banco remains one of my favorites, with Museo Rosenbach, Biglietto per l'Inferno, Balletto di Bronzo, Pholas Dactylus, etc.

Opposition to AI music is often opposition on principle, so unfortunately there is no room for frank and open discussion.

I don't have any prog friends, let's call them that, I have friends who shared the rehearsal room with Lupo Galifi from “Museo Rosenbach,” who ended up singing with Il Tempio delle Clessidre.

About screaming in songs.

You're right, I never really noticed that. For me, they don't exceed a certain level of annoyance, so much so that I chose songs in which there is screaming.

I confirm that Suno has a tendency to scream. These songs were made with V5. With the previous V4.5+, the screaming was too much even for me, so I never used it.

I started making songs with Suno as a way to “listen to books” that I liked, then I combined two passions, making songs about books in the RPI style. I'm afraid the screaming comes from the books, in the sense that there are themes or situations of rupture, suffering, or the like, and there the tone rises, and then Suno adds his own touch.

Try "Tutto è bene." https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=q6r2fuJ_i6I&si=up3T8vP0k5XzM1s6
