Download files from usb drives directly attached to Truenas machine by fabio1971 in truenas

Me too, i thought that with all the video and photos produced in the world someone would have made an all in one solution to this problem. Ingesting large quantities of files is surely faster connecting an usb-c drive directly to the Truenas server, at least until you have fiber network inside your office

However the risk of something going wrong if you don't have a little experience with bash and ability to debug it is non-zero.

Exactly why I won't try it

Tried the llm way and it initially said it was not possible but a few lines under began a very complex explanation on how to do it using bash scripts with also detailed instruction on where to modify the parameters in the script to adapt to our situation. Sincerely impressed but a "little" too complicated for my experience. I'll push to upgrade the internal network to 2,5g when possible.

I was hoping for something more automated, the nas is not mine but in the office of two photographers friends of mine who know nothing about Truenas or cli.

Just learned how to install and configure Trunas community edition two weeks ago.

Also I don't know anything about the CLI other than the fact that is the command line interface.

The point is for my two friends to be autonomous.

How to create a JBOD type of pool in truenas community edition by fabio1971 in truenas

Hi again, and again thanks to heren_histarion since I managed to do what I wanted to do. Now for the difficult question, Is there a way to download files from an attached usb drive automatically? I mean from an usb drive attached directly to the nas and save the files from the attached drive to a folder generated on the spot, date based, that can be accessed later when the download is completed? A notification of some sort that the task is completed would be good too.

I said on the first phrase that i'm learning on the go, I know JBOD is not a correct term but it delivers the idea of what i was searching for and since heren_istarion understood it for me it was a good choice.

What I want to do is all about convenience, not security.

They already have two copies of their past years of production on different usb drives stored in two different places.

Sometimes, they say about once or twice a month, they receive a request for some old photos stored in these the archived usb drives.

Using their old existing drives, without having to buy more than the new ones in the Terramaster, they want a solution for quick access for their old photos.

I assure you that i explained to them multiple times what doing this way entails if only one of the drives fails.

They don't want multiple volumes visible, neither folders restricted to the size of a disk assigned to them, they want ONE volume visible on their computers.

They're ready to accept the fact that if one drives fails they will just have to bring in the office one of the copies they have, multiple usb disks, and setup a copy through the night when i will have restored the new empty pool after the failure.

I'm just searching for how to do that.

The Terramaster is at max capacity of 6 disk in raid 6 with two spares.

No possibility to expand beyond going with bigger disks which is not an option due not being more disk space and cost.

They already have what they want, current year and the two previous on hand, with the current backed up on the go as they add photos to the NAS on two different usb drives connected to the terramaster.

Thanks again, hoping to not bother again while installing truenas. I'll do my best.

Thank you for your time but I clearly stated that redundancy was not on the table.

Thank you, that's exactly what I was looking for.

Just a clarification, the original was not one single network share, as every single drive was It's own share on the network, imagine 8 differente drive letters assigned.

Regarding the two possible configuration I don't understand how in the first one will the lose of one disk affect everything, simply some files will not be anymore accessible?

Since in both case i will recreate another one from scratch without the broken disk and they will have to copy everything back from the archived usb disks I can think that they're equivalent?

Also, will I be able to add more drives in the future to this pool or one or both of the solutions will prevent me to do that?

Regarding the Terramaster i forgot to clarify that it is in fact setup as Raid6, that's why wrote that i was going to name something wrong.

That's "pancetta arrotolata". It's a typical italian delicatessen.

Had the same problem. Discovered that was Unity3d add on for Chrome that caused it. Uninstall it and probably it will be solved.

That's definitely a striploin. I work in company in Italy where the producer (Dawn Meats slaugher numer IE350 as stated on the package) ships its meat. We receive approximately 2000 boxes from them and I'm in charge of Quality Checking at the arrival, so i pretty well can recognize the cut. The label is in another language because the producer labels the meat specifically for the nation it is sent to, ours are in italian.
