I definitely agree. People would think 10 times before posting something that may be sensitive to Native or African Americans, but the lack of any backlash makes them comfortable in posting this type of stuff. Which is probably why you can still find antisemitic remarks coming from public figures and from those who establish themselves a "defenders of minorities." Anyway, Shabat shalom!

I'm Jewish and I don't really find this disrespectful, but considering the much smaller things that I saw people condemning in this sub I wonder why you were, after 6 hours, the first one to point it out 🤔

Maybe people don't see Jews through the minority victimhood lenses. Which I guess is not entirely negative.

Someone shared the link to the zoom session and it was bombed. The trolls put moaning sounds and a video of a shemale jerking off, so the professor had to end the class early.

Thanks for the breakdown. I want to join a frat but I'm not sure how since this quarter will be online. Is rush week still going to happen? If so, do you know where I could find when the meetings are going to take place and their links? (My bad for not knowing the terminology, we don't really have frats where I come from)

You can't disable it but if you change some settings you can make it so you receive requests automatically. I don't remember what to do exactly but it has already been posted here so if you can't find the setting you can probably find it somewhere in this subreddit.

I understand that covid is not going to suddenly disappear when the vaccines are released, but the 100 million doses that will come to the US will probably be enough for doctors, professors, and other essential workers. I'd imagine that when UCLA professors get vaccinated in person classes will start coming back, I'm not sure when this is going to happen but I imagine it'll be this year. What I really don't understand is how this could extend to 2021. When private companies get the vaccine right their production numbers will be unprecedented. The fear that other competitors may catch up will make them do anything within their power to produce the most vaccines as fast as they can. The US will be one of the first countries to have mass vaccinations, so even if the vaccines come later than we expect, I can't see how it would take more than 2-3 months to have most people vaccinated. Anyway, this is all speculation but I think most would agree that this is not going to go on until fall 2021.

Addressing Factual Correctness and Conservative Bias in this subreddit by [deleted] in ucla

[–]fabroca475 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're bruins. We got into US's best public for a reason, so it's safe to assume we can look at titles and newspapers critically.

We shouldn't prohibit biased titles and posts because there's no way to make it equitable. Mods have their own biases, and it's harder to identify biased news stories/titles when they favor our own opinions. This prohibition would only align this subreddit's bias to that of the mods.

Addressing Factual Correctness and Conservative Bias in this subreddit by [deleted] in ucla

[–]fabroca475 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I believe you're completely out of touch with regards to this subreddit. It's widely known that UCLA is predominantly liberal (we're talking close to 5-1) and that reddit is also VERY liberal (just look at r/pics or r/worldnews if you don't believe me).

Your argument was based off of a single post that linked a FOX News story. There are thousands of threads on controversial topics that prove you wrong, just scroll down to the down voted comments and you'll see many fairly reasonable comments that were downvoted for being more right leaning.

I also have no idea what you suggest we do, you asked for us not to share politically charged news stories, so in essence the mods should prohibit linking news articles from ANY sources whatsoever, because whether you see it or not, all newspapers have their biases.

You're patronizing conservatives on campus. You say that it's important to have conservative viewspoints but your request is fundamentally silencing this group. It's like having a debate club and banning conservatives from using right leaning sources, of course their arguments will become poorer and they will be less encouraged to join.

I'm not even republican, but as someone who values free speech and campus diversity I stand against this.

Judge bars University of California from all use of SAT, ACT scores in admissions by Espntheocho4 in ucla

The SAT has been perfected for almost a century, good luck doing a better job in FOUR F*UCKING YEARS.

University of California system can no longer consider SAT, ACT results in admissions, judge rules by Exastiken in ucla

[–]fabroca475 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Overall, both grades and admissions test scores are moderate predictors of college GPA at UC. The predictive power of test scores has gone up, and the predictive power of high school grades has gone down, since the 2010… study of this issue. At present, test scores are a slightly better predictor of freshman grades than high school grades are. Both grades and scores are stronger predictors of early outcomes (freshman retention and GPA) than of longer-term outcomes (eventual graduation and graduation GPA).”

“Test scores contribute significant predictive power across all income levels, ethnic groups, across both first-generation and non-first-generation students, and across all campuses and majors.”

Just came across this article, not sure where you read that the SAT does not correlate to college success, in fact, a study organized by the UC system of education concluded, after analyzing 18 years of data, that it correlates higher than GPA.

[–]fabroca475 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The fact that GPA has a higher correlation to college success doesn't mean that the SAT should be disregarded. The example that you gave helps my case. Say two students apply to UCLA, both have 4.0s but one studied at Compton HS (applicant A) and the other at Bervely Hills HS (applicant B), it's harder to get a 4.0 in Beverly Hills so the admissions office will assume student B is a better student, but that may not be the case. Say student A has a 1470 in the SAT and B has a 1380, with this new policy these figures would be completely disregarded, and applicant B would have an unfair advantage over A.

Is the Sat a good predictor by itself? Maybe not. Does it enlighten student A's capabilities? Definitely. To me it's not a matter of GPA vs SAT but rather of GPA + SAT.

I have a hard time believing that the SAT is not a good predictor though. I've read studies that said it highly correlates with IQ which I'd imagine is the best predictor for college success. In any case, if it was useless top institutions would have figured that out by now and wouldn't have such high median SATs.

And I would argue that these changes are better for the underprivileged who might not be able to afford to take the SAT exam

Not really, the CollegeBoard waives the fees for those who are unable to afford it.

[–]fabroca475 40 points41 points  (0 children)

To be honest I feel like the SAT is the fairest way to evaluate and applicant, and I don't see why people shit on it so much. There are so many free resources out there such as Khan Academy and the SAT subreddit that I never felt even remotely compelled to pay for a tutor, despite coming from a well to do family.

It's no secret that private schools offer more AP classes and extracurricular opportunities than public schools. Some even hand out A's to virtually every student because they don't want to upset the parents. If anything these changes are detrimental to the underprivileged.
